What does the Qur'an say about Mary (Maryam)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:42–43 And when the angels said: O MARY, LO, GOD HATH CHOSEN THEE AND MADE THEE PURE, AND HATH PREFERRED THEE ABOVE ALL THE WOMEN OF CREATION. O Mary, be obedient to thy Lord, prostrate thyself and bow with those who bow. In as ONE PASSAGE because the election and the instruction are consecutive, and because no other woman in the Qur'an is spoken to this way.
- 02 19:16–26 And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking east... And the pangs of childbirth drove her unto the trunk of the palm-tree. She said: OH, WOULD THAT I HAD DIED ERE THIS AND HAD BECOME A THING FORGOTTEN. Then one cried unto her from below her: grieve not... AND SHAKE THE TRUNK OF THE PALM-TREE TOWARD THEE, THOU WILT CAUSE RIPE DATES TO FALL UPON THEE. So eat and drink and be consoled. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the fullest narrative about any woman in the Qur'an and because 19:23 records her wishing she were dead - which the text does not soften.
- 03 19:27–33 Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary, thou hast come with an amazing thing... THEN SHE POINTED TO HIM. They said: how can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy? HE SPAKE: LO, I AM THE SLAVE OF GOD. In as ONE PASSAGE because her defence is a gesture rather than a word, and the answer is given by the child.
- 04 66:12 AND MARY, DAUGHTER OF 'IMRAN, whose body was chaste, therefor We breathed therein something of Our Spirit. AND SHE PUT FAITH IN THE WORDS OF HER LORD AND HIS SCRIPTURES, AND WAS OF THE OBEDIENT. In because it is the closing verse of a surah about examples, and it describes her by her belief rather than by her motherhood. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the virgin birth of Jesus?, with a different reason there.
- 05 3:35–37 When the wife of 'Imran said: my Lord, I have vowed unto Thee that which is in my belly as a consecrated offering. Accept it from me... AND LO, I HAVE NAMED HER MARY, and lo, I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast. And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance... WHENEVER ZACHARIAH WENT INTO THE SANCTUARY WHERE SHE WAS, HE FOUND THAT SHE HAD FOOD. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is her birth and childhood and contains the exchange about the food. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about provision (rizq) coming from God?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Mary is the only woman named in the Qur'an, a surah bears her name, and 3:42 says something said of no one else: GOD HATH CHOSEN THEE AND MADE THEE PURE, AND HATH PREFERRED THEE ABOVE ALL THE WOMEN OF CREATION.
What is striking is how little of the material is about her son.
3:35-37 is her birth. Her mother vows the child in her womb to God's service, is surprised at delivering a girl, names her, and asks protection for her and her offspring. Then Zachariah keeps finding food with her and asks where it comes from, and she answers: IT IS FROM GOD.
19:16-26 is the fullest narrative about any woman in the book, and the text does not make it serene. Alone, in labour, against a palm trunk, she says: OH, WOULD THAT I HAD DIED ERE THIS AND HAD BECOME A THING FORGOTTEN. The Qur'an records that sentence without qualification. And the comfort offered is practical - a stream beneath her, and SHAKE THE TRUNK TOWARD THEE and dates will fall. Eat, drink, be consoled.
19:27-33 is her return. Accused, she does not defend herself: SHE POINTED TO HIM. The reply is given by the infant, and its first words are I AM THE SLAVE OF GOD.
19:28 holds the name a question is often asked about. The people speak to her, and Itani has "O sister of Aaron", and the other four print the same words. The verse gives the name in the people's words and does not say who this Aaron is. Two other verses here tie her to Imran. At 3:35 Sale has "the wife of Imran", the mother who names her. At 66:12 Rodwell has "Mary, the daughter of Imran". Some readers set these names beside other writings and ask whether the text has joined two women into one. That comparison is history, and this study does not make it. The five print the names and do not explain them.
66:12 closes a surah of examples with her, and describes her by what she did rather than what happened to her: SHE PUT FAITH IN THE WORDS OF HER LORD AND HIS SCRIPTURES, AND WAS OF THE OBEDIENT.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:42–43, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

19:26 Ha, pi dhe gëzohu! Nëse sheh ndonjë njeri, thuaji: "Unë jam zotuar para të Gjithëmëshirshmit se do të përmbahem nga të folurit, prandaj nuk do t'i flas sot asnjë njeriu."
19:19 “A ja sam upravo izaslanik Gospodara tvog”, reče on, “da ti poklonim dječaka čista!”
19:20 “Kako ću imati dječaka”, reče ona, “kad me nijedan muškarac dodirnuo nije, a ja nisam nevaljalica!”

