God did not place two hearts inside any man's body. Nor did He make your wives whom you equate with your mothers, your actual mothers. Nor did He make your adopted sons, your actual sons. These are your words coming out of your mouths. God speaks the truth, and guides to the path.
What does the Qur'an say about adoption and lineage?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 33:4–5 God hath not assigned unto any man two hearts within his body... NOR HATH HE MADE THOSE WHOM YE CLAIM TO BE YOUR SONS YOUR SONS. This is but a saying of your mouths. But God saith the truth and He showeth the way. PROCLAIM THEIR REAL PARENTAGE. That will be more equitable in the sight of God. AND IF YE KNOW NOT THEIR FATHERS, THEN THEY ARE YOUR BRETHREN IN THE FAITH, AND YOUR CLIENTS. In as ONE PASSAGE because the abolition of the fiction and the provision for the child whose father is unknown are consecutive. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about a child's lineage and naming?, with a different reason there.
- 02 33:37 And when thou saidst unto him ON WHOM GOD HATH CONFERRED FAVOUR AND THOU HAST CONFERRED FAVOUR: keep thy wife to thyself, and fear God. And thou didst hide in thy mind that which God was to bring to light, and thou didst fear mankind whereas God had a better right that thou shouldst fear Him. So when Zeyd had performed the necessary formality of divorce from her, WE GAVE HER UNTO THEE IN MARRIAGE, SO THAT THERE MAY BE NO SIN FOR BELIEVERS IN RESPECT OF WIVES OF THEIR ADOPTED SONS. In because it names the one adopted son named in the Qur'an and states the purpose of the episode - removing a prohibition that rested on the fiction.
- 03 33:40 Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets. In because it closes the passage by applying the principle to the Prophet. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does 'the seal of the prophets' mean? and the study What does the Qur'an say about a child's lineage and naming?, with different reasons there.
- 04 4:36 Show kindness unto parents, and unto near kindred, and orphans, and the needy, and unto the neighbour who is of kin and the neighbour who is not of kin, AND THE COMPANION BY YOUR SIDE, and the wayfarer, and those whom your right hands possess. In because the duties of care it lists are not conditioned on descent, which is the other half of the picture. ALSO CARRIED by four other studies, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an abolishes a legal fiction and keeps the duty of care. Both halves are needed or the passage is misread.
33:4 removes the fiction: GOD HATH NOT MADE THOSE WHOM YE CLAIM TO BE YOUR SONS YOUR SONS. THIS IS BUT A SAYING OF YOUR MOUTHS. Declaring someone your son does not make him one, and the practice is described as speech rather than fact.
33:5 gives the instruction and its reason: PROCLAIM THEIR REAL PARENTAGE - THAT WILL BE MORE EQUITABLE. On the ordinary reading, equity here concerns inheritance, marriage prohibitions and knowing one's kin.
And then, immediately, the clause that prevents this from stranding anyone: IF YE KNOW NOT THEIR FATHERS, THEN THEY ARE YOUR BRETHREN IN THE FAITH, AND YOUR CLIENTS. A child of unknown descent is given a name for the relationship - brother, ward - without a false paternity.
33:37 is the episode. It names Zeyd, the only adopted son named in the Qur'an, and states the purpose of what happened: SO THAT THERE MAY BE NO SIN FOR BELIEVERS IN RESPECT OF WIVES OF THEIR ADOPTED SONS. A prohibition that depended on the fiction is removed with it.
What is NOT abolished is the care. 4:36's list of people owed kindness runs through parents, kin, orphans, the needy, both kinds of neighbour, THE COMPANION BY YOUR SIDE, the traveller and those in one's household - and not one of those duties is conditioned on descent.
So: raise the child, feed the child, be responsible for the child - and do not pretend the child is yours by blood. That is the distinction the passage draws, and modern legal arrangements are assessed against it by jurists, not by this platform.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 33:4–5, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Proclaim their real parentage. That will be more equitable in the sight of Allah. And if ye know not their fathers, then (they are) your brethren in the faith, and your clients. Call them by their fathers' names; that is more just in God's sight; but if ye know not their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and your clients. Name them after their fathers: this will be more right before God. But if ye know not who their fathers are, then let them be your brethren in the faith, and your comrades. And unless made with intent of heart, mistakes in this matter shall be no crime in you: for God is Lenient, Merciful
Call such as are adopted, the sons of their natural fathers: This will be more just in the sight of God. And if ye know not their fathers, let them be as your brethren in religion, and your companions: And it shall be no crime in you, that ye err in this matter; but that shall be criminal which your hearts purposely design; for God is gracious and merciful

