When Abraham said, "O My Lord, make this a peaceful land, and provide its people with fruits-whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day." He said, "And whoever disbelieves, I will give him a little enjoyment, then I will consign him to the punishment of the Fire; how miserable the destiny!"
What is Abraham's prayer for his descendants and for a city of peace?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:126–129 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is one continuous prayer at the raising of the House and its parts answer each other: MAKE THIS A REGION OF SECURITY and bestow fruits upon its people - and God answers mid-prayer, granting it even to the disbeliever for a while - then, as they raise the foundations, OUR LORD! ACCEPT FROM US - then make us submissive and show us our ways of worship - then RAISE UP IN THEIR MIDST A MESSENGER FROM AMONG THEM. Carried whole because the request moves from the city to the family to a future generation, and because God's answer is inside it.
- 02 14:35–37 In as ONE PASSAGE because the three verses are one prayer: MAKE SAFE THIS TERRITORY, and preserve me and my sons FROM SERVING IDOLS - lo, they have led many astray - our Lord, I HAVE SETTLED SOME OF MY POSTERITY IN AN UNCULTIVABLE VALLEY near unto Thy holy House, that they may establish worship. Carried because it gives the same two requests, security and faithfulness, with the geography stated plainly.
- 03 14:38–41 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the prayer's continuation and close: Thou knowest what we hide and what we proclaim - PRAISE BE TO ALLAH WHO HATH GIVEN ME, IN MY OLD AGE, ISHMAEL AND ISAAC - my Lord, make me to establish worship, and some of my posterity - OUR LORD, FORGIVE ME AND MY PARENTS AND BELIEVERS on the day when the account is cast. Carried because the prayer turns to thanks in the middle and ends by widening past his own family. 14:41 ALSO CARRIED by What is the Qur'an's prayer for one's parents?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
It is the longest sustained prayer in the book attributed to one person, and it is almost entirely about other people.
Two things are asked for, and they are asked in both places. SECURITY for a place - make this a region of security, make safe this territory. And FAITHFULNESS for a line - preserve me and my sons from serving idols, make us submissive to Thee, raise up among them a messenger.
What is not asked for is anything for himself. The nearest he comes is in 14:40 - make me one who establishes prayer - and even that is immediately extended to his descendants.
Three details reward attention.
In 2:126 God answers INSIDE the prayer. Abraham asks that the city's provision go to those of its people who believe, and the reply comes back that the disbeliever too will be given enjoyment for a while before being driven to the Fire. The request is granted and simultaneously widened past the limit he set on it.
In 14:37 the geography is stated without softening: I have settled some of my posterity in AN UNCULTIVABLE VALLEY near Thy holy House. He is not describing a promising place. The prayer is made over barren ground.
And in 14:39 the prayer breaks off into thanks: PRAISE BE TO GOD WHO HAS GIVEN ME, IN MY OLD AGE, ISHMAEL AND ISAAC. The petition pauses to acknowledge what has already been given before returning to ask for more.
It closes, at 14:41, by widening once more - forgive me, and my parents, AND THE BELIEVERS, on the day the account is cast. The prayer that began with one city and one family ends by including everyone.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:126–129, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And when Abraham prayed: My Lord! Make this a region of security and bestow upon its people fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day, He answered: As for him who disbelieveth, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the doom of Fire - a hapless journey's end
When Abraham said, 'Lord, make this a town of safety, and provide the dwellers there with fruits, such as believe in God and the last day!' (God) said, ' And he who misbelieves, I will give him but little to enjoy, then will drive him to the torment of the fire, an evil journey will it be
And when Abraham said, "Lord! make this secure land, and supply its people with fruits, such of them as believe in God and in the last day:" He said, "And whoso believeth not, for a little while will I bestow good things on him; then will I drive him to the torment of the Fire!" An ill passage
And when Abraham said, Lord, make this a territory of security, and bounteously bestow fruits on its inhabitants, such of them as believe in God and the last day; God answered, and whoever believeth not, I will bestow on him little, afterwards I will drive him to the punishment of hellfire; an ill journey shall it be

Tukubalie! Hakika Wewe ndiye Mwenye kusikia mno, Mwenye kujua zaidi.
2:128 Ewe Mola Mlezi wetu!

