And when one of them is given news of a female infant, his face darkens, and he chokes with grief.
What does the Qur'an say about favouring sons over daughters?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 16:58–59 WHEN IF ONE OF THEM RECEIVETH TIDINGS OF THE BIRTH OF A FEMALE, HIS FACE REMAINETH DARKENED, AND HE IS WROTH INWARDLY. HE HIDETH HIMSELF FROM THE FOLK BECAUSE OF THE EVIL OF THAT WHEREOF HE HATH HAD TIDINGS, ASKING HIMSELF: SHALL HE KEEP IT IN CONTEMPT, OR BURY IT BENEATH THE DUST? VERILY EVIL IS THEIR JUDGMENT. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the fullest description of the attitude anywhere in the text - the face, the concealment, the deliberation - and 16:59 ends with the verdict.
- 02 43:15–19 And they allot to Him a portion of His bondmen... OR CHOOSETH HE DAUGHTERS OF ALL THAT HE HATH CREATED, AND HONOURETH HE YOU WITH SONS? AND IF ONE OF THEM HATH TIDINGS OF THAT WHICH HE LIKENETH TO THE BENEFICENT ONE, HIS FACE REMAINETH DARKENED AND HE IS WROTH INWARDLY. In as ONE PASSAGE because the argument is that they assign to God the very thing they are ashamed of, which is the sharpest form of the rebuke.
- 03 52:39 OR HATH HE DAUGHTERS WHEREAS YE HAVE SONS? In because it is the same argument in six words.
- 04 42:49–50 He createth what He will. HE BESTOWETH FEMALE UPON WHOM HE WILL, AND BESTOWETH MALE UPON WHOM HE WILL; or He mingleth them, males and females, and He maketh barren whom He will. In as ONE PASSAGE because it names female FIRST, treats both as bestowals, and closes the question of whose doing it is.
- 05 81:8–9 AND WHEN THE GIRL-CHILD THAT WAS BURIED ALIVE IS ASKED FOR WHAT SIN SHE WAS SLAIN. In as ONE PASSAGE because the question at the Judgment is put TO HER, not to the killers, and because the phrasing assumes there was no sin. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the killing of infant girls?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an describes this attitude with more psychological detail than it gives to almost any other social fault, and then argues against it in an unexpected way.
16:58-59 is the description. On hearing of a daughter's birth: HIS FACE REMAINETH DARKENED, AND HE IS WROTH INWARDLY. He HIDETH HIMSELF FROM THE FOLK because of the evil tidings. And then the deliberation, quoted: SHALL HE KEEP IT IN CONTEMPT, OR BURY IT BENEATH THE DUST? The verse follows a man through humiliation to a calculation about a child's life, and ends: EVIL IS THEIR JUDGMENT.
The argument the Qur'an makes against it is not a defence of daughters. It is an exposure of inconsistency.
43:16 and 52:39 both point out that these same people attributed daughters to God: OR CHOOSETH HE DAUGHTERS OF ALL THAT HE HATH CREATED, AND HONOURETH HE YOU WITH SONS? They assigned to God the thing they were ashamed to have. 43:17 then repeats the darkened face - this time about a man hearing of the birth of what he has just likened to God.
42:49 settles whose doing it is, and its word order is deliberate: HE BESTOWETH FEMALE UPON WHOM HE WILL, AND BESTOWETH MALE UPON WHOM HE WILL. Female first, both called a bestowal, and barrenness named in the same breath as a third possibility.
And 81:8-9 is the verse that ends the argument. At the Judgment, THE GIRL-CHILD THAT WAS BURIED ALIVE IS ASKED FOR WHAT SIN SHE WAS SLAIN. The question is put to the victim, and its form presumes the answer: none.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 16:58–59, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Yet when one of them is given news of what he attributes to the Most Gracious, his face darkens, and he suppresses grief.
Compare translations (4)
And if one of them hath tidings of that which he likeneth to the Beneficent One, his countenance becometh black and he is full of inward rage
Yet when the tidings are given any one of that which he strikes out as a similitude for the Merciful One, his face grows black and he is choked
But when that is announced to any one of them, which he affirmeth to be the case with the God of Mercy, his face settleth into darkness and he is silent - sad
But when one of them hath the news brought of the birth of a child of that sex which they attribute unto the Merciful, as his similitude, his face becometh black, and he is oppressed with sorrow

(Liken they then to Allah) that which is bred up in outward show, and in dispute cannot make itself plain
What! one brought up amongst ornaments, and who is always in contention without obvious cause
What! make they a being to be the offspring of God who is brought up among trinkets, and is ever contentious without reason
Do they therefore attribute unto God female issue, which are brought up among ornaments, and are contentious without cause

And it was not (vouchsafed) to any mortal that Allah should speak to him unless (it be) by revelation or from behind a veil, or (that) He sendeth a messenger to reveal what He will by His leave. Lo! He is Exalted, Wise
It is not for any mortal that God should speak to him, except by inspiration, or from behind a veil, or by sending an apostle and inspiring, by His permission, what He pleases; verily, He is high and wise
It is not for man that God should speak with him but by vision, or from behind a veil: Or, He sendeth a messenger to reveal, by his permission, what He will: for He is Exalted, Wise
It is not fit for man, that God should speak unto him otherwise than by private revelation, or from behind a veil, or by his sending of a messenger to reveal, by his permission, that which He pleaseth; for He is high and wise

We thus inspired you spiritually, by Our command. You did not know what the Scripture is, nor what faith is, but We made it a light, with which We guide whomever We will of Our servants. You surely guide to a straight path.
And thus have We inspired in thee (Muhammad) a Spirit of Our command. Thou knewest not what the Scripture was, nor what the Faith. But We have made it a light whereby We guide whom We will of Our bondmen. And lo! thou verily dost guide unto a right path
And thus have we inspired thee by a spirit at our bidding; thou didst not know what the Book was, nor the faith: but we made it a light whereby we guide whom we will of our servants. And, verily, thou shalt surely be guided into the right way
Thus have we sent the Spirit (Gabriel) to thee with a revelation, by our command. Thou knewest not, ere this, what "the Book" was, or what the faith. But we have ordained it for a light: by it will we guide whom we please of our servants. And thou shalt surely guide into the right way
Thus have We revealed unto thee a revelation, by our command. Thou didst not understand, before this, what the book of the Koran was, nor what the faith was: But We have ordained the same for a light; We will thereby direct such of our servants as We please: And thou shalt surely direct them into the right way

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 16:58-59, 43:15-19, 52:39, 42:49-50, 81:8-9, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - when + if + one + of + them + receiveth + tidings + of + the + birth + of + a + female; his + face + becometh + dark; shall + he + keep + it + in + contempt + or + bury + it + beneath + the + dust; ye + have + sons + and + he + hath + daughters; he + bestoweth + female + upon + whom + he + will. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
