Muhammad is no more than a messenger. Messengers have passed on before him. If he dies or gets killed, will you turn on your heels? He who turns on his heels will not harm God in any way. And God will reward the appreciative.
What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet Muhammad?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:144 Muhammad is no more than a messenger; messengers have passed away before him - and if he died or were slain, would you turn back? In because it is the set's plainest statement of what he is not.
- 02 33:40 He is not the father of any man among you, but the messenger of God and the seal of the prophets. In because it is the one verse here that gives him a title of his own.
- 03 47:2 Those who believe and work righteousness and believe in what was sent down to Muhammad - He will remove their ill deeds. In because the naming is incidental to a promise made to others.
- 04 48:29 Muhammad is the messenger of God, and those with him are described - fierce against the unbelievers, compassionate among themselves, bowing and prostrating. In because it is the only verse in the set that describes his companions rather than him.
- 05 61:6 Jesus announces a messenger to come after him whose name is Ahmad. In because it is the only verse in the set where the name is given by someone else, and the only one carrying the other name.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The name occurs rarely, and where it occurs the verses are mostly about limits.
3:144 is the plainest: Muhammad is no more than a messenger; messengers have passed away before him - and asks whether, if he died or were slain, they would turn back on their heels. 33:40 gives the one title of his own: not the father of any man among you, but the messenger of God and the seal of the prophets.
In 47:2 the naming is almost incidental - the promise is made to those who believe in what was sent down to him. 48:29 describes not him but those with him: fierce against the unbelievers, compassionate among themselves, bowing and prostrating.
61:6 is the one place the name is given by someone else, and the one place it is a different name: Jesus announcing a messenger to come after him whose name is Ahmad.
One thing about this study is worth stating plainly, because it changes how the set should be read. Three further verses were dropped where the translators supplied the name over a pronoun - Sale writing O Mohammed, Pickthall bracketing (O Muhammad) - while Palmer has no name at all. Those are the translators speaking, not the text, and they are not in this study.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: no source has cleared the rights audit. It does not report how any commentator has read them: no has cleared it either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no cleared English edition exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading, because that layer is not built. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:144, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

There is no blame on the Prophet regarding what God has ordained for him. Such is the pattern of God among those who passed before. The command of God is an absolute decree.
There is no reproach for the Prophet in that which Allah maketh his due. That was Allah's way with those who passed away of old - and the commandment of Allah is certain destiny
There is no hindrance to the prophet about what God has ordained for him;-(such was) the course of God with those who have passed away before,- and God's bidding is a decreed decree
No blame attacheth to the prophet where God hath given him a permission. Such was the way of God with those prophets who flourished before thee; for God's behest is a fixed decree
No crime is to be charged on the prophet, as to what God hath allowed him, conformable to the ordinance of God with regard to those who preceded him, -- for the command of God is a determinate decree

When you encounter those who disbelieve, strike at their necks. Then, when you have routed them, bind them firmly. Then, either release them by grace, or by ransom, until war lays down its burdens. Had God willed, He could have defeated them Himself, but He thus tests some of you by means of others. As for those who are killed in the way of God, He will not let their deeds go to waste.
Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain
And when ye meet those who misbelieve - then striking off heads until ye have massacred them, and bind fast the bonds! Then either a free grant (of liberty) or a ransom until the war shall have laid down its burdens. That!- but if God please He would conquer them - but (it is) that He may try some of you by the others. And those who are slain in God's cause, their works shall not go wrong
When ye encounter the infidels, strike off their heads till ye have made a great slaughter among them, and of the rest make fast the fetters. And afterwards let there either be free dismissals or ransomings, till the war hath laid down its burdens. Thus do. Were such the pleasure of God, he could himself take vengeance upon them: but He would rather prove the one of you by the other. And whoso fight for the cause of God, their works he will not suffer to miscarry
When ye encounter the unbelievers, strike off their heads, until ye have made a great slaughter among them; and bind them in bonds: And either give them a free dismission afterwards, or exact a ransom; until the war shall have laid down its arms. This shall ye do: Verily if God pleased, He could take vengeance on them, without your assistance; but He commandeth you to fight his battles, that He may prove the one of you by the other. And as to those who fight in defence of God's true religion, God will not suffer their works to perish

This is their picture in the Law, and their picture in the Evangel: they are as the seed which putteth forth its stalk; then strengtheneth it, and it groweth stout, and riseth upon its stem, rejoicing the husbandman - that the infidels may be wrathful at them.

God has fulfilled His Messenger's vision in truth: "You will enter the Sacred Mosque, God willing, in security, heads shaven, or hair cut short, not fearing. He knew what you did not know, and has granted besides that an imminent victory."
Allah hath fulfilled the vision for His messenger in very truth. Ye shall indeed enter the Inviolable Place of Worship, if Allah will, secure, (having your hair) shaven and cut, not fearing. But He knoweth that which ye know not, and hath given you a near victory beforehand
God truly verified for His Apostle the vision that ye shall verity enter the Sacred Mosque, if God please, in safety with shaven heads or cut hair, ye shall not fear; for He knows what ye know not, and He has set for you, beside that, a victory nigh at hand

Kujto edhe kur Isai, i biri i Merjemes, tha: "O bij të Israilit, unë jam i dërguari i Allahut për ju.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:144, 33:40, 47:2, 48:29, 61:6, in full, and nothing else. No , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography was consulted, because none has cleared the rights audit. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a word search using a declared SYNONYM SET rather than a single term, because the four translators render this word differently and no single spelling reaches three of four. Verses proposed for removal and confirmed out: 15:85 - Matched only because Sale, Rodwell and Pickthall INSERT the name. Sale has 'O Mohammed', Pickthall '(O Muhammad)' in brackets; Palmer has no name at all. The Arabic carries a second-person address, not the name.; 30:60 - The same interpolation. Sale 'O Mohammed', Rodwell 'do thou, Muhammad'; Palmer has none. The verse addresses him without naming him.; 36:69 - The same again - Rodwell 'him (Muhammad)', Pickthall 'him (Muhammad)' in brackets; Palmer has only 'him'. The name is the translators' gloss on a pronoun. Three further verses were dropped because the name appears in them only as a translator's interpolation over a pronoun - Sale, Rodwell and Pickthall supply it while Palmer has no name at all. Those are the translators speaking rather than the text. Why each passage is in the study is stated per passage, and is signed with this prose.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