33:4 4. Allahas nesukūrė nė vienam žmogui dviejų širdžių jo kūne. Nei Jis padarė jūsų žmonas, kurias jūs skelbiate esančias kaip jūsų motinos nugaras, jūsų tikromis motinomis [Az-Zihar yra vyro sakymas savo žmonai: „Esi man kaip mano motinos nugara“, t. y. nėra leistina man prie tavęs prisiartinti], nei Jis padarė jūsų įsūnius jūsų tikrais sūnumis. Tai tik jūsų žodžiai iš jūsų burnų. Tačiau Allahas sako tiesą, ir Jis veda į (Teisingą) Kelią.

The Prophet is more caring of the believers than they are of themselves, and his wives are mothers to them. And blood-relatives are closer to one another in God's Book than the believers or the emigrants, though you should do good to your friends. That is inscribed in the Book.
The Prophet is closer to the believers than their selves, and his wives are (as) their mothers. And the owners of kinship are closer one to another in the ordinance of Allah than (other) believers and the fugitives (who fled from Mecca), except that ye should do kindness to your friends. This is written in the Book (of nature)
The prophet is nearer of kin to the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers. And blood relations are nearer in kin to each other by the Book of God than the believers and those who fled; only your doing kindness to your kindred, that is traced in the Book
Nearer of kin to the faithful is the Prophet, than they are to their own selves. His wives are their mothers. According to the Book of God, they who are related by blood, are nearer the one to the other than other believers, and than those who have fled their country for the cause of God: but whatever kindness ye shew to your kindred, shall be noted down in the Book
The prophet is nigher unto the true believers than their own souls; and his wives are their mothers. Those who are related by consanguinity are nigher of kin the one of them unto the others, according to the book of God, than the other true believers, and the Mohajerun: Unless that ye do what is fitting and reasonable to your relations in general. This is written in the book of God

When you said to him whom God had blessed, and you had favored, "Keep your wife to yourself, and fear God." But you hid within yourself what God was to reveal. And you feared the people, but it was God you were supposed to fear. Then, when Zaid ended his relationship with her, We gave her to you in marriage, that there may be no restriction for believers regarding the wives of their adopted sons, when their relationship has ended. The command of God was fulfilled.

