When the sun is rolled up.
What does Surah at-Takwir (The Overthrowing) say?
In short
- The surah says: when the sun is rolled up and the stars, mountains, seas and souls follow in turn (81:1-7), the girl buried alive will be asked for what crime she was killed (81:8-9), and each soul will know what it has readied (81:14); it calls this the speech of a noble messenger (81:19), says the hearers' friend is not possessed (81:22), calls it a reminder (81:27), and says they cannot will unless God wills (81:29).
- The surah does not say: who it was that was seen on the luminous horizon (81:23); no translator names him.
- The rest comes from: another surah tells of one mighty in power who appeared on the highest horizon, the loftiest tract in Palmer (53:5-7), and it names no one either; this study reads at-Takwir alone. Who was seen is a question for commentary, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
Where the renderings split
81:15, Itani: "I swear"
81:15, Pickthall: "I call to witness"
81:15, Palmer: "I need not swear"
81:15, Rodwell: "It needs not that I swear"
81:15, Sale: "Verily I swear"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 81:1 When the sun is overthrown. This is here because it opens the surah with the first of a run of clauses on what will happen, the sun: "folded up" in Sale and Palmer, "rolled up" in Itani and "overthrown" in Pickthall, and Rodwell prints the same words as Sale and Palmer in capitals.
- 02 81:2 And when the stars fall. This is here because it adds the stars, and the renderings differ: "shall fall" in Sale and Rodwell, "do fall" in Palmer and "the stars fall" in Pickthall, where Itani has "the stars are dimmed". This study does not choose between them.
- 03 81:3 And when the hills are moved. This is here because it adds the mountains: "made to pass away" in Sale, "set in motion" in Rodwell and Itani and "the mountains are moved" in Palmer, with "the hills are moved" in Pickthall.
- 04 81:4 And when the camels big with young are abandoned. This is here because it adds a thing left untended, and the renderings divide: "the camels ten months gone with young" in Sale, "the she-camels ten months gone with young" in Palmer, "the she-camels" in Rodwell and "the camels big with young" in Pickthall, where Itani has "the relationships are suspended". They are "neglected" in Sale and Palmer and "abandoned" in Rodwell and Pickthall. This study does not choose between them.
- 05 81:5 And when the wild beasts are herded together. This is here because it adds the beasts: "the wild beasts shall be gathered together" in Sale and Rodwell, "the wild beasts are herded together" in Pickthall, "the beasts shall be crowded together" in Palmer and "the beasts are gathered" in Itani.
- 06 81:6 And when the seas rise. This is here because it adds the seas, and the renderings differ: "shall boil" in Sale and Rodwell, "shall surge up" in Palmer and "the seas rise" in Pickthall, where Itani has "the oceans are set aflame". This study does not choose between them.
- 07 81:7 And when souls are reunited. This is here because it adds the souls, and the renderings differ: "joined again to their bodies" in Sale, "paired with their bodies" in Rodwell and "paired with bodies" in Palmer, where Pickthall has "reunited" and Itani "the souls are paired", without naming with what. This study does not choose between them.
- 08 81:8 And when the girl-child that was buried alive is asked. This is here because it says the one buried alive shall be asked: "the girl who hath been buried alive" in Sale, "the female child that had been buried alive" in Rodwell, "the girl-child that was buried alive" in Pickthall and "the girl, buried alive" in Itani, where Palmer has "the child who was buried alive". Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about favouring sons over daughters?, with a different reason there.
- 09 81:9 For what sin she was slain. This is here because it gives the question put to her: "for what crime" in Sale, "For what crime" in Rodwell and Itani and "for what sin" in Palmer, "For what sin" in Pickthall; she was "put to death" in Sale and Rodwell, "slain" in Palmer and Pickthall and "killed" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about favouring sons over daughters?, with a different reason there.
- 10 81:10 And when the pages are laid open. This is here because it adds the records: "the books shall be laid open" in Sale, "the leaves of the Book shall be unrolled" in Rodwell, "the pages shall be spread out" in Palmer, "the pages are laid open" in Pickthall and "the records are made public" in Itani.
- 11 81:11 And when the sky is torn away. This is here because it adds the sky: "removed" in Sale, "stripped away" in Rodwell, "flayed" in Palmer, "torn away" in Pickthall and "peeled away" in Itani.
