Alif, Lam, Meem.
What are the mysterious disconnected letters (muqatta'at)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:1–2 ALIF. LAM. MIM. This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt, a guidance unto those who ward off evil. The letters stand immediately before a statement about the Scripture, which is the commonest pattern for them, and neither verse explains the other.
- 02 68:1 NUN. BY THE PEN AND THAT WHICH THEY WRITE THEREWITH. This is the one place among the passages this page carries where a letter is followed at once by an oath about the pen and what is written with it. The study of the pen carries this verse too, for a different reason.
- 03 26:1–3 TA. SIN. MIM. These are revelations of the Scripture that maketh plain. It may be that thou tormentest thyself because they believe not. Letters that are not plain are followed at once by a description of the Scripture as one that makes plain. That is the puzzle in its sharpest form.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Twenty-nine surahs open with separate Arabic letters such as Alif Lām Mīm, Ḥā Mīm or Yā Sīn. They are recited as letter names rather than as ordinary words and are commonly called the disconnected letters. Several openings move immediately from the letters to a statement about the Book or revelation, but the Qur’an never explicitly explains what the letters mean.
Later interpretations are numerous. They have been understood as abbreviations, divine names, oaths, structural markers, a challenge formed from the same alphabet available to the audience, or knowledge whose full meaning belongs to God. These proposals are not equivalent, and the letters themselves do not identify one as correct.
The clear conclusion is that the letters are part of the received Qur’anic text and their pronunciation is preserved, while their intended semantic function remains uncertain. AALAMIN should show where they occur and how the surah continues, then label every proposed explanation by its source and date rather than offer an anonymous solution.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:1–2, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

If We will, We can send down upon them a sign from heaven, at which their necks will stay bent in humility.
If We will, We can send down on them from the sky a portent so that their necks would remain bowed before it
If we please we will send down upon them from the heaven a sign, and their necks shall be humbled thereto
Were it our will we could send down to them a sign from Heaven, before which they would humbly bow
If We pleased, We could send down unto them a convincing sign from heaven, unto which their necks would humbly submit

The translators word this verse differently
No fresh reminder comes to them from the Most Merciful, but they turn their backs at it.
Never cometh there unto them a fresh reminder from the Beneficent One, but they turn away from it
But there comes not to them any recent Reminder from the Merciful One that they do not turn away from
But from each fresh warning that cometh to them from the God of Mercy they have only turned aside
But where cometh unto them no admonition from the Merciful, being newly revealed as occasions require, but they turn aside from the same
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it7 of the 8 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:1-2, 68:1, 26:1-3, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - alif + lam + mim; ha + mim; ya + sin; ta + sin; kaf + ha + ya; nun + by + the + pen. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 3:1 - near-identical to 2:1; recorded so the repetition is visible.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed earlier, and this study's inclusion reasons were rewritten as plain English. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. One passage was removed, 3:7: it was here only because a reason read the letters as the allegorical verses 3:7 warns against explaining, which the verse does not say. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged, except that passages were removed as stated.
