God does not shy away from making an example of a gnat, or something above it. As for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did God intend by this example?" He leads astray many thereby, and He guides many thereby; but He misleads thereby only the evildoers.
What does the Qur'an say about parables, and why it uses them?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:26 LO, GOD DISDAINETH NOT TO COIN THE SIMILITUDE EVEN OF A GNAT, or anything above that. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: what doth God wish to teach by such a similitude? HE MISLEADETH MANY THEREBY, AND HE GUIDETH MANY THEREBY; and He misleadeth thereby only miscreants. This verse answers an objection to the practice, and its answer is that the same similitude does opposite things to different hearers.
- 02 29:43 AS FOR THESE SIMILITUDES, WE COIN THEM FOR MANKIND, BUT NONE WILL GRASP THEIR MEANING SAVE THE WISE. This verse states the purpose and the limit in a single sentence.
- 03 59:21 IF WE HAD CAUSED THIS QUR'AN TO DESCEND UPON A MOUNTAIN, THOU WOULDST HAVE SEEN IT HUMBLED, RENT ASUNDER BY THE FEAR OF GOD. SUCH SIMILITUDES COIN WE FOR MANKIND THAT HAPLY THEY MAY REFLECT. This is a parable about parables: the text imagines its own effect on a mountain, then names what it has just done.
- 04 14:24–27 Seest thou not how God coineth a similitude: A GOODLY SAYING AS A GOODLY TREE, its root set firm, its branches reaching into heaven, GIVING ITS FRUIT AT EVERY SEASON by permission of its Lord. And the similitude of a bad saying is as a bad tree uprooted from upon the earth, possessing no stability. The pair is one construction, and the second half is unintelligible without the first.
- 05 13:17 He sendeth down water from the sky, so that valleys flow according to their measure, and the flood beareth swelling foam... THUS GOD COINETH THE SIMILITUDES OF TRUTH AND FALSEHOOD. Then, as for the foam, it passeth away as scum upon the banks, while, as for that which is of use to mankind, it remaineth in the earth. This is a sustained parable that names itself as one in the middle of its own telling.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur’an says that it sets out parables so people may remember, reflect or understand (14:25; 39:27; 59:21). Its examples draw on ordinary images—light, rain, gardens, trade, insects, houses and human relationships—to make moral and spiritual relationships perceptible.
Parables do not guarantee agreement. Qur’an 2:26 says that an example as small as a mosquito can guide some while others object to it; the response reveals the hearer’s disposition. Qur’an 29:43 similarly says that such examples are understood by those with knowledge. A parable therefore invites thought rather than functioning as a code with an automatic single answer.
The Qur’an uses parables to compare, warn, expose inconsistency and translate abstract claims into recognisable scenes. Interpretation should begin with the relationship the passage itself draws, not with free association around every detail. Where later commentators disagree about an image, AALAMIN should show the range and avoid presenting an imaginative extension as part of the source text.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:26, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Lo! Allah disdaineth not to coin the similitude even of a gnat. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: What doth Allah wish (to teach) by such a similitude? He misleadeth many thereby, and He guideth many thereby; and He misleadeth thereby only miscreants
Why, God is not ashamed to set forth a parable of a gnat, or anything beyond; and as for those who believe, they know that it is truth from the Lord; but as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What is it that God means by this as a parable? He leads astray many and He guides many;' - but He leads astray only the evildoers
Verily God is not ashamed to set forth as well the instance of a gnat as of any nobler object: for as to those who have believed, they know it to be the truth from their Lord; but as to the unbelievers, they will say, "What meaneth God by this comparison?" Many will He mislead by such parables and many guide: but none will He mislead thereby except the wicked
Moreover God will not be ashamed to propound in a parable a gnat, or even a more despicable thing; for they who believe will know it to be the truth from their Lord; but the unbelievers will say, What meaneth God by this parable? He will thereby mislead many, and will direct many thereby: but He will not mislead any thereby, except the transgressors

Заиста се Аллах не устручава да за пример наведе комарца или нешто изнад њега; они који верују - па они знају да је то Истина од Господара њиховог; а они који не верују говоре: "Шта то Аллах хоће овим примером?" Тиме Он даје да многи у заблуду скрену, а многе на Прави пут упућује, а тиме на странпутицу скреће само развратнике;

14:24 24. Argi nematote, kaip Allahas nustatė palyginimus? Gražus žodis kaip gražus medis, kurio šaknys tvirtai įtaisytos ir kurio šakos (siekia) dangų (t. y. labai aukštai).
14:25 25. Nuolat teikiantis vaisius, savo Viešpaties Leidimu, ir Allahas nustato palyginimus žmonijai tam, kad jie prisimintų.

