O you who believe! Seek help through patience and prayers. God is with the steadfast.
What does the Qur'an say about patience through trial?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:153 Seek help in patience and prayer, and God is with the patient. The plainest statement in the set.
- 02 2:155 Names the trial in advance - fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and crops - and then gives good tidings to the patient.
- 03 2:177 Lists the patient in adversity among the marks of righteousness, beside belief, giving, prayer and keeping a treaty.
- 04 3:17 Names the patient first in a short list of qualities. The highest-divergence verse in the set, at 0.71 on the five-based measure and 0.70 on the four-based measure it was signed over - the highest in the set on both. Patient in Palmer, Sale, Rodwell and Itani; steadfast in Pickthall.
- 05 3:120 Attaches patience and God-fearing to being unharmed by another's guile.
- 06 3:125 Attaches perseverance and God-fearing to help at a moment of sudden attack. Persevere in Sale, Pickthall and Itani; steadfast in Rodwell; patient in Palmer - the verse where the word this study is about is furthest from settled.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
These verses put patience next to the trial rather than instead of it. 2:155 says plainly that the trial is coming - something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth and lives and crops - and then gives good tidings to the patient. 2:153 says to seek help in patience and prayer, and that God is with the patient.
2:177 is the one that places it: after belief, after giving to kin and orphans and the needy and to freeing slaves, after prayer and alms and keeping a treaty, it names those who are patient in adversity and hardship and in time of stress, and calls them the sincere. Patience is listed there as one thing among several done, not as a mood.
The renderings do not agree on the word, and the version of this study signed on 2026-09-05 described that disagreement wrongly. It said that Pickthall renders the word steadfast where Sale, Rodwell and Palmer have patient, and that the difference runs through every verse here. Read at all six verses, on the four renderings it was signed over, it holds at three of them - 2:153, 2:155 and 3:17 - and breaks at the other three. At 2:177 Pickthall writes the patient in tribulation, not steadfast. At 3:120 and 3:125 it is Rodwell who writes steadfast and Pickthall who writes persevere, which is the mapping the sentence asserts, reversed. Sale writes patiently at 2:177 and persevere at 3:125. THIS WAS WRONG WHEN IT WAS SIGNED, AND ITANI DID NOT MAKE IT WRONG. It is withdrawn here.
What the five do is use three words between them, and only one translator holds to one. Palmer writes patient at all six - and also writes steadfast at 2:177, of prayer rather than of the quality this study is about, which is the hazard in counting a word rather than reading it. Rodwell writes patient at four verses and steadfast at two. Sale writes patient at four, patiently at one and persevere at one. Pickthall writes steadfast at three, patient at one and persevere at two. Itani, read now, writes patience and steadfast at 2:153, steadfast at 2:155, patiently persevere at 2:177, patient at 3:17, and persevere at 3:120 and 3:125 - all three words across six verses. Whether one English word is carrying what the Arabic carries is a question the spread poses and this study does not answer.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:153, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But righteous is he who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due. And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the Allah-fearing
Righteousness is not that ye turn your faces towards the east or the west, but righteousness is, one who believes in God, and the last day, and the angels, and the Book, and the prophets, and who gives wealth for His love to kindred, and orphans, and the poor, and the son of the road, beggars, and those in captivity; and who is steadfast in prayer, and gives alms; and those who are sure of their covenant when they make a covenant; and the patient in poverty, and distress, and in time of violence; these are they who are true, and these are those who fear
There is no piety in turning your faces toward the east or the west, but he is pious who believeth in God, and the last day, and the angels, and the Scriptures, and the prophets; who for the love of God disburseth his wealth to his kindred, and to the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and those who ask, and for ransoming; who observeth prayer, and payeth the legal alms, and who is of those who are faithful to their engagements when they have engaged in them, and patient under ills and hardships, and in time of trouble: these are they who are just, and these are they who fear the Lord
It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces in prayer towards the east and the west, but righteousness is of him who believeth in God and the last day, and the angels, and the scriptures, and the prophets; who giveth money for God's sake unto his kindred, and unto orphans, and the needy, and the stranger, and those who ask, and for redemption of captives; who is constant at prayer, and giveth alms; and of those who perform their covenant, when they have covenanted, and who behave themselves patiently in adversity, and hardships, and in time of violence: These are they who are true, and these are they who fear God

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Fakat iyilik Allah’a, ahiret gününe, meleklere, kitaba ve peygamberlere iman eden, malına olan sevgisine rağmen; akrabaya, yetimlere, yoksullara, yolda kalmışlara, isteyenlere, kölelere ve esirlere veren, namazı dosdoğru kılan, zekâtı veren, sözleştikleri zaman sözlerini yerine getiren, sıkıntıda, hastalıkta ve savaşta sabredenlerin yaptıklarıdır. İşte doğru ve takvalı olanlar onlardır.

It is they who exchange guidance for error, and forgiveness for punishment. But why do they insist on the Fire?
Those are they who purchase error at the price of guidance, and torment at the price of pardon. How constant are they in their strife to reach the Fire
They who sell guidance for error, and pardon for torment, how patient must they be of fire
These are they who have bartered guidance for error, and pardon for torment; But how great their endurance in fire
These are they who have sold direction for error, and pardon for punishment: But how great will their suffering be in the fire

That is because God has revealed the Book in truth; and those who differ about the Book are in deep discord.
That is because Allah hath revealed the Scripture with the truth. Lo! those who find (a cause of) disagreement in the Scripture are in open schism
That (is), because God has revealed the Book with truth, and verily those who disagree about the Book are in a wide schism
This shall be their doom, because God had sent down "the Book" with the very truth. And verily they who dispute about that Book are in a far-gone severance from it
This they shall endure, because God sent down the book of the Koran with truth, and they who disagree concerning that book, are certainly in a wide mistake

