What does the Qur'an say about the killing of infant girls?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 81:8–9 AND WHEN THE GIRL-CHILD THAT WAS BURIED ALIVE IS ASKED FOR WHAT SIN SHE WAS SLAIN. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the verse the question is about, and because of who is questioned - the victim, not the killer - and because the question's form presumes there was no sin.
  2. 02 16:58–59 When if one of them receiveth tidings of the birth of a female, his face remaineth darkened, and he is wroth inwardly. He hideth himself from the folk... asking himself: SHALL HE KEEP IT IN CONTEMPT, OR BURY IT BENEATH THE DUST? VERILY EVIL IS THEIR JUDGMENT. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the only place the deliberation is described from inside, and both options offered are terrible. ALSO CARRIED by sons-and-daughters, with a different reason there.
  3. 03 17:31 SLAY NOT YOUR CHILDREN, FEARING A FALL TO POVERTY. WE SHALL PROVIDE FOR THEM AND FOR YOU. Lo, the slaying of them is great sin. In because it names the motive - anticipated poverty - and answers it. ALSO CARRIED by raising-children and childrens-rights, with different reasons there.
  4. 04 6:151 And that ye slay not your children BECAUSE OF PENURY - WE PROVIDE FOR YOU AND FOR THEM. In because it names present poverty rather than feared poverty, and the order of the pronouns is reversed from 17:31 - a difference the four translators all preserve.
  5. 05 6:137–140 Thus have their associates made the slaying of their children seem fair unto many of the idolaters, that they may ruin them and make their faith obscure for them... THEY ARE LOSERS WHO BESOTTEDLY HAVE SLAIN THEIR CHILDREN WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE, and have forbidden that which God bestowed upon them, INVENTING A LIE AGAINST GOD. THEY INDEED HAVE GONE ASTRAY AND ARE NOT GUIDED. In as ONE PASSAGE because it names the practice as something MADE TO SEEM FAIR and ties it to a false claim about what God has forbidden.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

81:8-9 is two lines and it is among the most striking constructions in the Qur'an.

AND WHEN THE GIRL-CHILD THAT WAS BURIED ALIVE IS ASKED - FOR WHAT SIN SHE WAS SLAIN.

The question at the Judgment is put to HER. Not to her father, not to those who allowed it. And the form of the question makes the verdict before any answer is given: for WHAT SIN. It presumes there was none.

The verse sits in a passage listing the upheavals of the last day - the sun folded up, the mountains moved, the seas boiling - and the questioning of a buried infant is placed among cosmic events.

16:58-59 shows the deliberation that led there, and shows it from inside the man's head. On hearing of a daughter's birth his face darkens; he hides from people; and then the calculation: SHALL HE KEEP IT IN CONTEMPT, OR BURY IT BENEATH THE DUST? Both options are appalling, and the text presents them as the two he is weighing. The verdict: EVIL IS THEIR JUDGMENT.

The general prohibition is stated twice with different motives named. 17:31 addresses FEARED poverty - fearing a fall to poverty - and answers WE SHALL PROVIDE FOR THEM AND FOR YOU. 6:151 addresses present penury and reverses the pronouns: WE PROVIDE FOR YOU AND FOR THEM. All four translators preserve the difference, and it reads as deliberate: to the one who is afraid, the child's provision is named first.

And 6:137-140 says the practice was MADE TO SEEM FAIR to them, and connects it to inventing prohibitions and attributing them to God - which is the fault the signed study speaking-without-knowledge carries.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 81:8–9, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Say: Come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord hath made a sacred duty for you: That ye ascribe no thing as partner unto Him and that ye do good to parents, and that ye slay not your children because of penury - We provide for you and for them - and that ye draw not nigh to lewd things whether open or concealed. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Talal Itani2012 And do not come near the property of the orphan, except with the best intentions, until he reaches maturity. And give full weight and full measure, equitably. We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity. And when you speak, be fair, even if it concerns a close relative. And fulfill your covenant with God. All this He has enjoined upon you, so that you may take heed.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And approach not the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better, till he reach maturity. Give full measure and full weight, in justice. We task not any soul beyond its scope. And if ye give your word, do justice thereunto, even though it be (against) a kinsman; and fulfil the covenant of Allah. This He commandeth you that haply ye may remember

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And draw not nigh unto the wealth of the orphan, save so as to better it, until he reaches full age; and give weight and measure with justice. We do not compel the soul save what it can compass; and when ye pronounce, then be just, though it be in the case of a relative

John Medows Rodwell1861 And come not nigh to the substance of the orphan, but to improve it, until he come of age: and use a full measure, and a just balance: We will not task a soul beyond its ability. And when ye give judgment, observe justice, even though it be the affair of a kinsman, and fulfil the covenant of God. This hath God enjoined you for your monition

George Sale1734 And meddle not with the substance of the orphan, otherwise than for the improving thereof, until he attain his age of strength; and use a full measure, and a just balance. We will not impose a task on any soul, beyond its ability. And when ye pronounce judgement observe justice, although it be for or against one who is near of kin, and fulfill the covenant of God. This hath God commanded you, that ye may be admonished

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And God's compact fulfill ye; that is what He ordained you, haply ye may be mindful. Verily, this is my right way; follow it then, and follow not various paths, to separate yourselves from His way; that is what He has ordained you, haply ye may fear

Ai do t'i ndëshkojë ata për sajimet e tyre.

