And the sun runs towards its destination. Such is the design of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.
Does the Qur'an teach that the sun orbits the earth - and does it say what the sun moves around?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 36:38–40 And the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him ... and for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf ... it is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day; they float each in an orbit. In as ONE PASSAGE because the claim is made from 36:38 alone and answered by 36:40, which puts the sun and the moon in the SAME construction - each in its own orbit - so that whatever the verse asserts of the sun it asserts equally of the moon. DUAL-PLACED with What does the Qur'an say about the sun, the moon, and their orbits - and does it name a centre?, where the reason is descriptive.
- 02 21:33 He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; they float, each in an orbit. In because it states the same thing without any narrative around it: sun and moon alike, each in an orbit, and no centre named. DUAL-PLACED with What does the Qur'an say about the sun, the moon, and their orbits - and does it name a centre?, where the reason is descriptive.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text says the sun moves. It does not say what it moves around, and that is the whole of the answer.
36:38 says the sun runs to a resting-place appointed for it. 21:33 and 36:40 say the sun and the moon each float in an orbit. No verse in these renderings names a centre, and no verse says the sun goes round the earth.
The structure of 36:38-40 is what makes the claim hard to sustain. The sun runs; the moon has appointed stations; and then 36:40 puts them in one sentence - it is not for the sun to overtake the moon, and each floats in an orbit. Whatever the passage predicates of the sun it predicates of the moon in the same breath. Since the moon does orbit the earth, that one sentence cannot be read as a claim about the sun that is false and about the moon that is true. It is a statement that both are in appointed motion.
This cuts both ways, and the study says so. It removes the geocentrism the question alleges. It equally removes the counter-claim - popular in the other direction - that these verses anticipate the sun's motion through the galaxy. Neither reading is in the words. The text says: appointed motion, a resting-place, an orbit each, and no collision.
The plain descriptive reading is the one the study offers, and readers who want it without the controversy should go to What does the Qur'an say about the sun, the moon, and their orbits - and does it name a centre?, which carries the same verses with descriptive reasons and makes no claim in either direction. The claim side is handled in Did the Qur'an predict modern science - and does any verse say it is making a prediction?
Whether the first hearers understood these words within a geocentric picture of the cosmos is a HISTORICAL question about seventh-century astronomy, and the academic-historical layer is not built. That is a stated absence.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 36:38–40, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation
2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

We did not grant immortality to any human being before you. Should you die, are they then the immortal?
We appointed immortality for no mortal before thee. What! if thou diest, can they be immortal
We never made for any mortal before thee immortality; what, if thou shouldst die, will they live on for aye
At no time have we granted to man a life that shall last for ever: if thou then die, shall they live for ever
We have not granted unto any man before thee, eternal permanency in this world; if thou die therefore, will they be immortal

Every soul shall taste of death: and for trial will we prove you with evil and with good; and unto Us shall ye be brought back
Every soul shall taste of death: And We will prove you with evil, and with good, for a trial of you; and unto Us shall ye return

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 36:38-40, 21:33, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim about grammatical construction was removed. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
