Muhammad is not the father of any of your men; but he is the Messenger of God, and the seal of the prophets. God is Cognizant of everything.
What does 'the seal of the prophets' mean?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 33:40 MUHAMMAD IS NOT THE FATHER OF ANY MAN AMONG YOU, BUT HE IS THE MESSENGER OF GOD AND THE SEAL OF THE PROPHETS. And God is Aware of all things. In because it is the only verse containing the phrase, and because its first clause - about fatherhood - is the context the phrase actually sits in and is almost never quoted with it.
- 02 4:163–165 Lo, We inspired thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him... MESSENGERS OF GOOD CHEER AND OF WARNING, IN ORDER THAT MANKIND MIGHT HAVE NO ARGUMENT AGAINST GOD AFTER THE MESSENGERS. In as ONE PASSAGE because it states what the succession of prophets was FOR, which is the frame any claim of finality has to sit in.
- 03 7:35 O Children of Adam, WHEN MESSENGERS OF YOUR OWN COME UNTO YOU who narrate unto you My revelations, then whosoever refraineth from evil and amendeth - there shall no fear come upon them. In because it is phrased conditionally and generally, which is the kind of verse a reader should weigh against a claim of finality.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The phrase occurs once, and the verse it occurs in is about something else.
33:40: MUHAMMAD IS NOT THE FATHER OF ANY MAN AMONG YOU, BUT HE IS THE MESSENGER OF GOD AND THE SEAL OF THE PROPHETS.
The first clause is doing work that a reader coming for the second clause will miss. It is a denial of paternity - and it sits in a passage about the marriage the preceding verses describe, in which the question of adopted sons and their status is at issue. The seal phrase arrives attached to a statement about who is and is not his son.
What does SEAL mean? The translators use the same English word, seal. Whether it means the last, or the confirming impress, or both, is not settled by the verse, and no other verse uses the phrase.
That is the whole textual base, and a reader is entitled to know how narrow it is before meeting the enormous doctrinal structure built on it.
Two verses are carried to give the frame. 4:165 says messengers were sent SO THAT MANKIND MIGHT HAVE NO ARGUMENT AGAINST GOD AFTER THE MESSENGERS - a purpose which a final messenger would complete. And 7:35 states the arrangement conditionally and in general terms, addressed to the children of Adam.
The tradition's reading of 33:40 as establishing finality is not arbitrary; it is an old and near-universal reading. But it is a reading, and this study can show the verse and its context and cannot adjudicate it - no has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 33:40, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

There is no blame on the Prophet regarding what God has ordained for him. Such is the pattern of God among those who passed before. The command of God is an absolute decree.
There is no reproach for the Prophet in that which Allah maketh his due. That was Allah's way with those who passed away of old - and the commandment of Allah is certain destiny
There is no hindrance to the prophet about what God has ordained for him;-(such was) the course of God with those who have passed away before,- and God's bidding is a decreed decree

4:163 In verità ti abbiamo ispirato, come abbiamo ispirato Nūħ, i profeti dopo di lui, e come abbiamo ispirato Ibrāhīm ، Isma’īl, Is-ħaq, Ya’qub, le Tribù[45], ‘Īsa, Æyyūb, Yūnus, Hārūn, e Suleymēn. E demmo a Dāwūd i Salmi[46] Al-Zabūr
4:164 ai Messaggeri, di cui ti abbiamo già raccontato, e ai Messaggeri di cui non ti abbiamo raccontato nulla. E Allāh parlò a Mūsā a viva voce.

İbrahim’e, İsmail’e, İshak’a, Ya'kûb’a, torunlarına, İsâ’ya, Eyyûb’a, Yûnus’a, Hârûn’a ve Süleyman’a da vahyettik.

For every nation is an appointed time. When their time has come, they cannot delay it by one hour, nor can they advance it.
And every nation hath its term, and when its term cometh, they cannot put it off an hour nor yet advance (it)
Every nation has its appointed time, and when their appointed time comes they cannot keep it back an hour, nor can they bring it on
Every nation hath its set time. And when their time is come, they shall not retard it an hour; and they shall not advance it
Unto every nation there is a predixed term; therefore when their term is expired, they shall not have respite for an hour, neither shall they be anticipated

But as for those who reject Our revelations, and are too proud to accept them-these are the inmates of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
But they who deny Our revelations and scorn them - each are rightful owners of the Fire; they will abide therein
But those who say my signs are lies, and who are too big with pride for them, these are the fellows of the Fire, they shall dwell therein for aye
But they who charge our signs with falsehood, and turn away from them in their pride, shall be inmates of the fire: for ever shall they abide therein
But they who shall accuse our signs of falsehood, and shall proudly reject them, they shall be the companions of hell fire; they shall remain therein for ever

Who does greater wrong than he who invents lies about God, or denies His revelations? These-their share of the decree will reach them. Until, when Our envoys come to them, to take their souls away, they will say, "Where are they whom you used to pray to besides God?" They will say, "They have abandoned us," and they will testify against themselves that they were faithless.
Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah or denieth Our tokens. (For such) their appointed portion of the Book (of destiny) reacheth them till, when Our messengers come to gather them, they say: Where (now) is that to which ye cried beside Allah? They say: They have departed from us. And they testify against themselves that they were disbelievers
Who is more unjust than he who devises against God a lie, or says His signs are lies? These, their portion of the Book shall reach them, until when our messengers come to take their souls away, and say, 'Where is what ye used to call upon instead of God?' they say, 'They have strayed away from us;' and they shall bear witness against themselves that they have been misbelievers
And who is worse than he who deviseth a lie of God, or treateth our signs as lies? To them shall a portion here below be assigned in accordance with the Book of our decrees, until the time when our messengers, as they receive their souls, shall say, "Where are they on whom ye called beside God?" They shall say: "Gone from us." And they shall witness against themselves that they were infidels
And who is more unjust than he who deviseth a lie concerning God, or accuseth his signs of imposture? Unto these shall be given their portion of worldly happiness, according to what is written in the book of God's decrees, until our messengers come unto them, and shall cause them to die; saying, where are the idols which ye called upon, besides God? They shall answer, they have disappeared from us. And they shall bear witness against themselves, that they were unbelievers

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 33:40, 4:163-165, 7:35, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - seal + of + the + prophets; last + of + the + prophets; father + of + any + man + among + you. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:177 - matched incidentally; carried by several studies; 4:155 - a different sense of seal - carried by the study Does the Qur'an teach predestination or free will?; 4:162 - matched incidentally.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim about what the Arabic word for seal carries was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
