What does the Qur'an say about false accusation of adultery (qadhf)?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 24:4–5 And those who ACCUSE HONOURABLE WOMEN BUT BRING NOT FOUR WITNESSES - scourge them with EIGHTY STRIPES and NEVER AFTERWARD ACCEPT THEIR TESTIMONY - they indeed are evil-doers, save those who afterward repent and make amends. In as ONE PASSAGE because 24:5 is part of the ruling and reopens what 24:4 closes.
  2. 02 24:11–13 Lo, they who spread the slander are a gang among you... Why did the believers, men and women, when ye heard it, not think good of their own folk and say: it is a manifest untruth? WHY DID THEY NOT PRODUCE FOUR WITNESSES? Since they produce not witnesses, they verily are liars in the sight of God. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the episode the ruling came out of, and because it puts the burden of proof beyond doubt. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about verifying news before acting on it?, with a different reason there.
  3. 03 24:6–9 As for those who accuse their wives but have no witnesses except themselves - let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, swearing by God that he is of those who speak the truth... And it shall avert the punishment from her if she bear witness four times that he is of those who lie. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the one procedure the text gives where the two parties are husband and wife, and because the woman's oath is given the same weight and the same number as the man's.
  4. 04 4:15 As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, CALL TO WITNESS FOUR OF YOU AGAINST THEM. In because it is the earlier statement of the same evidentiary bar. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an command stoning for adultery?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

This is one of the places where the Qur'an is most specific, and the specifics run in an unexpected direction.

24:4 penalises the ACCUSER. Anyone who accuses a chaste woman and cannot produce four witnesses receives eighty lashes - and, permanently, THEIR TESTIMONY IS NEVER AGAIN ACCEPTED. That second penalty is the heavier one: a person disqualified as a witness for life.

Set that beside the hundred lashes prescribed at 24:2 for the offence itself - rendered by the study Does the Qur'an command stoning for adultery?, not on this page, and the arithmetic is striking. Eighty for the failed accusation against a hundred for the proven act, plus a lifetime disability the guilty party does not incur. Bringing the charge and failing is nearly as costly as the offence.

24:5 then reopens it: SAVE THOSE WHO AFTERWARD REPENT AND MAKE AMENDS. The pattern that appears at 5:39 for theft, a verse not rendered on this page, appears here too.

24:11-13 is the episode behind the ruling, and it supplies the standard directly: WHY DID THEY NOT PRODUCE FOUR WITNESSES? SINCE THEY PRODUCE NOT WITNESSES, THEY VERILY ARE LIARS IN THE SIGHT OF GOD. Absent the proof, the text does not record the matter as unproven; it names the accusers liars.

24:6-9 handles the case where the accuser is the husband and there are no other witnesses. He swears four times, and she may swear four times in return - AND HER OATH AVERTS THE PUNISHMENT FROM HER. The two testimonies are given equal number and equal effect.

That last point is worth setting beside the study Does the Qur'an say a woman is worth half a man?, which finds no general ratio of testimony in the text. Here, in the one procedure where a woman's word is set directly against a man's, they are equal.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 24:4–5, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Those who perpetrated the slander are a band of you. Do not consider it bad for you, but it is good for you. Each person among them bears his share in the sin. As for him who played the major role-for him is a terrible punishment.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Lo! they who spread the slander are a gang among you. Deem it not a bad thing for you; nay, it is good for you. Unto every man of them (will be paid) that which he hath earned of the sin; and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be an awful doom

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

Verily, those who bring forward the lie, a band of you,- reckon it not as an evil for you, nay, it is good for you; every man of them shall have what he has earned of sin; and he of them who managed to aggravate it, for him is mighty woe

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

Of a truth, they who advanced that lie were a large number of you; but regard it not as an evil to you. No, it is an advantage to you. To every man among them shall it be done according to the offence he hath committed; and as to that person among them who took on himself to aggravate it, a sore punishment doth await him

George Sale published 1734

As to the party among you who have published the falsehood concerning Ayesha, think it not to be an evil unto you: On the contrary, it is better for you. Every man of them shall be punished according to the injustice of which he hath been guilty; and he among them who hath undertaken to aggravate the same, shall suffer a grievous punishment

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 24:4-5, 24:11-13, 24:6-9, 4:15, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - accuse + honourable + women; four + witnesses; eighty + stripes; never + afterward + accept + their + testimony; accuse + their + wives. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
