How does the Qur'an describe its own revelation - and what does it leave to the commentary literature?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:185 THE MONTH OF RAMADAN IN WHICH WAS REVEALED THE QUR'AN, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion. Carried for the timing clause. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about fasting? and What does the Qur'an say about the Night of Decree - and what does the sura not say?, and by Does the Qur'an attach a number to the reward for fasting?, each with its own reason.
  2. 02 97:1–5 In as ONE PASSAGE because the surah is one statement: LO! WE REVEALED IT ON THE NIGHT OF PREDESTINATION - what will convey to thee what it is? - BETTER THAN A THOUSAND MONTHS - THE ANGELS AND THE SPIRIT DESCEND THEREIN by permission of their Lord, with all decrees - PEACE, UNTIL THE RISING OF THE DAWN. Carried whole for the second timing statement and for the descent it describes. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Night of Decree - and what does the sura not say? with a different reason.
  3. 03 17:106 And it is a Qur'an that WE HAVE DIVIDED, that thou mayst recite it unto mankind AT INTERVALS, and We have revealed it by successive revelation. This is here because it states the piecemeal delivery as deliberate and gives its purpose. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about reciting it - slowly, aloud, by heart?
  4. 04 26:192–195 In as ONE PASSAGE because the four lines are one sentence describing the route: it is a revelation of the Lord of the Worlds - WHICH THE TRUE SPIRIT HATH BROUGHT DOWN - UPON THY HEART, that thou mayst be one of the warners - IN PLAIN ARABIC SPEECH. Carried whole because it names the carrier, the destination and the language in four consecutive lines.
  5. 05 42:51 IT WAS NOT VOUCHSAFED TO ANY MORTAL THAT ALLAH SHOULD SPEAK TO HIM UNLESS BY REVELATION, OR FROM BEHIND A VEIL, OR THAT HE SENDETH A MESSENGER TO REVEAL WHAT HE WILL. This is here because it is the only verse that enumerates the MODES, and it gives three.
  6. 06 53:1–11 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is one sustained passage and breaking it would destroy its ambiguity: by the Star when it setteth - YOUR COMRADE ERRETH NOT, NOR IS DECEIVED, NOR DOTH HE SPEAK OF HIS OWN DESIRE - IT IS NAUGHT SAVE AN INSPIRATION THAT IS INSPIRED - WHICH ONE OF MIGHTY POWERS HATH TAUGHT HIM - he grew clear to view when he was on the uppermost horizon, then he drew nigh and came down TILL HE WAS TWO BOWS' LENGTH OR EVEN NEARER - AND HE REVEALED UNTO HIS SLAVE THAT WHICH HE REVEALED - THE HEART LIED NOT IN SEEING WHAT IT SAW.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The text gives its own account in some detail, and the account does not entirely resolve into one picture. This study sets out what it says and marks where it stops.

ON WHEN. Two statements, and they agree with each other. 2:185: the month of Ramadan, in which the Qur'an was sent down. 97:1: We revealed it on the Night of Power - and that night is better than a thousand months, and the angels and the Spirit descend in it, and it is peace until dawn.

ON HOW IT ARRIVED OVER TIME. 17:106 says the text was DIVIDED, so that it could be recited to people at intervals, and revealed by successive revelation. So a single night of sending down and a long piecemeal delivery are both asserted, and the text does not explain how the two fit together. Reconciling them is the work of the commentary literature, which this platform cannot show you.

ON THE ROUTE. 26:192-195 is the most specific passage in the book about the mechanics: it is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds, brought down by THE TRUSTWORTHY SPIRIT, UPON YOUR HEART, in PLAIN ARABIC SPEECH. Carrier, destination, and language, in four consecutive lines. The destination is worth noticing - the heart, not the ear.

ON THE MODES. 42:51 is the only verse that enumerates, and it gives three ways God speaks to a human being: by revelation; or FROM BEHIND A VEIL; or by sending a messenger to reveal by His permission. Three, distinguished, and not ranked.

ON THE VISION. 53:1-11 is the passage that has been argued over most, and this study carries it whole precisely because it is ambiguous. Your comrade does not err, nor speak of his own desire; it is only an inspiration inspired, TAUGHT BY ONE MIGHTY IN POWER, who drew near and came down until he was TWO BOWS' LENGTH OR NEARER - and revealed to His servant what He revealed - and THE HEART DID NOT LIE ABOUT WHAT IT SAW.

Who drew near, and what was seen, is not stated. The pronouns do not settle it. That is a real feature of the passage rather than a defect of our four translations, and there is a long dispute about it which this platform cannot show you, because no has cleared the rights audit.

So: a night named, a gradual delivery asserted, a carrier and a destination given, three modes distinguished, and a vision described in terms that decline to identify what was seen. That is the text's own account, and its last and most vivid element is the one it leaves open.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:185, widening across 6 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed. Guidance for humanity, and clear portents of guidance, and the Criterion. Whoever of you witnesses the month, shall fast it. But whoever is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days. God desires ease for you, and does not desire hardship for you, that you may complete the number, and celebrate God for having guided you, so that you may be thankful.

