What does the Qur'an say about the Night of Decree - and what does the sura not say?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 97:1–5 The passage the question names, now carried whole. Five verses: that it was sent down on this night; that the night exceeds telling; that it is better than a thousand months; that the angels and the Spirit descend in it by their Lord's permission with every decree; and that it is peace until dawn. In because a study of this night that carried only part of its own sura would misrepresent it.
  2. 02 44:3 OPTIONAL CONTEXT, UNCONFIRMED. Says it was sent down on a blessed night, without naming which. In as the only other verse in the corpus that dates the sending down to a night; the Editor decides whether it belongs.
  3. 03 2:185 OPTIONAL CONTEXT, UNCONFIRMED. Names the month of Ramadan as the month in which the Qur'an was sent down. In as the only verse that dates the sending down to a month. THIS VERSE IS ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about fasting?, with a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Read whole, the sura says five things and does not explain the first of them.

It opens by saying it was sent down on this night (97:1) - and the five translators do not agree on the night's name: Sale keeps the Arabic, al Kadr; Rodwell and Palmer render Power; Pickthall renders it Predestination; Itani renders it Decree. Five renderings, four names, and the one this study is filed under is Itani's. Then 97:2 asks what will make you know what it is, and does not answer.

What follows is a comparison and a description. It is better than a thousand months (97:3) - at 0.29 the closest the five renderings stand anywhere near here, and the measure gives the same figure over five as it gave over four. The angels and the Spirit descend in it by their Lord's permission with every decree (97:4). And it closes: peace, until the rising of the dawn (97:5).

Two further verses are offered as context and are not confirmed. 44:3 says it was sent down on a blessed night without naming which; Itani has Blessed Night with the others. 2:185 names the month - Ramadan - as the month in which the Qur'an was sent down.

What the sura does not say is which night of the year it is. That identification is not in these verses; it comes from the layers this platform cannot yet show.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 97:1–5, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful

The month of Ramadhan, wherein was revealed the Koran, for a guidance to men, and for manifestations of guidance, and for a Discrimination. And he amongst you who beholds this month then let him fast it; but he who is sick or on a journey, then another number of days;- God desires for you what is easy, and desires not for you what is difficult,- that ye may complete the number, and say, 'Great is God,' for that He has guided you; haply ye may give thanks

As to the month Ramadhan in which the Koran was sent down to be man's guidance, and an explanation of that guidance, and of that illumination, as soon as any one of you observeth the moon, let him set about the fast; but he who is sick, or upon a journey, shall fast a like number of other days. God wisheth you ease, but wisheth not your discomfort, and that you fulfil the number of days, and that you glorify God for his guidance, and that you be thankful

George Sale published 1734

The month of Ramadan shall ye fast, in which the Koran was sent down from heaven, a direction unto men, and declarations of direction, and the distinction between good and evil. Therefore let him among you who shall be present in this month, fast the same month; but he who shall be sick, or on a journey, shall fast the like number of other days. God would make this an ease unto you, and would not make it a difficulty unto you; that ye may fulfill the number of days, and glorify God, for that he hath directed you, and that ye may give thanks

Ramazan ayı, insanlara yol gösterici, doğrunun ve doğruyu eğriden ayırmanın açık delilleri olarak Kur'an'ın indirildiği aydır. Öyle ise sizden ramazan ayını idrak edenler onda oruç tutsun. Kim o anda hasta veya yolcu olursa (tutamadığı günler sayısınca) başka günlerde kaza etsin. Allah sizin için kolaylık ister, zorluk istemez. Bütün bunlar, sayıyı tamamlamanız ve size doğru yolu göstermesine karşılık, Allah'ı tekbir/tazim etmeniz, şükretmeniz içindir

Talal Itani2012 For a specified number of days. But whoever among you is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days. For those who are able: a ransom of feeding a needy person. But whoever volunteers goodness, it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

John Medows Rodwell1861 For certain days. But he among you who shall be sick, or on a journey, shall fast that same number of other days: and as for those who are able to keep it and yet break it, the expiation of this shall be the maintenance of a poor man. And he who of his own accord performeth a good work, shall derive good from it: and good shall it be for you to fast if ye knew it

