O you who believe! Kneel, and prostrate, and worship your Lord, and do good deeds, so that you may succeed.
What does the Qur'an say about standing, bowing and prostrating in prayer?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 22:77 O ye who believe! BOW DOWN AND PROSTRATE YOURSELVES, and worship your Lord, and do good. This is here because it names both postures as a direct command, which is the clearest instance in the set.
- 02 2:43 Establish worship, pay the poor-due, and BOW YOUR HEADS WITH THOSE WHO BOW. This is here because the bowing is given as a thing done WITH OTHERS - the congregational note is in the instruction itself. ALSO CARRIED by How much charity does the Qur'an require (zakat)? and by What does the Qur'an say about how to pray - and what does it not give?
- 03 3:43 O MARY! Be obedient to thy Lord, PROSTRATE THYSELF AND BOW WITH THOSE WHO BOW. This is here because the same two postures are commanded to a figure outside the Muslim community, which shows the text treating them as the shape of worship rather than as a new ritual. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about how to pray - and what does it not give?
- 04 48:29 Thou seest them BOWING AND FALLING PROSTRATE, seeking bounty from Allah and acceptance. This is here because it DESCRIBES the postures being performed rather than commanding them, which is a different kind of evidence.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The postures are in the text. The sequence is not.
Two of them are named repeatedly and unmistakably. 22:77 commands both: bow down and prostrate yourselves. 2:43 commands the bowing and adds that it is done with those who bow. 3:43 gives the same two to Mary - prostrate yourself, and bow with those who bow - which is worth noticing, because it shows the text treating these postures as the shape worship takes generally rather than as something introduced for one community. And 48:29 describes rather than commands: you see them bowing and falling prostrate, seeking bounty and acceptance.
Standing appears elsewhere, on pages other than this one - 2:238, in the study What does the Qur'an say about how to pray - and what does it not give?, says stand before God devoutly, and 3:191 speaks of remembering God standing, sitting and reclining.
So a reader can establish from the text alone that Muslim prayer involves standing, bowing and prostration, and that the bowing is characteristically done in company.
What the text nowhere gives is the ORDER and the COUNT. How many bowings in a unit, how many prostrations, how many units in each prayer, what is said in each posture, how one moves between them - none of that is here. The rak'a as a structure does not appear in the Qur'an.
That structure comes from the Prophet's practice, transmitted in and settled in the schools. This platform cannot show you a word of it: no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit, and that absence has a named cause.
The division is clean enough to state in a sentence. The text gives the postures. The practice gives the sequence.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 22:77, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

These are accounts from the Unseen, which We reveal to you. You were not with them when they cast their lots as to which of them would take charge of Mary; nor were you with them as they quarreled.

The translators word this verse differently
Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those with him are stern against the disbelievers, yet compassionate amongst themselves. You see them kneeling, prostrating, seeking blessings from God and approval. Their marks are on their faces from the effects of prostration. Such is their description in the Torah, and their description in the Gospel: like a plant that sprouts, becomes strong, grows thick, and rests on its stem, impressing the farmers. Through them He enrages the disbelievers. God has promised those among them who believe and do good deeds forgiveness and a great reward.
Compare translations (4)
Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. Thou (O Muhammad) seest them bowing and falling prostrate (in worship), seeking bounty from Allah and (His) acceptance. The mark of them is on their foreheads from the traces of prostration. Such is their likeness in the Torah and their likeness in the Gospel - like as sown corn that sendeth forth its shoot and strengtheneth it and riseth firm upon its stalk, delighting the sowers - that He may enrage the disbelievers with (the sight of) them. Allah hath promised, unto such of them as believe and do good works, forgiveness and immense reward
Mohammed is the Apostle of God, and those who are with Him are vehement against the misbelievers,- compassionate amongst themselves; thou mayest see them bowing down, adoring, craving grace from God and His goodwill,- their marks are in their faces from the effects of adoration;- that is their similitude in the law and their similitude in the gospel; as a seedling puts forth its sprouts and strengthens it, and grows stout, and straightens itself upon its stem, delighting the sower!- that the misbelievers may be angry at them;- God has promised those of them who believe and do right - forgiveness and a mighty hire
Muhammad is the Apostle of God; and his comrades are vehement against the infidels, but full of tenderness among themselves. Thou mayst see them bowing down, prostrating themselves, imploring favours from God, and His acceptance. Their tokens are on their faces, the marks of their prostrations. This is their picture in the Law, and their picture in the Evangel: they are as the seed which putteth forth its stalk; then strengtheneth it, and it groweth stout, and riseth upon its stem, rejoicing the husbandman - that the infidels may be wrathful at them. To such of them as believe and do the things that are right, hath God promised forgiveness and a noble recompense
Mohammed is the apostle of God: And those who are with him are fierce against the unbelievers, but compassionate towards one another. Thou mayest see them bowing down, prostrate, seeking a recompense from God, and his good will. Their signs are in their faces, being marks of frequent prostration. This is their description in the pentateuch, and their description in the gospel: They are as seed which putteth forth its stalk, and strengtheneth it, and swelleth in the ear, and riseth upon its stem; giving delight unto the sower. Such are the Moslems described to be: That the infidels may swell with indignation at them. God hath promised unto such of them as believe, and do good works, pardon and a great reward

God has fulfilled His Messenger's vision in truth: "You will enter the Sacred Mosque, God willing, in security, heads shaven, or hair cut short, not fearing. He knew what you did not know, and has granted besides that an imminent victory."

Now hath God in truth verified unto his apostle the vision, wherein He said; ye shall surely enter the holy temple of Mecca, if God please, in full security; having your heads shaved, and your hair cut: Ye shall not fear: For God knoweth that which ye know not; and He hath appointed you, besides this, a speedy victory

It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religions. God suffices as Witness.

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 22:77, 2:43, 3:43, 48:29, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
