And when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead." He said, "Have you not believed?" He said, "Yes, but to put my heart at ease." He said, "Take four birds, and incline them to yourself, then place a part on each hill, then call to them; and they will come rushing to you. And know that God is Powerful and Wise."
What does the Qur'an say about doubt and honest questioning?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:260 And when Abraham said: My Lord, SHOW ME HOW THOU GIVEST LIFE TO THE DEAD. He said: DOST THOU NOT BELIEVE? He said: yea, BUT THAT MY HEART MAY BE AT REST. He said: take four of the birds... In because it is the central case: a prophet asks for a demonstration, is asked whether he doubts, says no - and is given the demonstration anyway.
- 02 10:94 And if thou art in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto thee, THEN QUESTION THOSE WHO READ THE SCRIPTURE BEFORE THEE. In because the remedy prescribed for doubt is inquiry of other people, and because it is addressed to the Prophet.
- 03 2:2 This is the Scripture WHEREOF THERE IS NO DOUBT, a guidance unto those who ward off evil. In because it is the book's own claim about itself, and it is the claim every other verse in this study sits against.
- 04 11:17 Is he to be counted equal who relieth on a clear proof from his Lord... Whoso disbelieveth in it, the Fire is his appointed place. SO BE NOT THOU IN DOUBT CONCERNING IT. Lo, it is the Truth from thy Lord. In because it is an instruction not to doubt, addressed to the Prophet, which shows the text expects the possibility.
- 05 17:99 Have they not seen that God Who created the heavens and the earth is Able to create the like of them, and hath appointed for them an end whereof there is no doubt? In because it answers doubt with an argument from what is already visible rather than with a rebuke.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an declares itself free of doubt in its second verse, and then records a prophet asking for proof. Both belong in the answer.
2:260 is the passage that makes this study worth having. Abraham asks: SHOW ME HOW THOU GIVEST LIFE TO THE DEAD. The reply is a question - DOST THOU NOT BELIEVE? - and Abraham's answer is the interesting part: YEA, BUT THAT MY HEART MAY BE AT REST. He does not claim doubt. He asks for the demonstration anyway, on the grounds of wanting settlement rather than information. And he is given it, in detail, with four birds.
Nothing in the passage rebukes him. The question DOST THOU NOT BELIEVE is put and answered and the request is granted.
10:94 is the other remarkable verse: if thou art in doubt about what We reveal to thee, THEN QUESTION THOSE WHO READ THE SCRIPTURE BEFORE THEE. The remedy prescribed is not prayer or patience but asking other people who have earlier books.
11:17 tells the Prophet not to be in doubt - which, like 10:94, shows the text taking the possibility seriously enough to address it.
17:99 answers doubt about resurrection by pointing at the heavens and the earth already made.
Set against these is 2:2, the book's flat claim about itself: a scripture WHEREOF THERE IS NO DOUBT. Eight further verses repeat a version of the formula about the Hour and are recorded as drops.
So the honest report: the Qur'an asserts its own certainty, and it also records a prophet asking for a demonstration and being given one, and instructs its own messenger on what to do if doubt arises. It does not treat the request for reassurance as unbelief.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:260, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Or like him who passed by a town collapsed on its foundations. He said, "How can God revive this after its demise?" Thereupon God caused him to die for a hundred years, and then resurrected him. He said, "For how long have you tarried?" He said, "I have tarried for a day, or part of a day." He said, "No. You have tarried for a hundred years. Now look at your food and your drink-it has not spoiled-and look at your donkey. We will make you a wonder for mankind. And look at the bones, how We arrange them, and then clothe them with flesh." So when it became clear to him, he said, "I know that God has power over all things."
Or (bethink thee of) the like of him who, passing by a township which had fallen into utter ruin, exclaimed: How shall Allah give this township life after its death? And Allah made him die a hundred years, then brought him back to life. He said: How long hast thou tarried? (The man) said: I have tarried a day or part of a day. (He) said: Nay, but thou hast tarried for a hundred years. Just look at thy food and drink which have not rotted! Look at thine ass! And, that We may make thee a token unto mankind, look at the bones, how We adjust them and then cover them with flesh! And when (the matter) became clear unto him, he said: I know now that Allah is Able to do all things
Or like him who passed by a village, when it was desolate and turned over on its roofs, and said, 'How will God revive this after its death?' He said, 'Nay, thou hast tarried a hundred years; look at thy food and drink, they are not spoiled, and look at thine ass; for we will make thee a sign to men. And look at the bones how we scatter them and then clothe them with flesh.' And when it was made manifest to him, he said, 'I know that God is mighty over all
Or how he demeaned him who passed by a city which had been laid in ruins. "How," said he, "shall God give life to this city, after she hath been dead?" And God caused him to die for an hundred years, and then raised him to life. And God said, "How long hast thou waited?" He said, "I have waited a day or part of a day." He said, "Nay, thou hast waited an hundred years. Look on thy food and thy drink; they are not corrupted; and look on thine ass: we would make thee a sign unto men: And look on the bones of thine ass, how we will raise them, then clothe them with flesh." And when this was shewn to him, he said, "I acknowledge that God hath power to do all things
Or hast thou not considered how he behaved who passed by a city which had been destroyed, even to her foundations? He said, how shall God quicken this city, after she hath been dead? And God caused him to die for an hundred years, and afterwards raised him to life. And God said, how long hast thou tarried here? He answered, a day, or part of a day. God said, nay, thou hast tarried here an hundred years. Now look on thy food and thy drink, they are not yet corrupted; and look on thine ass: And this have we done that we might make thee a sign unto men. And look on the bones of thine ass, how we raise them, and afterwards cloath them with flesh. And when this was shewn unto him, he said, I know that God is able to do all things

Is he who possesses a clear proof from his Lord, recited by a witness from Him, and before it the Book of Moses, a guide and a mercy? These believe in it. But whoever defies it from among the various factions, the Fire is his promise. So have no doubt about it. It is the truth from your Lord, but most people do not believe.