In verità Lui è Saggio, Sapiente.

(Bütün bunları) Allah’a iftira ederek yaparlar.

Şüphesiz Rabbin hikmet sahibidir, her şeyi hakkıyla bilendir.

6:140 Akılsızlıkları yüzünden, bilgisizce çocuklarını öldüren ve Allah’ın kendilerine verdiği rızıkları, Allah’a iftira ederek haram sayanlar, elbette hüsrana uğramıştır.

Talal Itani2012 And they set aside for God a share of the crops and the livestock He created, and they say, "This is for God," according to their claim, "and this is for our idols." But the share of their idols does not reach God, yet the share of God reaches their idols. Evil is their judgment.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 They assign unto Allah, of the crops and cattle which He created, a portion, and they say: "This is Allah's" - in their make-believe - "and this is for (His) partners in regard to us." Thus that which (they assign) unto His partners in them reacheth not Allah and that which (they assign) unto Allah goeth to their (so-called) partners. Evil is their ordinance

Edward Henry Palmer1880 They set apart for God, from what He raises of tilth and of cattle, a portion, and they say, 'This is God's;' - as they pretend - ' and this is for our associates;' but that which is for their associates reaches not to God, and that which was for God does reach to their associates;- evil is it what they judge

John Medows Rodwell1861 Moreover, they set apart a portion of the fruits and cattle which he hath produced, and say, "This for God" - so deem they - "And this for his companions, whom we associate with Him." But that which is for these companions of theirs, cometh not to God; yet that which is for God, cometh to the companions! Ill do they judge

George Sale1734 Those of Mecca set apart unto God a portion of that which he hath produced of the fruits of the earth, and of cattle; and say, this belongeth unto God, -- according to their imaginations, -- and this unto our companions. And that which is destined for their companions cometh not unto God; yet that which is set apart unto God cometh unto their companions. How ill do they judge

Talal Itani2012 It is He who produces gardens, both cultivated and wild, and date-palms, and crops of diverse tastes, and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of its fruit when it yields, and give its due on the day of its harvest, and do not waste. He does not love the wasteful.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 He it is Who produceth gardens trellised and untrellised, and the date-palm, and crops of divers flavour, and the olive and the pomegranate, like and unlike. Eat ye of the fruit thereof when it fruiteth, and pay the due thereof upon the harvest day, and be not prodigal. Lo! Allah loveth not the prodigals

Edward Henry Palmer1880 He it is who brought forth gardens with trailed and untrailed vines, and the palms and corn land, with various food, and olives, and pomegranates, alike and unlike. Eat from the fruit thereof whene'er it fruits, and bring the dues thereof on the day of harvest, and be not extravagant; verily, He loves not the extravagant

John Medows Rodwell1861 He it is who produceth gardens of the vine trellised and untrellised, and the palm trees, and the corn of various food, and olives, and pomegranates, like and unlike. Eat of their fruit when they bear fruit, and pay the due thereof on the day of its ingathering: and be not prodigal, for God loveth not the prodigal

George Sale1734 He it is who produceth gardens of vines, both those which are supported on trails of wood, and those which are not supported, and palm-trees, and the corn affording various food, and olives, and pomegranates, alike and unlike unto one another. Eat of their fruit, when they bear fruit, and pay the due thereof on the day whereon ye shall gather it; but be not profuse, for God loveth not those who are too profuse

Talal Itani2012 Among the livestock are some for transportation, and some for clothing. Eat of what God has provided for you, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is to you an outright enemy.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And of the cattle (He produceth) some for burdens, some for food. Eat of that which Allah hath bestowed upon you, and follow not the footsteps of the devil, for lo! he is an open foe to you

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Of cattle are there some to ride on and to spread. Eat of what God has bestowed upon you, and follow not the footsteps of Satan; verily, he is to you an open foe

John Medows Rodwell1861 And there are cattle for burdens and for journeys. Eat of what God hath given you for food; and follow not the steps of Satan, for he is your declared enemy

George Sale1734 And God hath given you some cattle fit for bearing of burdens, and some fit for slaughter only. Eat of what God hath given you for food; and follow not the steps of Satan, for he is your declared enemy

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 81:8-9, 16:58-59, 17:31, 6:151, 6:137-140, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - when + the + girl-child + that + was + buried + alive + is + asked; for + what + sin + she + was + slain; slay + not + your + children + fearing + a + fall + to + poverty; kill + not + your + children + on + a + plea + of + want. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