Our Lord! Lo! I have settled some of my posterity in an uncultivable valley near unto Thy holy House, our Lord! that they may establish proper worship; so incline some hearts of men that they may yearn toward them, and provide Thou them with fruits in order that they may be thankful
O our Lord! verily, I have made some of my seed dwell in a valley without corn, by thy Sacred House. O our Lord! let them be steadfast in prayer and make the hearts of men yearn towards them, and provide them with fruits, haply they may give thanks
O our Lord! verily I have settled some of my offspring in an unfruitful valley, nigh to thy holy house; O our Lord, that they may strictly observe prayer! Make thou therefore the hearts of men to yearn toward them, and supply them with fruits that they may be thankful
O Lord, I have caused some of my offspring to settle in an unfruitful valley, near thy holy house, O Lord, that they may be constant at prayer.

And He has given you something of all what you asked. And if you were to count God's blessings, you would not be able to enumerate them. The human being is unfair and ungrateful.
And He giveth you of all ye ask of Him, and if ye would count the bounty of Allah ye cannot reckon it. Lo! man is verily a wrong-doer, an ingrate
and brought you of everything ye asked Him: but if ye try to number God's favours, ye cannot count them;- verily, man is very unjust and ungrateful
of everything which ye ask Him, giveth He to you; and if ye would reckon up the favours of God, ye cannot count them! Surely man is unjust, ungrateful
He giveth you of every thing which ye ask him; and of ye attempt to reckon up the favours of God, ye shall not be able to compute the same. Surely man is unjust and ungrateful

Deem not that Allah is unaware of what the wicked do. He but giveth them a respite till a day when eyes will stare (in terror)
So think not God careless of what the unjust do; He only respites them until the day on which all eyes shall stare
Think thou not that God is regardless of the deeds of the wicked. He only respiteth them to the day on which all eyes shall stare up with terror
Think not, O prophet, that God is regardless of what the ungodly do. He only deferreth their punishment unto the day whereon mens eyes shall be fixed

The translators word this verse differently
Their necks outstretched, their heads upraised, their gaze unblinking, their hearts void.
As they come hurrying on in fear, their heads upraised, their gaze returning not to them, and their hearts as air
Hurrying on, raising up their heads, with their looks not turned back to them, and their hearts void
They hasten forward in fear; their heads upraised in supplication; their looks riveted; and their hearts a blank. Warn men therefore of the day when the punishment shall overtake them
They shall hasten forward, at the voice of the angel calling to judgment, and shall lift up their heads; they shall not be able to turn their sight from the object whereon it shall be fixed, and their hearts shall be void of sense, through excessive terror
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:126-129, 14:35-37, 14:38-41, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 6 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. This study has been read against him at every anchor, on 9 September 2026, and nothing in it is withdrawn: security for a place and faithfulness for a line are both asked in all five, God answers inside the prayer at 2:126 in all five, 14:37 states the ground as barren in all five, 14:39 breaks into thanks in all five, and 14:40's single self-directed request is extended to his descendants in all five. Itani enters as a fifth voice and is nowhere promoted to the reading that settles a word.
What the fifth rendering adds. At 14:37 the renderings part on the word for the ground - a valley of no vegetation in Itani, without corn in Palmer, uncultivable in Pickthall, unfruitful in Rodwell and Sale. Every one of them states it as barren, which is what the finding rests on. One claim in this study is not of a kind a fifth rendering can touch and is named here rather than left to look unchecked: that this is the longest sustained prayer in the book attributed to one person is a statement about WHICH VERSES EXIST, so adding a fifth English translation can neither create nor remove the case that would refute it. It stands as it was signed, and this restatement does not claim to have re-checked the corpus for it.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No probe was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every reference in that set was rendered from the real text before use and checked against the claim made for it; a reference whose rendered text did not carry that claim was dropped, not forced. THERE IS THEREFORE NO PROBE TO RE-RUN OVER FIVE, and the verse set is exactly the set signed on 6 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them. NO BAND OR SCORE IS QUOTED IN THIS BASIS, and none is added here: the version signed when four translations were cleared published no figure, so there is no four-based figure to restate over five.