Is he (to be counted equal with them) who relieth on a clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from Him reciteth it, and before it was the Book of Moses, an example and a mercy? Such believe therein, and whoso disbelieveth therein of the clans, the Fire is his appointed place. So be not thou in doubt concerning it. Lo! it is the Truth from thy Lord; but most of mankind believe not
Is he (like them) who stands upon a manifest sign from his Lord, which is a witness from Him, and recites it, with the book of Moses before him for a model and a mercy? These believe in it; and whosoever of the crews disbelieves in him, the Fire is his promise. Be not thou in doubt about it; verily, it is truth from thy Lord, though most men do not believe
With such can they be compared who rest upon clear proofs from their Lord? to whom a witness from him reciteth the Koran, and who is preceded by the Book of Moses, a guide and mercy? These have faith in it: but the partisans of idolatry, who believe not in it, are menaced with the fire! Have thou no doubts about that Book, for it is the very truth from thy Lord. But most men will not believe
Shall he therefore be compared with them, who followeth the evident declaration of his Lord, and whom a witness from him attendeth, preceded by the book of Moses, which was revealed for a guide, and out of mercy to mankind? These believe in the Koran: But whosoever of the confederate infidels believeth not therein, is threatened with the fire of hell, which threat shall certainly be executed: Be not therefore in a doubt concerning it; for it is the truth from thy Lord: But the greater part of men will not believe

Jene glauben daran.

Quelli credono in Esso.

These-they will have nothing but the Fire in the Hereafter. Their deeds are in vain therein, and their works are null.
Those are they for whom is naught in the Hereafter save the Fire. (All) that they contrive here is vain and (all) that they are wont to do is fruitless
These are those for whom there is nothing in the hereafter save the Fire; and void is what they made therein, and vain what they were doing

Whomever God guides is the guided one. And whomever He leaves astray-for them you will find no protectors apart from Him. And We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection, on their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf. Their abode is Hell; whenever it abates, We intensify the blaze for them.
And he whom Allah guideth, he is led aright; while, as for him whom He sendeth astray, for them thou wilt find no protecting friends beside Him, and We shall assemble them on the Day of Resurrection on their faces, blind, dumb and deaf; their habitation will be hell; whenever it abateth, We increase the flame for them
He whom God guides, he is guided indeed; and he whom God leads astray, thou shalt never find patrons for them beside Him; and we will gather them upon the resurrection day upon their faces, blind, and dumb, and deaf; their resort is hell; whenever it grows dull we will give them another blaze
And He whom God shall guide will be guided indeed; and whom he shall mislead thou shalt find none to assist, but Him: and we will gather them together on the day of the resurrection, on their faces, blind and dumb and deaf: Hell shall be their abode: so oft as its fires die down, we will rekindle the flame
Whom God shall direct, he shall be the rightly directed; and whom He shall cause to err, thou shalt find none to assist, besides him. And We will gather them together on the day of resurrection, creeping on their faces, blind, and dumb, and deaf: Their abode shall be hell; so often as the fire thereof shall be extinguished, We will rekindle a burning flame to torment them

This is their repayment for having blasphemed against Our revelations, and having said, "Shall we, when we have become bones and fragments, be resurrected as a new creation?"
That is their reward because they disbelieved Our revelations and said: When we are bones and fragments shall we, forsooth, be raised up as a new creation
That is their reward for that they disbelieved in our signs, and said, 'What! when we are bones and rubbish, shall we then be raised up a new creation
This shall be their reward for that they believed not our signs and said, "When we shall have become bones and dust, shall we surely be raised a new creation
This shall be their reward, because they disbelieve in our signs, and say, when we shall have been reduced to bones and dust, shall we surely be raised new creatures

Say, "If you possessed the treasuries of my Lord's mercy, you would have withheld them for fear of spending." The human being has always been stingy.
Say (unto them): If ye possessed the treasures of the mercy of my Lord, ye would surely hold them back for fear of spending, for man was ever grudging
Say, 'Did ye control the treasuries of the mercy of my Lord, then ye would hold them through fear of expending; for man is ever niggardly

We gave Moses nine clear signs-ask the Children of Israel. When he went to them, Pharaoh said to him, "I think that you, Moses, are bewitched."
And verily We gave unto Moses nine tokens, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). Do but ask the Children of Israel how he came unto them, then Pharaoh said unto him: Lo! I deem thee one bewitched, O Moses
And we did bring Moses nine manifest signs; then ask the children of Israel (about) when he came to them, and Pharaoh said to him, 'Verily, I think thee, O Moses! enchanted
We therefore gave to Moses nine clear signs. Ask thou, therefore, the children of Israel how it was when he came unto them, and Pharaoh said to him, "Verily, I deem thee, O Moses, a man enchanted
We heretofore gave unto Moses the power of working nine evident signs. And do thou ask the children of Israel as to the story of Moses; when he came unto them, and Pharaoh said unto him, verily I esteem thee, O Moses, to be deluded by sorcery

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:260, 10:94, 2:2, 11:17, 17:99, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - if + thou + art + in + doubt; that + my + heart + may + be + at + rest; show + me + how + thou + givest + life; no + doubt + therein. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 8 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:87 - near-identical to 22:7, 40:59 and 45:26 - the no-doubt-about-the-Hour formula; 10:37 - the subject is authorship; 22:7 - the formula; 32:2 - near-identical to 2:2; 40:59 - the formula; 42:7 - revelation; 45:26 - the formula; 45:32 - the formula, with the objection attached.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