And when thou saidst unto him on whom Allah hath conferred favour and thou hast conferred favour: Keep thy wife to thyself, and fear Allah. And thou didst hide in thy mind that which Allah was to bring to light, and thou didst fear mankind whereas Allah hath a better right that thou shouldst fear Him. So when Zeyd had performed that necessary formality (of divorce) from her, We gave her unto thee in marriage, so that (henceforth) there may be no sin for believers in respect of wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have performed the necessary formality (of release) from them. The commandment of Allah must be fulfilled
And when thou didst say to him God had shown favour to and thou hadst shown favour to, 'Keep thy wife to thyself and fear God;' and thou didst conceal in thy soul what God was about to display; and didst fear men, though God is more deserving that thou shouldst fear Him; and when Zaid had fulfilled his desire of her we did wed thee to her that there should be no hindrance to the believers in the matter of the wives of their adopted sons when they have fulfilled their desire of them: and so God's bidding to be done
And, remember, when thou saidst to him unto whom God had shewn favour, and to whom thou also hadst shewn favour, "Keep thy wife to thyself, and fear God;" and thou didst hide in thy mind what God would bring to light. and thou didst fear man; but more right had it been to fear God. And when Zaid had settled concerning her to divorce her, we married her to thee, that it might not be a crime in the faithful to marry the wives of their adopted sons, when they have settled the affair concerning them. And the behest of God is to be performed
And remember when thou saidst to him unto whom God had been gracious, and on whom thou also hadst conferred favours, keep thy wife to thy self, and fear God: And thou didst conceal that in thy mind which God had determined to discover, and didst fear men; whereas it was more just that thou shouldst fear God. But when Zeid had determined the matter concerning her, and had resolved to divorce her, we joined her in marriage unto thee; lest a crime should be charged on the true believers, in marrying the wives of their adopted sons, when they have determined the matter concerning them: And the command of God is to be performed

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as God has given some of them an advantage over others, and because they spend out of their wealth. The good women are obedient, guarding what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them, and abandon them in their beds, then strike them. But if they obey you, seek no way against them. God is Sublime, Great.
Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great
Men stand superior to women in that God hath preferred some of them over others, and in that they expend of their wealth: and the virtuous women, devoted, careful (in their husbands') absence, as God has cared for them. But those whose perverseness ye fear, admonish them and remove them into bed-chambers and beat them; but if they submit to you, then do not seek a way against them; verily, God is high and great
Men are superior to women on account of the qualities with which God hath gifted the one above the other, and on account of the outlay they make from their substance for them. Virtuous women are obedient, careful, during the husband's absence, because God hath of them been careful. But chide those for whose refractoriness ye have cause to fear; remove them into beds apart, and scourage them: but if they are obedient to you, then seek not occasion against them: verily, God is High, Great
Men shall have the pre-eminence above women, because of those advantages wherein God hath caused the one of them to excel the other, and for that which they expend of their substance in maintaining their wives. The honest women are obedient, careful in the absence of their husbands, for that God preserveth them, by committing them to the care and protection of the men. But those, whose perverseness ye shall be apprehensive of, rebuke; and remove them into separate apartments, and chastise them. But if they shall be obedient unto you, seek not an occasion of quarrel against them; for God is high and great

If you fear a breach between the two, appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family. If they wish to reconcile, God will bring them together. God is Knowledgeable, Expert.
And if ye fear a breach between them twain (the man and wife), appoint an arbiter from his folk and an arbiter from her folk. If they desire amendment Allah will make them of one mind. Lo! Allah is ever Knower, Aware
And if ye fear a breach between the two, then send a judge from his people and a judge from her people. If they wish for reconciliation, God will arrange between them; verily, God is knowing and aware
And if ye fear a breach between man and wife, then send a judge chosen from his family, and a judge chosen from her family: if they are desirous of agreement, God will effect a reconciliation between them; verily, God is knowing, apprised of all
And if ye fear a breach between the husband and wife, send a judge out of his family, and a judge out of her family: If they shall desire a reconciliation, God will cause them to agree; for God is knowing and wise

Those who are stingy, and exhort people to stinginess, and conceal what God has given them from His bounty. We have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful punishment.

who are miserly and bid men be miserly too, and who hide what God has given them of His grace;- but we have prepared for the misbelievers shameful woe
Who are niggardly themselves, and bid others be niggards, and hide away what God of his bounty hath given them. We have made ready a shameful chastisement for the unbelievers

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 33:4-5, 33:37, 33:40, 4:36, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - hath + not + made + those + whom + ye + claim + to + be + your + sons; proclaim + their + real + parentage; your + brethren + in + the + faith; adopted + sons; zeyd. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 9:23 - about loyalty; also left out of What does the Qur'an say about a child's lineage and naming?; 43:16 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about favouring sons over daughters?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
