And lower to them the wing of humility, out of mercy, and say, "My Lord, have mercy on them, as they raised me when I was a child."
What is the Qur'an's prayer for one's parents?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 17:24 And lower unto them the wing of submission through mercy, and say: MY LORD! HAVE MERCY ON THEM BOTH AS THEY DID CARE FOR ME WHEN I WAS LITTLE. This is here because it is the one place the text hands the reader a prayer for parents in so many words, and because the reason it gives is a memory. The verse before it, 17:23, is in What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?
- 02 14:41 OUR LORD! FORGIVE ME AND MY PARENTS AND BELIEVERS on the day when the account is cast. This is here because it is Abraham's, and because it widens past the family in the same breath. ALSO CARRIED by What is Abraham's prayer for his descendants and for a city of peace?
- 03 71:28 MY LORD! FORGIVE ME AND MY PARENTS AND HIM WHO ENTERETH MY HOUSE BELIEVING, and believing men and believing women. This is here because it is Noah's, and because it widens differently - by household and then by whole categories of people.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Three prayers, and the first of them is the only place in the book where a reader is handed words to say about their own parents.
17:24 gives the instruction and then the words: lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy, AND SAY - MY LORD, HAVE MERCY ON THEM BOTH AS THEY CARED FOR ME WHEN I WAS LITTLE.
The reason offered is a memory, and a specific kind of memory: not their virtue, not their piety, but the care they gave a child who could not reciprocate it. The prayer asks God to do for them something structurally like what they did for you. It is a small, exact piece of reasoning and it sits in the middle of the passage the study What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents? is built from.
The other two are prophets' prayers, and both do the same thing: they start with the parents and immediately go wider.
Abraham, at 14:41, ends his long prayer with: forgive me AND MY PARENTS AND THE BELIEVERS, on the day the account is cast. Noah, at 71:28, prays: forgive me and my parents AND WHOEVER ENTERS MY HOUSE A BELIEVER, and the believing men and the believing women.
So in both cases the parents are named first and then the circle opens - to a household in one, to everyone who believes in the other. Neither prayer stops at the family.
Read together the three give a small pattern: the parents are prayed for by name; the ground for it is what they did rather than what they were; and the prayer does not end with them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 17:24, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

If You leave them, they will mislead your servants, and will breed only wicked unbelievers.
If Thou shouldst leave them, they will mislead Thy slaves and will beget none save lewd ingrates
Verily, Thou, if Thou shouldst leave them, they will lead astray Thy servants, and they will only bear for children sinners and misbelievers
For if thou leave them they will beguile thy servants and will beget only sinners, infidels
For if thou leave them, they will seduce thy servants, and will beget none but a wicked and unbelieving offspring
71:28 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it8 of the 9 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 17:24, 14:41, 71:28, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 6 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. This study has been read against him at every anchor, on 9 September 2026, and nothing in it is withdrawn: 17:24 hands the reader the words in all five, the ground it offers is a memory of childhood care in all five, 14:41 widens from the parents to the believers in all five, and 71:28 widens by household and then by category in all five. Itani enters as a fifth voice and is nowhere promoted to the reading that settles a word.
One claim in this study is not of a kind a fifth rendering can touch, and it is named here rather than left to look unchecked. The synthesis says 17:24 is the only place in the book where a reader is handed words to say about their own parents. That is a statement about WHICH VERSES EXIST, not about how any of them is rendered, so adding a fifth English translation can neither create nor remove the case that would refute it. It stands as it was signed, on the reading that established it, and this restatement does not claim to have re-checked the corpus for it.
What the fifth rendering adds. At 17:24 the renderings part on the word for the care remembered - raised in Itani, brought up in Palmer, did care for in Pickthall, reared in Rodwell, nursed in Sale - and on the quality asked of the child, which is humility in Itani and Palmer, submission in Pickthall, tenderness in Rodwell and tender affection in Sale. The claim the synthesis rests on is that the ground offered is the care itself rather than the parents' virtue or piety, and that is what every one of the five says. At 71:28 Itani writes anyone who enters my home in faith where Pickthall has him who entereth my house believing; Palmer alone writes my two parents. None of this moves the finding.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No probe was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every reference in that set was rendered from the real text before use and checked against the claim made for it; a reference whose rendered text did not carry that claim was dropped, not forced. THERE IS THEREFORE NO PROBE TO RE-RUN OVER FIVE, and the verse set is exactly the set signed on 6 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them. NO BAND OR SCORE IS QUOTED IN THIS BASIS, and none is added here: the version signed when four translations were cleared published no figure, so there is no four-based figure to restate over five.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 17:24, the reason said another study carries this verse, which it does not; it now names the verse that study carries. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