- 12 81:12 And when hell is lighted. This is here because it adds hell: "shall burn fiercely" in Sale, "shall be made to blaze" in Rodwell, "shall be set ablaze" in Palmer, "is lighted" in Pickthall and "is set ablaze" in Itani; it is "hell" in Sale, Palmer and Pickthall, "Hell" in Rodwell and "the Fire" in Itani.
- 13 81:13 And when the Garden is brought nigh. This is here because it adds the garden: "brought near" in Sale, Rodwell and Itani and "brought nigh" in Palmer and Pickthall; it is "paradise" in Sale, "Paradise" in Rodwell, Palmer and Itani and "the Garden" in Pickthall.
- 14 81:14 (Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready. This is here because it closes the run of clauses with what follows them, that each soul will know its own deeds: "what it hath wrought" in Sale, "what it hath produced" in Rodwell, "what it has produced" in Palmer, "what it hath made ready" in Pickthall and "what it has readied" in Itani. The bracket "(Then)" in Pickthall is his own.
- 15 81:15 Oh, but I call to witness the planets. This is here because it turns to an oath, and the renderings divide over whether one is sworn: "Verily I swear by the stars which are retrograde" in Sale, "I call to witness the planets" in Pickthall and "I swear by the galaxies" in Itani, where Rodwell has "It needs not that I swear by the stars of retrograde motions" and Palmer "I need not swear by the stars that slink back". This study does not choose between them.
- 16 81:16 The stars which rise and set. This is here because it describes those stars, and the renderings differ: "which move swiftly, and which hide themselves" in Sale, "Which move swiftly and hide themselves away" in Rodwell and "moving swiftly, slinking into their dens" in Palmer, where Pickthall has "The stars which rise and set" and Itani "Precisely running their courses". This study does not choose between them.
- 17 81:17 And the close of night. This is here because it adds the night, and the renderings differ: "when it cometh on" in Sale, "when it cometh darkening on" in Rodwell and "when darkness draws on" in Palmer, where Pickthall has "the close of night" and Itani "as it recedes". This study does not choose between them.
- 18 81:18 And the breath of morning. This is here because it adds the morning: "when it appeareth" in Sale, "when it brighteneth" in Rodwell, "when it first breathes up" in Palmer, "the breath of morning" in Pickthall and "as it breathes" in Itani.
- 19 81:19 That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger. This is here because it gives what the oath is about, that this is the word of a messenger: "the words of an honourable messenger" in Sale, "the word of an illustrious Messenger" in Rodwell, "the speech of a noble apostle" in Palmer, "the word of an honoured messenger" in Pickthall and "the speech of a noble messenger" in Itani.
- 20 81:20 Mighty, established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne. This is here because it describes the messenger: "Endued with power" in Rodwell, "Endowed with power" in Itani and "mighty" in Palmer, "Mighty" in Pickthall, where Sale has strength; his standing is "of established dignity in the sight of the possessor of the throne" in Sale, "having influence with the Lord of the Throne" in Rodwell, "standing sure with the Lord of the throne" in Palmer, "established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne" in Pickthall and "eminent with the Lord of the Throne" in Itani.
- 21 81:21 (One) to be obeyed, and trustworthy. This is here because it describes him further: "obeyed and trusty too" in Palmer, "Obeyed and honest" in Itani and "to be obeyed, and trustworthy" in Pickthall, where Sale has "obeyed by the angels under his authority, and faithful" and Rodwell "Obeyed there by Angels, faithful to his trust". Sale and Rodwell alone name angels as those who obey. The bracket "(One)" in Pickthall is his own.
- 22 81:22 And your comrade is not mad. This is here because it turns to the hearers and says of one among them that he is not mad or possessed: "Your comrade is not mad" in Palmer, "your comrade is not mad" in Pickthall, "your compatriot is not one possessed by djinn" in Rodwell, "Your friend is not possessed" in Itani and "your companion Mohammed is not distracted" in Sale. His name, "Mohammed" in Sale, is in none of the others.
- 23 81:23 Surely he beheld Him on the clear horizon. This is here because it says he saw him on the horizon: "He had already seen him in the clear horizon" in Sale, "he saw him in the clear horizon" in Rodwell, "he saw him on the plain horizon" in Palmer, "he beheld Him on the clear horizon" in Pickthall and "He saw him on the luminous horizon" in Itani. The capital on the one seen, "Him" in Pickthall, is in none of the others.
