عَالَمِين AALAMIN Read the Qur'an in context

Does the Qur'an say to say "Ameen" aloud?

In short

  • The text says: the Opening ends with the path of those blessed, not of those under anger nor of those astray (1:6-7); those addressed are to be neither loud nor silent in their prayer but to follow a way between (17:110); and to call on their Lord humbly and in secret (7:55).
  • The text does not say: the word Ameen anywhere, or whether anything after the Opening is said aloud.
  • The rest comes from: a report that, when the Prophet recited the last verse of the Opening, he said Amin and raised his voice is in Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 2: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat) (Abu Dawud 932); and a report that those praying were told to say Amin when the one leading says it is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 10: Call to Prayers (Adhaan) (Bukhari 780).

Where the renderings split

17:110, Itani: "be neither loud in your prayer, nor silent in it"

17:110, Pickthall: "be not loud-voiced in thy worship nor yet silent therein"

17:110, Palmer: "do not say thy prayers openly, nor yet murmur them"

17:110, Rodwell: "be not loud in thy prayer, neither pronounce it too low"

17:110, Sale: "Pronounce not thy prayer aloud, neither pronounce it with too low a voice"

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 1:6–7 The close of the Opening, after which many say the word; the verses end without it
  2. 02 17:110 Neither loud nor silent in the prayer, but a way between
  3. 03 7:55 Call on your Lord humbly and in secret
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The word is not in the text. The Opening ends at 1:7 with the path of those who are not astray, and there it stops.

What the text does say about the voice in prayer is a middle way. At 17:110 Pickthall has "be not loud-voiced in thy worship nor yet silent therein, but follow a way between". At 7:55 Itani has "Call upon your Lord humbly and privately".

Saying Amin, and saying it aloud, comes from outside the Qur'an, from two reports named above, with links.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this rests on

Opens with 1:6–7, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Talal Itani2012 Are they waiting for anything but its fulfillment? The Day its fulfillment comes true, those who disregarded it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord did come with the truth. Have we any intercessors to intercede for us? Or, could we be sent back, to behave differently from the way we behaved before?" They ruined their souls, and what they used to invent has failed them.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Await they aught save the fulfilment thereof? On the day when the fulfilment thereof cometh, those who were before forgetful thereof will say: The messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth! Have we any intercessors, that they may intercede for us? Or can we be returned (to life on earth), that we may act otherwise than we used to act? They have lost their souls, and that which they devised hath failed them

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Do they wait now for aught but its interpretation?- on the day when its interpretation shall come, those who forgot it before will say, There did come to us the apostles of our Lord in truth, have we intercessors to intercede for us? or, could we return, we would do otherwise than we did.' They have lost themselves, and that which they devised has strayed away from them

John Medows Rodwell1861 What have they to wait for now but its interpretation? When its interpretation shall come, they who aforetime were oblivious of it shall say, "The Prophets of our Lord did indeed bring the truth; shall we have any intercessor to intercede for us? or could we not be sent back? Then would we act otherwise than we have acted." But they have ruined themselves; and the deities of their own devising have fled from them

George Sale1734 Do they wait for any other than the interpretation thereof? On the day whereon the interpretation thereof shall come, they who had forgotten the same before, shall say, now are we convinced by demonstration that the messengers of our Lord came unto us with truth: Shall we therefore have any intercessors, who will intercede for us? Or shall we be sent back into the world, that we may do other works than what we did in our life-time? But now have they lost their souls; and that which they impiously imagined, hath fled from them