George Sale1734 A certain number of days shall ye fast: But he among you who shall be sick, or on a journey, shall fast an equal number of other days. And those who can keep it, and do not, must redeem their neglect by maintaining of a poor man. Talal Itani2012 Permitted for you is intercourse with your wives on the night of the fast. They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. God knows that you used to betray yourselves, but He turned to you and pardoned you. So approach them now, and seek what God has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white streak of dawn can be distinguished from the black streak. Then complete the fast until nightfall. But do not approach them while you are in retreat at the mosques. These are the limits of God, so do not come near them. God thus clarifies His revelations to the people, that they may attain piety.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. They are raiment for you and ye are raiment for them. Allah is Aware that ye were deceiving yourselves in this respect and He hath turned in mercy toward you and relieved you. So hold intercourse with them and seek that which Allah hath ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn. Then strictly observe the fast till nightfall and touch them not, but be at your devotions in the mosques. These are the limits imposed by Allah, so approach them not. Thus Allah expoundeth His revelation to mankind that they may ward off (evil)

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Lawful for you on the night of the fast is commerce with your wives; they are a garment unto you, and ye a garment unto them. God knows that ye did defraud yourselves, wherefore He has turned towards you and forgiven you; so now go in unto them and crave what God has prescribed for you, and eat and drink until a white thread can be distinguished by you from a black one at the dawn. Then fulfil the fast until the night, and go not in unto them, and ye at your devotions in the mosques the while. These are the bounds that God has set, so draw not near thereto. Thus does God make manifest His signs to men, that haply they may fear

John Medows Rodwell1861 You are allowed on the night of the fast to approach your wives: they are your garment and ye are their garment. God knoweth that ye defraud yourselves therein, so He turneth unto you and forgiveth you! Now, therefore, go in unto them with full desire for that which God hath ordained for you; and eat and drink until ye can discern a white thread from a black thread by the daybreak: then fast strictly till night, and go not in unto them, but rather pass the time in the Mosques. These are the bounds set up by God: therefore come not near them. Thus God maketh his signs clear to men that they may fear Him

George Sale1734 It is lawful for you on the night of the fast to go in unto your wives; they are a garment unto you, and ye are a garment unto them. God knoweth that ye defraud your selves therein, wherefore he turneth unto you, and forgiveth you. Now therefore go in unto them; and earnestly desire that which God ordaineth you, and eat and drink until ye can plainly distinguish a white thread from a black thread by the day-break: Then keep the fast until night, and go not in unto them, but be constantly present in the places of worship. These are the prescribed bounds of God, therefore draw not near them to transgress them. Thus God declareth his signs unto men, that they may fear him

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 97:1-5, 44:3, 2:185, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.

RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-09-05 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles the name. What changed: 97:1's name is now a four-name split across five renderings, Itani supplying Decree; the divergence figures below are restated on the five-based measure. What did not change: the verse set, the reasons per verse, and the sura's refusal to say which night of the year it is.

A NOTE THE EDITOR OWES THE READER. The name Itani gives - Decree - is the name this study is filed under, and has been since it was signed over four renderings that did not use it. That is a coincidence of slug and rendering, not a reason to prefer Itani, and the synthesis says so by naming all four names and choosing none. Had the slug been written after this re-check over five translations it would have carried the same warning.

How this set was arrived at. The passage is the sura in full, completed on the Editor's instruction after a word search had returned only part of it. Verses proposed for removal and confirmed out: 10:24 - Matched on night + better. Its subject is a parable of the life of this world as water sent down; the words are incidental.; 73:20 - Matched on night. It is about keeping vigil for parts of the night; it is not about this night. An earlier draft carried two of the sura's five verses because that is what a word search returned; it now carries the sura whole. 44:3 and 2:185 are offered as optional context and are unconfirmed; 2:185 is also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about fasting? The re-check over five translations added and removed no verse. Why each passage is in the study is stated per passage, and is signed with this prose.

PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. The version signed when four translations were cleared named no search terms; this re-check over five translations records its own. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["decree"] - 54 verses; ["power"] - 205; ["predestination"] - 1; ["kadr"] - 3. THE UNION IS NOT A CANDIDATE SET FOR THIS STUDY and no verse was taken from it: the passage is the sura in full by the Editor's instruction, not a search result. The probes are recorded because they establish the name split: "predestination" returns exactly one verse in the whole corpus, 97:1, and reaches it in Pickthall alone; "kadr" returns three and reaches 97:1 in Sale alone; neither reaches Itani, whose Decree is a fourth name for the night. "decree" and "power" are broad words that return 54 and 205 verses respectively, which is why the sura was completed by the Editor rather than assembled from a search.

Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. Across this set the derived divergence measure, recomputed over five renderings on 2026-09-07, runs from band 1 at 97:3 (0.29), where the five stand closest, to band 4 at 2:185 (0.63), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared gave the same band and the same 0.29 at 97:3 and 0.65 at 2:185; the endpoints are unchanged and one of the two figures is. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