19:24 Allora una voce dal basso le disse: «Non ti rattristare: il tuo Dio ha fatto scorrere ai tuoi piedi un ruscello;
19:26 mangiane e bevine e stai serena.

19:16 Kitapta Meryem’i de an! Hani o, ailesinden ayrılarak doğu tarafında inzivaya çekilmişti.
19:17 Sonra onlarla kendi arasında bir perde germişti. Derken biz ona ruhumuzu (Cebrâil’i) gönderdik. Ona tam bir insan suretinde göründü.
19:18 Meryem: “Senden Rahman’a sığınırım, eğer takvâ sahibi bir kimse isen” dedi.
İnsanlardan birini görecek olursan; “Şüphesiz ben Rahmân’a susmayı adadım. Bugün hiçbir insan ile konuşmayacağım.” de!

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

19:32 32. Ir būti pareigingu savo motinai, ir nepadarė manęs išpuikėliu, ne nepalaimintu.
19:33 33. Ir Salam (taika) man tą dieną, kai aš gimiau, ir tą dieną, kai aš mirsiu, ir tą dieną, kai būsiu prikeltas gyvas!“
19:27 Isa baadhattee gara ummata ishee dhufte, (Isaan) ni jedhan: “Yaa Maryam! Dhugumatti ati (ilmoo abbaa malee fiduun) waan akkaan hamtuu hojjatte.
19:28 Yaa obboleettii Haaruun! Abbaan kee nama badaa hin turre; haati teetis sagaagaltuu hin turre.” [9]
19:29 (Isiin) gara isaatti akeekte, (Isaan) nijedhan “Akkamitti daaima siree daa’imummaa keessa jiru dubbifna?”.
19:30 (iisaan nidubbatee) ni jedhe: “ ani gabricha Rabbiiti, Inni kitaaba (injiil) naaf kenne; nabiyyiis na taasisee jira.
19:31 Essallee jiraadhu barakeeffamaa na taasisee jira; salaataa (gadidhaabuu)fi zakaa (baasu)ttis na ajaje hangan lubbuun jiru.

19:33 Nageenyi narratti jiraata Guyyaa ani dhaladhe, guyyaa (umriin kiyya dhumee) ani du’uufi guyyaa (qiyaamaa) ani kaafamuus”. [10]
19:27 Basi akaenda naye (mwanawe) kwa jamaa zake amembeba. Wakasema: Ewe Maryamu! Hakika umeleta kitu cha ajabu sana!
19:28 Ewe dada yake Harun! Baba yako hakuwa mtu mbaya, wala mama yako hakuwa kahaba.

Wahrlich, Allah versorgt, wen Er will, ohne Berechnung.“

3:35 Aliposema mke wa Imran: Mola wangu Mlezi! Hakika mimi, nimekuwekea nadhiri kilicho katika tumbo langu la uzazi awe mtumishi wako, basi nikubalie. Hakika, Wewe ndiye Mwenye kusikia, Mwenye kujua.
3:36 Basi alipomzaa, akasema: Mola wangu Mlezi!

Thereupon Zechariah prayed to his Lord; he said, "My Lord, bestow on me good offspring from Your presence; You are the Hearer of Prayers."

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it7 of the 8 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:42-43, 19:16-26, 19:27-33, 66:12, 3:35-37, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study, except at 19:28, 3:35 and 66:12, which were read in all five translations for the name the people give her at 19:28.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - mary + daughter + of + imran; o + mary + god + hath + chosen + thee; shake + the + trunk + of + the + palm-tree; how + can + i + have + a + son + when + no + mortal + hath + touched + me. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
For the name at 19:28, two more searches were run across all five translations. The words sister of Aaron are printed at one verse only, 19:28, in all five. The name Imran is printed at three verses: 3:35 and 66:12, which this study already carries, and one verse naming the family of Imran among those God chose, which does not name Mary and is not carried. No verse was added, because 19:28, 3:35 and 66:12 were already in the set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: the verse where she asks how she can have a child when no man has touched her - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the virgin birth of Jesus?, where the conception is the subject.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Nor does it set the names at 19:28, 3:35 and 66:12 beside other writings. That comparison is history, which this study does not make.
