O you who believe! If a troublemaker brings you any news, investigate, lest you harm people out of ignorance, and you become regretful for what you have done.
What does the Qur'an say about verifying news before acting on it?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 49:6 O ye who believe, IF AN EVIL-LIVER BRING YOU TIDINGS, VERIFY IT, lest ye smite some folk in ignorance and afterward repent of what ye did. In because it is the instruction, it names the risk - acting on a report and regretting it - and it is the only verse in the Qur'an that commands verification in so many words.
- 02 17:36 FOLLOW NOT THAT WHEREOF THOU HAST NO KNOWLEDGE. Lo, the hearing and the sight and the heart - OF EACH OF THESE IT WILL BE ASKED. In because it generalises the same duty and makes the faculties answerable for what they accepted. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about speaking about God without knowledge?, with a different reason there.
- 03 24:12–13 Why did not the believers, men and women, when ye heard it, THINK GOOD OF THEIR OWN FOLK, and say: it is a manifest untruth? Why did they not produce four witnesses? Since they produce not witnesses, they verily are liars in the sight of God. In as ONE PASSAGE because it applies the rule to a real episode and supplies two tests - a presumption in favour of the accused, and a demand for witnesses. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about false accusation of adultery (qadhf)?, with a different reason there.
- 04 49:12 Shun much suspicion, for some suspicion is a crime; and spy not, neither backbite one another. In because it is the verse immediately governing the same social ground and is carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about backbiting and slander? for the tongue - here it is the standing presumption that 49:6 interrupts. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from the studies What does the Qur'an say about suspicion and spying? and What does the Qur'an say about backbiting and slander?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse commands this, and it is worth quoting exactly because the usual paraphrase loses two things.
49:6: IF AN EVIL-LIVER BRING YOU TIDINGS, VERIFY IT - lest ye smite some folk in ignorance and afterward repent of what ye did.
The first thing usually lost is the condition. The verse does not say verify everything. It attaches the duty to the character of the source, and all four translators keep that: an evil-liver, a wicked person, a reprobate. The instruction is triggered by who is telling you.
The second is the consequence. The harm named is not being misinformed. It is SMITING SOME FOLK IN IGNORANCE and then regretting it. The verse is about acting, not about believing.
17:36 states the general form: do not follow what you have no knowledge of - and then makes the hearing, the sight and the heart each answerable for it. Responsibility is placed on the faculty that took the report in.
24:12-13 shows the rule applied to an actual accusation, and it adds two tests the abstract verses do not. First, a presumption: when you heard it, why did you not THINK GOOD OF YOUR OWN PEOPLE and say this is a manifest untruth? Second, a procedure: why did they not bring four witnesses? Absent the witnesses, the verse calls the reporters liars.
Together with 49:12 - shun much suspicion, spy not, do not backbite - these verses describe a whole sequence: do not assume, do not go looking, do not repeat, and if a report reaches you from an unreliable source, check it before you act.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 49:6, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The evil of all that is hateful in the sight of thy Lord
All this is ever evil in the sight of your Lord and abhorred
All this is evil; odious to thy Lord
All this is evil, and abominable in the sight of thy Lord

24:13 13. Kodėl jie nepateikė keturių liudininkų? Nes jie (šmeižikai) nepateikė liudytojų! Tada Allahui jie yra melagiai.
24:12 Maaliif yeroo isa (soba kana) dhageessan, mu’uminoonni dhiiraas ta’ee kan dubaraa, lubbuulee isaaniitiif (wal jiddutti) toltuu yaadanii “Kun soba ifa bahaadha” jechuu dhaban?
24:13 Maaliif isa irratti ragaalee afur fiduu dhaban? Eega ragootaan hin dhufin, isaan sun Allaah biratti isaanumaat sobdoota.

Those who perpetrated the slander are a band of you. Do not consider it bad for you, but it is good for you. Each person among them bears his share in the sin. As for him who played the major role-for him is a terrible punishment.
Lo! they who spread the slander are a gang among you. Deem it not a bad thing for you; nay, it is good for you. Unto every man of them (will be paid) that which he hath earned of the sin; and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be an awful doom
Verily, those who bring forward the lie, a band of you,- reckon it not as an evil for you, nay, it is good for you; every man of them shall have what he has earned of sin; and he of them who managed to aggravate it, for him is mighty woe
Of a truth, they who advanced that lie were a large number of you; but regard it not as an evil to you. No, it is an advantage to you. To every man among them shall it be done according to the offence he hath committed; and as to that person among them who took on himself to aggravate it, a sore punishment doth await him
As to the party among you who have published the falsehood concerning Ayesha, think it not to be an evil unto you: On the contrary, it is better for you. Every man of them shall be punished according to the injustice of which he hath been guilty; and he among them who hath undertaken to aggravate the same, shall suffer a grievous punishment

When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great
When ye reported it with your tongues, and spake with your mouths what ye had no knowledge of, and reckoned it a light thing, while in God's eyes it was grave

