And those who do not implore besides God any other god, and do not kill the soul which God has made sacred-except in the pursuit of justice-and do not commit adultery. Whoever does that will face penalties.
What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 25:68–70 And those who cry not unto any other god along with God, nor take the life which God hath forbidden save in (course of) justice, nor commit adultery - and whoso doeth this shall pay the penalty... SAVE HIM WHO REPENTETH AND BELIEVETH AND DOTH RIGHTEOUS WORK; AS FOR SUCH, GOD WILL CHANGE THEIR EVIL DEEDS TO GOOD DEEDS. In as ONE PASSAGE because the offences and the exception must be read together, and because 25:70 is the strongest statement in the Qur'an on this - not erasure but conversion.
- 02 5:33–34 The only reward of those who make war upon God and His messenger... SAVE THOSE WHO REPENT BEFORE YE OVERPOWER THEM. For know that God is Forgiving, Merciful. In as ONE PASSAGE because the exception is attached to the harshest penalty in the text and it has a deadline - before you have them in your power.
- 03 24:4–5 Scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony... SAVE THOSE WHO AFTERWARD REPENT AND MAKE AMENDS. In as ONE PASSAGE because what is reopened is a permanent civil disability. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about false accusation of adultery (qadhf)?, with a different reason there.
- 04 2:159–160 Those who hide the proofs and the guidance which We revealed - these are accursed of God and accursed of those who have the power to curse - EXCEPT THOSE WHO REPENT AND AMEND AND MAKE MANIFEST (THE TRUTH). In as ONE PASSAGE because the repentance required includes an active remedy: making manifest what was concealed.
- 05 3:89 Save those who afterward repent and DO RIGHT. Lo, God is Forgiving, Merciful. In because it follows a statement that a certain repentance will not be accepted, and re-opens it.
- 06 5:38–39 As for the thief, both male and female, cut off their hands... BUT WHOSO REPENTETH AFTER HIS WRONGDOING AND AMENDETH, lo, God will relent toward him. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the same structure attached to a fixed penalty. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an prescribe for theft?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The pattern in this study is so regular that a reader should be shown it as a pattern.
The Qur'an states a penalty, and then, usually in the very next verse, it states an exception for repentance. Theft, 5:38 then 5:39. False accusation, 24:4 then 24:5. Waging war on God and His messenger - the harshest passage in the book - 5:33 then 5:34. Concealing revealed guidance, 2:159 then 2:160. The exception is not tucked away in another surah; it is the next line.
Two of these exceptions carry conditions worth naming. 5:34 has a DEADLINE: those who repent BEFORE YE OVERPOWER THEM. Repentance after capture is not covered by that clause. And 2:160 requires more than remorse: repent, AMEND, AND MAKE MANIFEST - the person who hid the truth must now publish it.
25:70 is the strongest verse in the Qur'an on this subject, and it goes further than any of the others. Having listed the gravest offences - associating partners, unlawful killing, adultery - and stated the penalty, it says of the one who repents and believes and does righteous work: GOD WILL CHANGE THEIR EVIL DEEDS TO GOOD DEEDS. Not cancelled. Exchanged.
What none of these verses does is specify what repentance consists of procedurally, or who assesses it, or whether the human penalty is lifted along with the divine one. That question - whether 5:39 stops a hand being cut - is exactly the sort of thing the fiqh worked out, and no work of law has cleared the rights audit.
The studies Does God forgive all sins? and What does the Qur'an say about guilt and forgiving yourself?, and the study What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?, carry the rest of this ground.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 25:68–70, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Whoever repents and acts righteously-has inclined towards God with repentance.
And whosoever repenteth and doeth good, he verily repenteth toward Allah with true repentance
And he who turns again and does right, verily, he turns again to God repentant
And whose turneth to God and doeth what is right, he verily will convert with a true conversion
And whoever repenteth, and doth that which is right; verily he turneth unto God with an acceptable conversion

The punishment for those who fight God and His Messenger, and strive to spread corruption on earth, is that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be banished from the land. That is to disgrace them in this life; and in the Hereafter they will have a terrible punishment.

The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom
The reward of those who make war against God and His Apostle, and strive after violence in the earth, is only that they shall be slaughtered or crucified, or their hands cut off and their feet on alternate sides, or that they shall be banished from the land; - that is a disgrace for them in this world, and for them in the next is mighty woe
Only, the recompense of those who war against God and his Apostle, and go about to commit disorders on the earth, shall be that they shall be slain or crucified, or have their alternate hands and feet cut off, or be banished the land: This their disgrace in this world, and in the next a great torment shall be theirs
But the recompense of those who fight against God and his apostle, and study to act corruptly in the earth, shall be, that they shall be slain, or crucified, or have their hands and their feet cut off on the opposite sides, or be banished the land. This shall be their disgrace in this world, and in the next world they shall suffer a grievous punishment

Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel: that whoever kills a person-unless it is for murder or corruption on earth-it is as if he killed the whole of mankind; and whoever saves it, it is as if he saved the whole of mankind. Our messengers came to them with clarifications, but even after that, many of them continue to commit excesses in the land.
For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth
For this cause have we prescribed to the children of Israel that whoso kills a soul, unless it be for another soul or for violence in the land, it is as though he had killed men altogether; but whoso saves one, it is as though he saved men altogether. Our apostles came to them with manifest signs; then, verily, many of them did after that commit excesses in the earth
For this cause have we ordained to the children of Israel that he who slayeth any one, unless it be a person guilty of manslaughter, or of spreading disorders in the land, shall be as though he had slain all mankind; but that he who saveth a life, shall be as though he had saved all mankind alive. Of old our Apostles came to them with the proofs of their mission; then verily after this most of them committed excesses in the land
Wherefore we commanded the children of Israel, that he who slayeth a soul, without adding thereto the murder of another soul, or without committing wickedness in the earth, shall be as if he had slain all mankind: But he who saveth a soul alive, shall be as if he had saved the lives of all mankind. Our apostles formerly came unto them, with evident miracles; then were many of them, after this, transgressors on the earth

As for those who disbelieve, even if they owned everything on earth, and the like of it with it, and they offered it to ransom themselves from the torment of the Day of Resurrection, it will not be accepted from them. For them is a painful punishment.
As for those who disbelieve, lo! if all that is in the earth were theirs, and as much again therewith, to ransom them from the doom on the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them. Theirs will be a painful doom
Verily, those who disbelieve, even though they had what is in the earth, all of it, and the like thereof with it, to offer as a ransom from the punishment of the resurrection day, it would not be accepted from them; but for them is grievous woe
As to the infidels - if that they had twice the riches of the earth to be their ransom from torment on the day of resurrection, it should not be accepted from them! And a dolorous torment shall be their's
Moreover they who believe not, although they had whatever is in the earth, and as much more withal, that they might therewith redeem themselves from punishment on the day of resurrection; it shall not be accepted from them, but they shall suffer a painful punishment

Safa and Marwa are among the rites of God. Whoever makes the Pilgrimage to the House, or performs the Umrah, commits no error by circulating between them. Whoever volunteers good-God is Appreciative and Cognizant.
Lo! (the mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the indications of Allah. It is therefore no sin for him who is on pilgrimage to the House (of Allah) or visiteth it, to go around them (as the pagan custom is). And he who doeth good of his own accord, (for him) lo! Allah is Responsive, Aware

O Messenger! Do not let those who are quick to disbelief grieve you-from among those who say with their mouths, "We believe," but their hearts do not believe; and from among the Jews-listeners to lies, listeners to other people who did not come to you. They distort words from their places, and they say, "If you are given this, accept it; but if you are not given it, beware." Whomever God has willed to divert, you have nothing for him from God. Those are they whose hearts God does not intend to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them is a great punishment in the Hereafter.
O Messenger! Let not them grieve thee who vie one with another in the race to disbelief, of such as say with their mouths: "We believe," but their hearts believe not, and of the Jews: listeners for the sake of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other folk who come not unto thee, changing words from their context and saying: If this be given unto you, receive it, but if this be not given unto you, then beware! He whom Allah doometh unto sin, thou (by thine efforts) wilt avail him naught against Allah. Those are they for whom the Will of Allah is that He cleanse not their hearts. Theirs in the world will be ignominy, and in the Hereafter an awful doom
O thou Apostle! let not those grieve thee who vie in misbelief; or those who say with their mouths 'We believe,' but their hearts do not believe; or of those who are Jews, listeners to a lie, - listeners to other people, but who come not to thee. They pervert the words from their places and say, ' If this is what ye are given, take it; but if ye are not given it, then beware!' but he whom God wishes to mislead, thou canst do nothing with God for him; these are those whose hearts God wishes not to purify, for them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the next is mighty woe
O Apostle! let not those who vie with one another in speeding to infidelity vex thee; - of those who say with their mouths, "We believe," but whose hearts believe not; - or of the Jews listeners to a lie-listeners to others - but who come not to thee. They shift the words of the law from their places, and say, "If this be brought to you, receive it; but if this be not brought to you, then beware of it." For him whom God would mislead, thou canst in no wise prevail with God! They whose hearts God shall not please to cleanse, shall suffer disgrace in this world, and in the next a grievous punishment
O apostle, let not them grieve thee, who hasten to infidelity, either of those who say, we believe, with their mouths, but whose hearts believe not; or of the Jews, who hearken to a lie, and hearken to other people; who come not unto thee: They pervert the words of the law from their true places, and say, if this be brought unto you, receive it; but if it be not brought unto you, beware of receiving ought else; and in behalf of him whom God shall resolve to seduce , thou shalt not prevail with God at all. They whose hearts God shall not please to cleanse, shall suffer shame in this world, and a grievous punishment in the next
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 25:68-70, 5:33-34, 24:4-5, 2:159-160, 3:89, 5:38-39, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - save + him + who + repenteth + believeth; repent + before + ye + overpower; except + those + who + repent + amend; god + will + change + evil + deeds + good. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 19:60 - near-identical to 25:70 in structure.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