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

The month of Ramadhan, wherein was revealed the Koran, for a guidance to men, and for manifestations of guidance, and for a Discrimination. And he amongst you who beholds this month then let him fast it; but he who is sick or on a journey, then another number of days;- God desires for you what is easy, and desires not for you what is difficult,- that ye may complete the number, and say, 'Great is God,' for that He has guided you; haply ye may give thanks

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

As to the month Ramadhan in which the Koran was sent down to be man's guidance, and an explanation of that guidance, and of that illumination, as soon as any one of you observeth the moon, let him set about the fast; but he who is sick, or upon a journey, shall fast a like number of other days. God wisheth you ease, but wisheth not your discomfort, and that you fulfil the number of days, and that you glorify God for his guidance, and that you be thankful

George Sale published 1734

The month of Ramadan shall ye fast, in which the Koran was sent down from heaven, a direction unto men, and declarations of direction, and the distinction between good and evil. Therefore let him among you who shall be present in this month, fast the same month; but he who shall be sick, or on a journey, shall fast the like number of other days. God would make this an ease unto you, and would not make it a difficulty unto you; that ye may fulfill the number of days, and glorify God, for that he hath directed you, and that ye may give thanks

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

Talal Itani2012 For a specified number of days. But whoever among you is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days. For those who are able: a ransom of feeding a needy person. But whoever volunteers goodness, it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 (Fast) a certain number of days; and (for) him who is sick among you, or on a journey, (the same) number of other days; and for those who can afford it there is a ransom: the feeding of a man in need - but whoso doeth good of his own accord, it is better for him: and that ye fast is better for you if ye did but know

Edward Henry Palmer1880 A certain number of days, but he amongst you who is ill or on a journey, then (let him fast) another number of days. And those who are fit to fast may redeem it by feeding a poor man; but he who follows an impulse to a good work it is better for him; and if ye fast it is better for you, if ye did but know

John Medows Rodwell1861 For certain days. But he among you who shall be sick, or on a journey, shall fast that same number of other days: and as for those who are able to keep it and yet break it, the expiation of this shall be the maintenance of a poor man. And he who of his own accord performeth a good work, shall derive good from it: and good shall it be for you to fast if ye knew it

George Sale1734 A certain number of days shall ye fast: But he among you who shall be sick, or on a journey, shall fast an equal number of other days. And those who can keep it, and do not, must redeem their neglect by maintaining of a poor man. And he who voluntarily dealeth better with the poor man than he is obliged, this shall be better for him. But if ye fast it will be better for you, if ye knew it

Talal Itani2012 Permitted for you is intercourse with your wives on the night of the fast. They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. God knows that you used to betray yourselves, but He turned to you and pardoned you. So approach them now, and seek what God has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white streak of dawn can be distinguished from the black streak. Then complete the fast until nightfall. But do not approach them while you are in retreat at the mosques. These are the limits of God, so do not come near them. God thus clarifies His revelations to the people, that they may attain piety.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. They are raiment for you and ye are raiment for them. Allah is Aware that ye were deceiving yourselves in this respect and He hath turned in mercy toward you and relieved you. So hold intercourse with them and seek that which Allah hath ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn. Then strictly observe the fast till nightfall and touch them not, but be at your devotions in the mosques. These are the limits imposed by Allah, so approach them not. Thus Allah expoundeth His revelation to mankind that they may ward off (evil)

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Lawful for you on the night of the fast is commerce with your wives; they are a garment unto you, and ye a garment unto them. God knows that ye did defraud yourselves, wherefore He has turned towards you and forgiven you; so now go in unto them and crave what God has prescribed for you, and eat and drink until a white thread can be distinguished by you from a black one at the dawn. Then fulfil the fast until the night, and go not in unto them, and ye at your devotions in the mosques the while. These are the bounds that God has set, so draw not near thereto. Thus does God make manifest His signs to men, that haply they may fear

John Medows Rodwell1861 You are allowed on the night of the fast to approach your wives: they are your garment and ye are their garment. God knoweth that ye defraud yourselves therein, so He turneth unto you and forgiveth you! Now, therefore, go in unto them with full desire for that which God hath ordained for you; and eat and drink until ye can discern a white thread from a black thread by the daybreak: then fast strictly till night, and go not in unto them, but rather pass the time in the Mosques. These are the bounds set up by God: therefore come not near them. Thus God maketh his signs clear to men that they may fear Him

George Sale1734 It is lawful for you on the night of the fast to go in unto your wives; they are a garment unto you, and ye are a garment unto them. God knoweth that ye defraud your selves therein, wherefore he turneth unto you, and forgiveth you. Now therefore go in unto them; and earnestly desire that which God ordaineth you, and eat and drink until ye can plainly distinguish a white thread from a black thread by the day-break: Then keep the fast until night, and go not in unto them, but be constantly present in the places of worship. These are the prescribed bounds of God, therefore draw not near them to transgress them. Thus God declareth his signs unto men, that they may fear him

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:185, 97:1-5, 17:106, 26:192-195, 42:51, 53:1-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