L’avete ripudiato. E temete Allāh, in verità Allāh è Perdonatore, Misericordioso.
12. O jūs, kurie tikite! Venkite įtarinėjimo. Iš tiesų, dalis įtarimų yra nuodėmė. Ir nešnipinėkite, ir neapkalbinėkite vienas kito. Ar vienas jūsų norėtų valgyti savo mirusio brolio mėsą? Jūs to nekęstumėte (todėl nekęskite apkalbinėjimo).
Yaa warra amantan! Hedduu seehaa (mamii) irraa fagaadhaa; gariin seehaa diliidha. Wal hin basaasinaa. Gariin keessanis garii hin hamatin. Tokkoon keessan foon obboleessa isaa odoo du’ee jiruu nyaachuu ni fedhaa? jibbitanii jirtan. (isa jiraa hoo maalif nyaachuu feetan?) Rabbiin sodaadhaa. Rabbiin akkaan tawbaa qeebalaa, rahmata godhaadha. [5]
Enyi mlioamini!
Ey iman edenler! Zannın çoğundan kaçının. Çünkü zannın bir kısmı günahtır. Birbirinizin gizlisini araştırmayın. Birbirinizin gıybetini yapmayın. Biriniz, ölü kardeşinin etini yemeyi sever mi? Bundan tiksindiniz değil mi? Allah’tan sakının. Kuşkusuz Allah, tevbeleri çokça kabul edendir, çokça merhamet edendir.

The believers are brothers, so reconcile between your brothers, and remain conscious of God, so that you may receive mercy.
The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy
The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your two brethren and fear God, haply ye may obtain mercy
Only the faithful are brethren; wherefore make peace between your brethren; and fear God, that ye may obtain mercy
Verily the true believers are brethren: Wherefore reconcile your brethren; and fear God, that ye may obtain mercy

O you who believe! No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you slander one another, nor shall you insult one another with names. Evil is the return to wickedness after having attained faith. Whoever does not repent-these are the wrongdoers.
O ye who believe! Let not a folk deride a folk who may be better than they (are), not let women (deride) women who may be better than they are; neither defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. Bad is the name of lewdness after faith. And whoso turneth not in repentance, such are evil-doers
O ye who believe! let not one class ridicule another who are perchance better than they; nor let women ridicule other women who are perchance better than they; and do not defame each other, nor call each other bad names - an ill name is iniquity after faith
O Believers! let not men laugh men to scorn who haply may be better than themselves; neither let women laugh women to scorn who may haply be better than themselves! Neither defame one another, nor call one another by nicknames. Bad is it to be called wicked after having professed the faith: and whoso repent not of this are doers of wrong
O true believers, let not men laugh other men to scorn; who peradventure may be better than themselves: Neither let women laugh other women to scorn; who may possibly be better than themselves. Neither defame one another; nor call one another by opprobrious appellations. An ill name it is to be charged with wickedness, after having embraced the faith: And whoso repenteth not, they will be the unjust doers

O people! We created you from a male and a female, and made you races and tribes, that you may know one another. The best among you in the sight of God is the most righteous. God is All-Knowing, Well-Experienced.

O ye folk! verily, we have created you of male and female, and made you races and tribes that ye may know each other. Verily, the most honourable of you in the sight of God is the most pious of you; verily, God is knowing, aware
O men! verily, we have created you of a male and a female; and we have divided you into peoples and tribes that ye might have knowledge one of another. Truly, the most worthy of honour in the sight of God is he who feareth Him most. Verily, God is Knowing, Cognisant

The Desert-Arabs say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not believed; but say, 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered into your hearts. But if you obey God and His Messenger, He will not diminish any of your deeds. God is Forgiving and Merciful."
The wandering Arabs say: We believe. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Ye believe not, but rather say "We submit," for the faith hath not yet entered into your hearts. Yet, if ye obey Allah and His messenger, He will not withhold from you aught of (the reward of) your deeds. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
The desert Arabs say, 'We believe.' Say, 'Ye do not believe; but say, "We have become Muslims;" for the faith has not entered into your hearts: but if ye obey God and His Apostle He will not defraud you of your works at all: verily, God is forgiving, compassionate
The Arabs of the desert say, "We believe." Say thou: Ye believe not; but rather say, "We profess Islam;" for the faith hath not yet found its way into your hearts. But if ye obey God and His Apostle, he will not allow you to lose any of your actions: for God is Indulgent, Merciful
The Arabs of the desert say, we believe. Answer, ye do by no means believe; but say, we have embraced Islam: For the faith hath not yet entered into your hearts. If ye obey God and his apostle, He will not defraud you of any part of the merit of your works: For God is inclined to forgive, and merciful
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 49:6, 17:36, 24:12-13, 49:12, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - evil-liver + with + tidings; wicked + person + with + news; look + carefully + lest + ye + hurt; make + clear + lest + ye + smite; follow + not + that + whereof + thou + hast + no + knowledge. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:93 - matched incidentally; 57:12 - matched incidentally.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
