Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel: that whoever kills a person-unless it is for murder or corruption on earth-it is as if he killed the whole of mankind; and whoever saves it, it is as if he saved the whole of mankind. Our messengers came to them with clarifications, but even after that, many of them continue to commit excesses in the land.
What does the Qur'an mean that killing one soul is like killing all?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 5:32 For that cause We decreed for the CHILDREN OF ISRAEL that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed ALL MANKIND, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Carried FIRST and whole because the addressee clause is in the verse's own opening words and is the thing most often cut when the verse is quoted. The verse is not made smaller by naming its addressee; the moral it draws is universal in its own words.
- 02 5:33 The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. This is here because it is the VERY NEXT VERSE and because both sides of this argument quote one of these two and not the other. The study shows the pair and does not resolve the tension between them.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Two verses that sit next to each other, and almost nobody quotes both.
5:32 is the famous one. Whoever kills a soul - other than for manslaughter or for corruption in the earth - it is as if he killed all mankind; and whoever saves one, as if he saved all mankind. It is one of the most quoted sentences in the book, and it deserves to be.
It also opens with a clause that is cut out of most quotations of it: FOR THAT CAUSE WE DECREED FOR THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL. All four renderings carry it. The verse states that it is recording a decree given to an earlier community. A reader should be told that plainly, because being told it later, by someone presenting it as a catch, is what makes it feel like a concealment.
Two things follow, and the honest study carries both. The addressee is named in the text. And the moral the verse draws is drawn in universal terms - a human being, all mankind - not in terms restricted to that community. Those are both facts about the sentence. Neither cancels the other.
Then comes 5:33, immediately after: the reward of those who make war upon God and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land is killing, crucifixion, the cutting off of hands and feet on alternate sides, or expulsion. The exception clause in 5:32 - corruption in the earth - is the hinge the two verses turn on, and 5:33 is where that clause is cashed out.
This study will not tell you which verse is the real one. Quoting 5:32 alone and calling it the Qur'an's position on killing leaves out the verse the text puts next to it. Quoting 5:33 alone and calling it the Qur'an's position leaves out the sentence it is the exception to. Both moves are available, both are common, and both are quotation rather than reading.
What settles how the exception has actually been applied - how wide 'corruption in the earth' was drawn, and by whom - is the work of the legal and interpretive literature, and no fiqh and no has cleared the rights audit here. That is an absence with a named cause. The two verses, side by side and entire, are what this platform can put in front of you.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 5:32, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

For this cause have we prescribed to the children of Israel that whoso kills a soul, unless it be for another soul or for violence in the land, it is as though he had killed men altogether; but whoso saves one, it is as though he saved men altogether. Our apostles came to them with manifest signs; then, verily, many of them did after that commit excesses in the earth
For this cause have we ordained to the children of Israel that he who slayeth any one, unless it be a person guilty of manslaughter, or of spreading disorders in the land, shall be as though he had slain all mankind; but that he who saveth a life, shall be as though he had saved all mankind alive. Of old our Apostles came to them with the proofs of their mission; then verily after this most of them committed excesses in the land
Wherefore we commanded the children of Israel, that he who slayeth a soul, without adding thereto the murder of another soul, or without committing wickedness in the earth, shall be as if he had slain all mankind: But he who saveth a soul alive, shall be as if he had saved the lives of all mankind. Our apostles formerly came unto them, with evident miracles; then were many of them, after this, transgressors on the earth

The punishment for those who fight God and His Messenger, and strive to spread corruption on earth, is that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be banished from the land. That is to disgrace them in this life; and in the Hereafter they will have a terrible punishment.

The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom
The reward of those who make war against God and His Apostle, and strive after violence in the earth, is only that they shall be slaughtered or crucified, or their hands cut off and their feet on alternate sides, or that they shall be banished from the land; - that is a disgrace for them in this world, and for them in the next is mighty woe
Only, the recompense of those who war against God and his Apostle, and go about to commit disorders on the earth, shall be that they shall be slain or crucified, or have their alternate hands and feet cut off, or be banished the land: This their disgrace in this world, and in the next a great torment shall be theirs
But the recompense of those who fight against God and his apostle, and study to act corruptly in the earth, shall be, that they shall be slain, or crucified, or have their hands and their feet cut off on the opposite sides, or be banished the land. This shall be their disgrace in this world, and in the next world they shall suffer a grievous punishment

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 5:32, 5:33, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
