What does the text say about the night journey - and where does the familiar Mi'raj narrative live?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 17:1 The whole of what the text says about the journey, in the five renderings - the only verse the seed returns
  2. 02 53:1–18 The other vision passage, included so a reader can see it and judge; the five do not say it is the same event, and neither does this study
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an describes the night journey in one verse. 17:1 says a servant was taken by night from one named place of prayer to another, and closes by naming God as the one who hears and sees - which is the plain-words reading signed for that verse: "A night journey is described: a servant is taken from one named place of prayer to another, and the passage closes by naming God as the one who hears and sees."

Travelling by night belongs to other passages too - at 20:77, 26:52 and 44:23 Moses is told to depart with God's servants by night - so the phrase is not the journey. The journey is that one verse.

The story most readers know is not in it. No verse in these five renderings names a mount; a search for the prophets' names alongside the heavens returns no meeting on any way; and the only occurrences of "fifty" are Noah's years at 29:14 and a measure at 70:4, never a count of prayers. A second passage, 53:1-18, describes a vision - one mighty in power, and a sight at the lote-tree of the utmost boundary - and the five do not say whether it is the same event.

The ascent through the heavens, the prophets met on the way, the prayers reduced from fifty: those come from the and sira literature, which this platform holds nothing from. Identifying 53 with 17:1 is a step beyond the text, taken by scholars, and this study does not take it.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

WHAT THIS STUDY DOES NOT ANSWER, and the layer that would. (1) THE MI'RAJ NARRATIVE ITSELF - the ascent, the meetings, the fifty prayers - is a and sira matter. Nothing from either has cleared: sunnah.com's terms have never been readable to this host and a request is open; the Guillaume translation of Ibn Ishaq is in copyright and held; the Arabic of Ibn Hisham is public domain by age with no chain-clean machine-readable edition established. (2) Whether 53:1-18 describes the same event: the five renderings do not say, and identifying them would be . (3) Where the two places of prayer stood, or whether the journey was bodily: contested in every source that discusses it, and none of those sources has cleared. (4) When it happened: an occasions question, and that layer is empty.

What this rests on

Opens with 17:1, widening across 2 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation

2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

53:17 shikimi i tij nuk u shmang, as e kaloi kufirin,

53:5 Подучава га један великих моћи;

53:5 Undervisad av en med väldig styrka;

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

SEED. 'journey night servant', all three words as whole words in one rendering, returned exactly one verse across all five renderings: 17:1 (Palmer alone). 'sacred mosque farthest' returned none in the four older renderings, because they render the two places differently - which is itself why the seed found nothing over them and is recorded here rather than smoothed away; Itani alone matches it: 17:1 (Itani alone).

THE SIGNED WORDING IS QUOTED VERBATIM. 17:1's restatement was signed on 2026-08-24 and is reproduced here word for word under the one-claim-one-wording rule established at surah 96: where a study and a verse page state the same thing they state it identically.

THE ABSENCE CLAIMS, WITH THEIR PROBE VOCABULARY RECORDED - a published zero carries its method or it is an assertion. Each was run as a whole word, case-insensitively, over all 31,173 rendering rows of the five cleared renderings on 2026-09-24. * THE MOUNT: probe 'buraq|buraaq' - 0 rows corpus-wide. * THE MEETINGS: probe (moses|abraham|jesus|adam) AND (heaven|heavens) AND (met|meeting|greeted|saw him) - 0 rows corpus-wide. * THE FIFTY: probe 'fifty' - 2 verses corpus-wide (10 rows), at 29:14 (Noah's years) and 70:4 (a measure); neither is a count of prayers. * THE ASCENT: probe 'ascend|ascent' - 31 rows CORPUS-WIDE, which is not zero, and the claim is therefore scoped rather than universal: 0 of those rows fall in 17:1 or anywhere in 53:1-18. The word belongs to other passages, not to these. * THE CONTRAST: probe 'by night' AND 'servant|servants' (the plural is listed because whole-word matching does not treat servants as servant) - 4 verses, 17:1 with 20:77, 26:52 and 44:23. Those three stay in the prose as derived contrast and are deliberately NOT passages of this study: they are instrument evidence that the phrase lives elsewhere, which is what makes the 17:1 singleton a finding.

Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted in choosing this study's verses. Where a sentence here counts or compares the renderings, it has been checked against all five.

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".
