O Children of Adam! Dress properly at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. He does not love the excessive.
What does the Qur'an say about water and not wasting it?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:31 O Children of Adam, look to your adornment at every place of worship, and EAT AND DRINK BUT BE NOT PRODIGAL; lo! He loveth not the prodigals. In because it is the only verse in the text that attaches a prohibition on waste directly to eating and drinking, and because the prohibition is general rather than tied to scarcity.
- 02 23:18 And We send down from the sky water IN MEASURE, and We give it lodging in the earth, and lo! We are able to withdraw it. In because it states that the supply is measured and then says it can be taken away, which is the sharpest thing said about water anywhere here.
- 03 43:11 And Who sendeth down water from the sky in due measure, and We revive a dead land therewith. Even so will ye be brought forth. In because it repeats in measure and then turns the water into an argument about resurrection.
- 04 13:17 He sendeth down water from the sky, so that valleys flow ACCORDING TO THEIR MEASURE, and the flood beareth swelling foam. In because the measure here belongs to the receiving valley rather than to the sending, which is a different sense worth keeping.
- 05 15:22 And We send the winds fertilising, and cause water to descend from the sky, and give it you to drink; AND IT IS NOT YE WHO ARE THE HOLDERS OF THE STORE THEREOF. In because the last clause denies human ownership of the supply, which is the nearest thing here to a reason not to waste it. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about winds and rain as signs?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and the honest finding is that the Qur'an says a great deal about water and very little about wasting it.
There is exactly ONE verse prohibiting waste in a context a reader would recognise, and water is not actually its subject. 7:31: eat and drink, but be not prodigal; He loves not the prodigals. It is a general prohibition on excess attached to consumption, and it is the verse every discussion of Islamic water ethics reaches for.
What the text does say a great deal about is MEASURE. 23:18 and 43:11 both say water is sent down in measure. 13:17 uses the word differently and interestingly - the valleys flow ACCORDING TO THEIR MEASURE, so the measure is in the receiver, not only in the gift.
Two clauses do more work than the rest. 23:18 ends: and lo, We are able to withdraw it. And 15:22 ends: and it is not ye who are the holders of the store thereof. Between them they say the supply is not owned by the people using it and is not guaranteed to them. That is the closest the text comes to an argument for restraint, and it is an argument from dependence rather than from scarcity or from stewardship.
A reader should be told plainly what is not here. There is no verse about not wasting water in ablution, no quantity, and no instruction about rivers, wells or irrigation. The well-known teaching about not wasting water even at a flowing river is a , and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit. The wudu verse 5:6 was dropped from this study because its subject is how to wash, not how much to use.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:31, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The translators word this verse differently
He sends down water from the sky, and riverbeds flow according to their capacity. The current carries swelling froth. And from what they heat in fire of ornaments or utensils comes a similar froth. Thus God exemplifies truth and falsehood. As for the froth, it is swept away, but what benefits the people remains in the ground. Thus God presents the analogies.
Compare translations (4)
He sendeth down water from the sky, so that valleys flow according to their measure, and the flood beareth (on its surface) swelling foam - from that which they smelt in the fire in order to make ornaments and tools riseth a foam like unto it - thus Allah coineth (the similitude of) the true and the false. Then, as for the foam, it passeth away as scum upon the banks, while, as for that which is of use to mankind, it remaineth in the earth. Thus Allah coineth the similitudes
He sends down from the sky water, and the water-courses flow according to their bulk, and the torrent bears along the floating scum: and from what they set fire to, craving ornaments or utensils, comes a scum like that;- thus does God hit the truth and the falsehood;- and as for the scum it is thrown off, and as for what profits man it stays on the earth. Thus does God strike out parables
He sendeth down the rain from Heaven: then flow the torrents in their due measure, and the flood beareth along a swelling foam. And from the metals which are molten in the fire for the sake of ornaments or utensils, a like scum ariseth. In this way doth God depict (set forth) truth and falsehood. As to the foam, it is quickly gone: and as to what is useful to man, it remaineth on the earth. Thus doth God set forth comparisons
He causeth water to descend from heaven, and the brooks flow according to their respective measure, and the floods bear the floating froth: And from the metals which they melt in the fire, seeking to cast ornaments or vessels for use, there ariseth a scum like unto it: Thus God setteth forth truth and vanity. But the scum is thrown off, and that which is useful to mankind remaineth on the earth. Thus doth God put forth parables

Ameteremsha maji kutoka mbinguni.

To God prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows, in the morning and in the evening.
And unto Allah falleth prostrate whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows in the morning and the evening hours
And God do those who are in the heavens and the earth adore, whether they will or no! as do their shadows also morn and eve
And unto God doth all in the Heavens and on the Earth bow down in worship, willingly or by constraint: their very shadows also morn and even
Whatsoever is in heaven and on earth worshippeth God, voluntarily or of force; and their shadows also, morning and evening

For those who respond to their Lord is the best. But as for those who do not respond to Him, even if they possessed everything on earth, and twice as much, they could not redeem themselves with it. Those will have the worst reckoning; and their home is Hell-a miserable destination.
For those who answered Allah's call is bliss; and for those who answered not His call, if they had all that is in the earth, and therewith the like thereof, they would proffer it as ransom. Such will have a woeful reckoning, and their habitation will be hell, a dire abode
For those who respond to their Lord is good; but those who respond not to Him, had they all that is in the earth and the like thereof as well, they would give it for a ransom; these shall have an evil reckoning up! and their resort is hell,- an evil couch shall it be
To those who respond to their Lord shall be an excellent reward; but those who respond not to his call, had they all that the earth containeth twice over, they would surely give it for their ransom. Evil their reckoning! and Hell their home! And wretched the bed
Unto those who obey their Lord, shall be given the most excellent reward: But those who obey Him not, although they were possessed of whatever is in the whole earth and as much more, they would give it all for their ransom. These will be brought to a terrible account: Their abode shall be hell; an unhappy couch shall it be

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:31, 23:18, 43:11, 13:17, 15:22, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - send + down + water + measure; water + measure; water + sink; eat + drink + exceed; eat + drink + not + excess; water + drink + send; rain + measure; down + measure + water. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 5:6; 16:10; 18:41. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