O you who believe! Retaliation for the murdered is ordained upon you: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But if he is forgiven by his kin, then grant any reasonable demand, and pay with good will. This is a concession from your Lord, and a mercy. But whoever commits aggression after that, a painful torment awaits him.
O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered; the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. And for him who is forgiven somewhat by his (injured) brother, prosecution according to usage and payment unto him in kindness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. He who transgresseth after this will have a painful doom
O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you for the slain: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female; yet he who is pardoned at all by his brother, must be prosecuted in reason, and made to pay with kindness. That is an alleviation from your Lord, and a mercy; and he who transgresses after that for him is grievous woe
O believers! retaliation for bloodshedding is prescribed to you: the free man for the free, and the slave for the slave, and the woman for the woman: but he to whom his brother shall make any remission, is to be dealt with equitably; and to him should he pay a fine with liberality. This is a relaxation from your Lord and a mercy. For him who after his shall transgress, a sore punishment
O true believers, the law of retaliation is ordained you for the slain: The free shall die for the free, and the servant for the servant, and a woman for a woman: But he whom his brother shall forgive, may be prosecuted, and obliged to make satisfaction according to what is just, and a fine shall be set on him with humanity. This is indulgence from your Lord, and mercy. And he who shall transgress after this, by killing the murderer, shall suffer a grievous punishment

For you in retaliation is there life, O ye possessors of minds! it may be ye will fear
But in this law of retaliation is your security for life, O men of understanding! to the intent that ye may fear God
And in this law of retaliation ye have life, O ye of understanding, that peradventure ye may fear

Lo! religion with Allah (is) the Surrender (to His Will and Guidance). Those who (formerly) received the Scripture differed only after knowledge came unto them, through transgression among themselves. Whoso disbelieveth the revelations of Allah (will find that) lo! Allah is swift at reckoning

Remember when you left your home in the morning, to assign battle-positions for the believers. God is Hearing and Knowing.
And when thou settedst forth at daybreak from thy housefolk to assign to the believers their positions for the battle, Allah was Hearer, Knower
When thou didst set forth early from thy people to settle for the believers a camp to fight;- but God both hears and knows
And remember when thou didst leave thy household at early morn, that thou mightest prepare the faithful a camp for the war; - God heard, knew it

He thus cuts off a section of those who disbelieved, or subdues them, so they retreat disappointed.
That He may cut off a part of those who disbelieve, or overwhelm them so that they retire, frustrated
to cut off the flank of those who misbelieve, or make them downcast, that they may retire disappointed
and that He might cut off the uttermost part of those who believed not, or cast them down so that they should be overthrown, defeated without resource
That he should cut off the uttermost part of the unbelievers, or cast them down, or that they should be overthrown and unsuccessful, is nothing to thee
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 2:153, 2:155, 2:177, 3:17, 3:120, 3:125, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-09-05 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles the word. AND A CLAIM THIS STUDY PUBLISHED IS WITHDRAWN AS FALSE. It said that Pickthall renders the word steadfast where Sale, Rodwell and Palmer have patient, and that the difference runs through every verse here. Measured on 2026-09-08 across the four renderings it was signed over, that pairing holds at 2:153, 2:155 and 3:17 and fails at 2:177, 3:120 and 3:125: at 2:177 Pickthall writes patient, at 3:120 and 3:125 Rodwell writes steadfast and Pickthall writes persevere, and Sale writes patiently at 2:177 and persevere at 3:125. The claim was already untrue on the day it was signed, and Itani did not cause it - the study's own anchor reason at 3:125 already said perseverance while its synthesis said the split was patient against steadfast. What Itani adds: he uses all three words across the six verses, so no rendering-to-word mapping survives him either. The synthesis now states the distribution translator by translator, measured. The divergence figures below are restated on the five-based measure. What did not change: the verse set, the finding that these verses put patience beside the trial rather than instead of it, and the reasons per verse other than the two noted below.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set began as a word search over the four renderings that had cleared the rights audit at the time, run in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and was then confirmed by the Editor. THE TERMS OF THAT SEARCH WERE NOT RECORDED IN THE SIGNED STUDY and cannot be recovered, so it has not been re-run; what follows is a fresh probe, recorded in full, whose results were read but from which nothing was taken. The re-check over five translations added and removed no verse. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose.
PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. The version signed when four translations were cleared named no search terms; this re-check over five translations records its own, and they are the words the study's finding is about. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["patient"] - 73 verses, reaching all six anchors; ["steadfast"] - 89, reaching all six; ["persevere"] - 32, reaching three; ["patience"] - 51, reaching one; ["patiently"] - 30, reaching one; ["persevered"] - 7, ["endure"] - 37 and ["constancy"] - 18, reaching none. Union 158 verses, of which 152 are not anchors of this study. THE UNION IS NOT A CANDIDATE SET FOR THIS STUDY and no verse was taken from it: the set was confirmed by the Editor, not by the union. Three results are recorded because they bear on the finding. "patient" and "steadfast" each reach all six anchors, which is the measurement that disproves the withdrawn claim: if one word belonged to Pickthall and the other to the remaining three at every verse, neither probe could reach every anchor in more than one rendering, and both do. "persevere" reaches three of the six, in Sale, Pickthall and Itani. And the probes were read verse by verse rather than counted: Palmer's steadfast at 2:177 is about prayer, not about this quality, and a count that did not read it would have recorded a fourth translator using the word for the thing this study is about.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. Across this set the derived divergence measure, recomputed over five renderings on 2026-09-07, runs from band 1 at 2:155 (0.49), where the five stand closest, to band 5 at 3:17 (0.71), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared named the same two verses, at 0.47 and 0.70, and both bands are unchanged. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
