Does the Qur'an give the words of the prayer, or only the command to pray?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 1:1–7 AL-FATIHA ENTIRE, in as ONE PASSAGE because it is one prayer and dividing it would defeat the study: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful - Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds - the Beneficent, the Merciful - Master of the Day of Judgment - THEE (ALONE) WE WORSHIP, THEE (ALONE) WE ASK FOR HELP - SHOW US THE STRAIGHT PATH - the path of those whom Thou hast favoured, not of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray. This is here because it is the text's own answer to the question: here are words, and they are a petition. ALSO CARRIED by How is al-Fatiha itself a supplication said in every prayer? with a different reason.
  2. 02 20:14 Lo! I, even I, am Allah, there is no Allah save Me. SO SERVE ME AND ESTABLISH WORSHIP FOR MY REMEMBRANCE. This is here because it is the command in its barest form - establish the prayer - with a stated purpose and no content whatever. ALSO CARRIED by How does the Qur'an tell the story of Moses and Pharaoh?, where it falls inside the narrative arc.
  3. 03 17:110–111 In as ONE PASSAGE because 17:111 supplies the words that 17:110 has just discussed the manner of: be not loud-voiced in thy worship nor yet silent, but follow a way between - AND SAY: PRAISE BE TO ALLAH, WHO HATH NOT TAKEN UNTO HIMSELF A SON, and who hath no partner in the Sovereignty. Carried because it is a rare instance of the text giving an actual form of words to say. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about raising or lowering the voice in prayer? with a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Both, and the proportion between them is the study.

The command is everywhere and it is bare. 20:14 is the type: I am God, there is no god but Me, so serve Me AND ESTABLISH WORSHIP FOR MY REMEMBRANCE. A command, a purpose, and no content at all. The book gives that instruction dozens of times.

Words are given too, but rarely. The great instance is al-Fatiha, which is why it is carried here whole. Read as a prayer rather than as an opening, it has the shape of one: it praises, it names, and then at its centre it turns to address - THEE (ALONE) WE WORSHIP, THEE (ALONE) WE ASK FOR HELP - and then it asks for something. SHOW US THE STRAIGHT PATH. It is a petition, in the first person plural, and it is the first thing in the book.

The other instance is 17:111, which follows the instruction about the voice with an actual form of words: AND SAY - praise be to God, who has not taken to Himself a son, and has no partner in the sovereignty.

So the text supplies some words, and the sixteen supplication studies supply many more - though those are prayers the text puts in the mouths of prophets rather than liturgy prescribed to a congregation.

What it does not supply is the ORDER of the salah. The opening declaration, the formulas said while bowing and prostrating, the sitting, the testimony, the closing greeting - none of that spoken sequence is in the Qur'an. That is the Prophet's practice, transmitted in , and this platform holds none of it: no collection has cleared the rights audit.

The honest answer to the question as posed: the Qur'an gives the command constantly, gives one complete prayer and a handful of scattered forms, and does not give the words of the salah. A reader who has been told the whole liturgy is Qur'anic can check, and a reader who has been told none of it is can check that too.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 1:1–7, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

17:110–111 — the verse above

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 1:1-7, 20:14, 17:110-111, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.

The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 6 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. This study has been read against him at every anchor, on 9 September 2026, and no finding in it is withdrawn: 20:14 gives a command, a purpose and no content in all five, al-Fatiha turns to second-person address at its centre and then petitions in all five, and 17:111 supplies a form of words in all five. That the spoken sequence of the salah is not in the Qur'an is a statement about which verses exist and is unaffected by a fifth rendering. Itani enters as a fifth voice and is nowhere promoted to the reading that settles a word.

What the fifth rendering adds. This study turns on the SHAPE of al-Fatiha and on the presence or absence of a form of words, not on any single term, and both are the same in all five. The finding rests on the turn to address, which all five make, and is unchanged.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No probe was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every reference in that set was rendered from the real text before use and checked against the claim made for it; a reference whose rendered text did not carry that claim was dropped, not forced. THERE IS THEREFORE NO PROBE TO RE-RUN OVER FIVE, and the verse set is exactly the set signed on 6 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them. NO BAND OR SCORE IS QUOTED IN THIS BASIS, and none is added here: the version signed when four translations were cleared published no figure, so there is no four-based figure to restate over five.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