- 24 81:24 And he is not avid of the Unseen. This is here because it says what he does with the unseen, and the renderings divide: "he suspected not the secrets revealed unto him" in Sale, "Nor doth he grapple with heaven's secrets" in Rodwell, "nor does he grudge to communicate the unseen" in Palmer and "he is not avid of the Unseen" in Pickthall, where Itani has "He does not withhold knowledge of the Unseen". This study does not choose between them.
- 25 81:25 Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned. This is here because it denies that this comes from a devil: "Neither are these the words of an accursed devil" in Sale, "Nor is it the speech of a pelted devil" in Palmer, "Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned" in Pickthall and "it is not the word of an accursed devil" in Itani, where Rodwell has "Nor doth he teach the doctrine of a cursed Satan", of what he teaches. This study does not choose between them.
- 26 81:26 Whither then go ye. This is here because it asks the hearers where they are going: "Whither, therefore, are ye going" in Sale, "Whither then are ye going" in Rodwell, "Then whither do ye go" in Palmer, "Whither then go ye" in Pickthall and "So where are you heading" in Itani.
- 27 81:27 This is naught else than a reminder unto creation. This is here because it says what this is: "an admonition unto all creatures" in Sale, "a warning to all creatures" in Rodwell, "a reminder to the worlds" in Palmer, "a reminder unto creation" in Pickthall and "a Reminder to all mankind" in Itani.
- 28 81:28 Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight. This is here because it names for whom: "willing to walk uprightly" in Sale, "willeth to walk in a straight path" in Rodwell, "pleases to go straight" in Palmer, "willeth to walk straight" in Pickthall and "wills to go straight" in Itani.
- 29 81:29 And ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth, the Lord of Creation. This is here because it closes the surah on their will and God's: "ye shall not will, unless God willeth" in Sale, "will it ye shall not, unless as God willeth it" in Rodwell, "ye will not please, except God" in Palmer, "ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth" in Pickthall and "you cannot will, unless God wills" in Itani; the Lord is "the Lord of all creatures" in Sale, "the Lord of the worlds" in Rodwell, "the Lord of the world" in Palmer, "the Lord of Creation" in Pickthall and "The Lord of the Worlds" in Itani. The bracket "(it be)" in Pickthall is his own.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah at-Takwir runs from 81:1 to 81:29. It opens with a run of clauses, each beginning with when, that tell of the sun folded up or overthrown, the stars falling or dimmed, the mountains or hills moved, the seas boiling, rising or set aflame, and souls paired or reunited. At 81:4 the renderings divide: "the camels ten months gone with young" in Sale, "the she-camels" in Rodwell and "the camels big with young" in Pickthall, where Itani has "the relationships are suspended". This study does not choose between them. At 81:8-9 the girl buried alive is asked for what crime or sin she was put to death. The records are laid open, the sky is stripped away, hell is set ablaze and paradise brought near, and at 81:14 each soul knows what it has made ready. At 81:15 the renderings divide over whether an oath is sworn: "Verily I swear" in Sale, "I call to witness the planets" in Pickthall and "I swear by the galaxies" in Itani, where Rodwell has "It needs not that I swear" and Palmer "I need not swear". This study does not choose between them. What follows says that this is the word of a noble messenger, standing with the Lord of the throne, that the hearers' companion is not mad or possessed, and that he saw him on the horizon; at 81:24 the renderings part over what he does with the unseen. It denies that this is the word of a devil, asks the hearers where they are going, calls it a reminder to whoever wills to go straight, and closes at 81:29 on their not willing unless God wills.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer about meaning, and which source would be needed. It does not say what is left untended at 81:4, whom the one addressed saw on the horizon, or whether an oath is sworn at 81:15 or declined, in the sense the words carry in Arabic: that would need a commentary (), a layer this platform does not hold or show.
What this rests on
Opens with 81:1, widening across 29 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 29 passages, each with every cleared translation
29 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

81:29 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five English translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 81:1-29, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography: they are layers this platform does not hold or show.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah at-Takwir, from 81:1 to 81:29, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
What this study does not answer about occasion, and which source would be needed. It does not say what occasioned the words about the hearers' companion, or on what occasion any verse here was given: that would need an source (accounts of the occasions of revelation), a layer this platform does not hold or show. It offers no academic-historical reading either: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
