We will certainly test you with some fear and hunger, and some loss of possessions and lives and crops. But give good news to the steadfast.
What does the Qur'an say about facing the death of a loved one?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:155–157 We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast - who say, when a misfortune striketh them: lo, we are God's and unto Him we are returning. Such are they on whom are blessings from their Lord, and mercy. In as ONE PASSAGE because 2:155 names the loss, 2:156 supplies the words to say, and 2:157 states what follows - and the sentence most people know is the middle one, which is not a complete thought without the other two.
- 02 3:145 No soul can ever die except by God's leave and at a term appointed. In because it is the premise the consolation rests on, and it is stated as fact rather than comfort. ALSO CARRIED by good-end, with a different reason there.
- 03 2:46 Who know that they will have to meet their Lord, and that unto Him they are returning. In because it states the return as something known rather than as something said in grief, which is the other half of 2:156.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Three passages, and the first of them is the one people actually reach for.
2:156 - we are God's, and to Him we are returning - is said at Muslim funerals and on hearing bad news. What a reader should see is that it does not stand alone in the text. It arrives inside a three-verse passage, and the passage does something the single sentence does not.
2:155 names the losses first, and names them concretely: fear, hunger, loss of wealth, loss of LIVES, loss of crops. It calls them a trial and does not soften them. Then 2:156 gives the words. Then 2:157 says what rests on the people who say them - blessings from their Lord, and mercy, and guidance.
So the famous sentence is the middle term of an argument, not a formula on its own. It is preceded by an acknowledgement that the loss is real and followed by a response that is not the removal of the loss.
3:145 supplies the premise: no soul dies except by God's leave, at a term appointed. It is offered as a fact, and a reader in grief may find it hard rather than consoling. This study does not dress it up.
2:46 shows the same return spoken of outside grief - as something the humble already know.
What is not here: any instruction about how to comfort the bereaved, anything about the funeral, and any promise about reunion. The mourning period is a separate question and is carried by mourning; whether the dead are aware of the living is carried by dead-and-living, and its answer is not the one most readers expect.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:155–157, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Safa and Marwa are among the rites of God. Whoever makes the Pilgrimage to the House, or performs the Umrah, commits no error by circulating between them. Whoever volunteers good-God is Appreciative and Cognizant.
Lo! (the mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the indications of Allah. It is therefore no sin for him who is on pilgrimage to the House (of Allah) or visiteth it, to go around them (as the pagan custom is). And he who doeth good of his own accord, (for him) lo! Allah is Responsive, Aware
Verily, Zafa and Merwah are of the beacons of God, and he who makes the pilgrimage unto the House, or visits it, it is no crime for him to compass them both about; and he who obeys his own impulse to a good work,- God is grateful and doth know
Verily, Safa and Marwah are among the monuments of God: whoever then maketh a pilgrimage to the temple, or visiteth it, shall not be to blame if he go round about them both. And as for him who of his own accord doeth what is good - God is Grateful, Knowing
Moreover Safa and Merwah are two of the monuments of God: Whoever therefore goeth on pilgrimage to the temple of Mecca or visiteth it, it shall be no crime in him if he compass them both. And as for him who voluntarily performeth a good work; verily God is grateful and knowing

Those who suppress the proofs and the guidance We have revealed, after We have clarified them to humanity in the Scripture-those-God curses them, and the cursers curse them.
Lo! Those who hide the proofs and the guidance which We revealed, after We had made it clear to mankind in the Scripture: such are accursed of Allah and accursed of those who have the power to curse
Verily, those who hide what we have revealed of manifest signs and of guidance after we have manifested it to men in the Book, them God shall curse, and those who curse shall curse them too
They who conceal aught that we have sent down, either of clear proof or of guidance, after what we have so clearly shewn to men in the Book, God shall curse them, and they who curse shall curse them
They who conceal any of the evident signs, or the direction which we have sent down, after what we have manifested unto men in the scripture, God shall curse them; and they who curse shall curse them

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:155-157, 3:145, 2:46, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - belong + god + return; unto + him + returning; glad + tidings + patient; afflicted + calamity. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 11:123 - the return of affairs, not of persons - and the verse's subject is trust in God; 28:70 - a general statement in a passage about God's sole divinity; 28:85 - addressed to the Prophet about a place, not about death; 41:51 - the subject is inconstancy in adversity - it is carried by crying-out.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