I had no authority over you, except that I called you, and you answered me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot come to your aid, nor can you come to my aid. The translators word this verse differently
He sends down water from the sky, and riverbeds flow according to their capacity. The current carries swelling froth. And from what they heat in fire of ornaments or utensils comes a similar froth. Thus God exemplifies truth and falsehood. As for the froth, it is swept away, but what benefits the people remains in the ground. Thus God presents the analogies.
Compare translations (4)
He sendeth down water from the sky, so that valleys flow according to their measure, and the flood beareth (on its surface) swelling foam - from that which they smelt in the fire in order to make ornaments and tools riseth a foam like unto it - thus Allah coineth (the similitude of) the true and the false. Then, as for the foam, it passeth away as scum upon the banks, while, as for that which is of use to mankind, it remaineth in the earth. Thus Allah coineth the similitudes
He sends down from the sky water, and the water-courses flow according to their bulk, and the torrent bears along the floating scum: and from what they set fire to, craving ornaments or utensils, comes a scum like that;- thus does God hit the truth and the falsehood;- and as for the scum it is thrown off, and as for what profits man it stays on the earth. Thus does God strike out parables
He sendeth down the rain from Heaven: then flow the torrents in their due measure, and the flood beareth along a swelling foam. And from the metals which are molten in the fire for the sake of ornaments or utensils, a like scum ariseth. In this way doth God depict (set forth) truth and falsehood. As to the foam, it is quickly gone: and as to what is useful to man, it remaineth on the earth. Thus doth God set forth comparisons
He causeth water to descend from heaven, and the brooks flow according to their respective measure, and the floods bear the floating froth: And from the metals which they melt in the fire, seeking to cast ornaments or vessels for use, there ariseth a scum like unto it: Thus God setteth forth truth and vanity. But the scum is thrown off, and that which is useful to mankind remaineth on the earth. Thus doth God put forth parables

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Ameteremsha maji kutoka mbinguni.

To God prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows, in the morning and in the evening.
And unto Allah falleth prostrate whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows in the morning and the evening hours
And God do those who are in the heavens and the earth adore, whether they will or no! as do their shadows also morn and eve

For those who respond to their Lord is the best. But as for those who do not respond to Him, even if they possessed everything on earth, and twice as much, they could not redeem themselves with it. Those will have the worst reckoning; and their home is Hell-a miserable destination.
For those who answered Allah's call is bliss; and for those who answered not His call, if they had all that is in the earth, and therewith the like thereof, they would proffer it as ransom. Such will have a woeful reckoning, and their habitation will be hell, a dire abode
For those who respond to their Lord is good; but those who respond not to Him, had they all that is in the earth and the like thereof as well, they would give it for a ransom; these shall have an evil reckoning up! and their resort is hell,- an evil couch shall it be
To those who respond to their Lord shall be an excellent reward; but those who respond not to his call, had they all that the earth containeth twice over, they would surely give it for their ransom. Evil their reckoning! and Hell their home! And wretched the bed
Unto those who obey their Lord, shall be given the most excellent reward: But those who obey Him not, although they were possessed of whatever is in the whole earth and as much more, they would give it all for their ransom. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:26, 29:43, 59:21, 14:24-27, 13:17, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - god + disdaineth + not + to + coin + the + similitude; coineth + similitudes + for + mankind; such + similitudes + we + coin + for + mankind + that + haply + they + may + reflect; none + understandeth + them + save + the + wise. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed earlier, and this study's inclusion reasons were rewritten as plain English. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
