And the sun runs towards its destination. Such is the design of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.
What does the Qur'an say about the sun, the moon, and their orbits - and does it name a centre?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 36:38–40 And the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him - that is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise. And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf. It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day; they float each in an orbit. In as ONE PASSAGE because the three verses are one argument: the sun's course, the moon's stations, and then the rule that governs both. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an teach that the sun orbits the earth - and does it say what the sun moves around?, with a different reason there.
- 02 21:33 He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; they float, each in an orbit. In because it is the bare statement with no narrative around it, and because the swimming or floating verb is the one the whole image rests on. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an teach that the sun orbits the earth - and does it say what the sun moves around?, with a different reason there.
- 03 13:2 God it is Who raised up the heavens without visible supports, then mounted the Throne, and compelled the sun and the moon to be of service, each running unto an appointed term. In because it introduces the appointed term - the courses are described as having an end, not only a path.
- 04 31:29 Hast thou not seen how God causeth the night to pass into the day, and hath subdued the sun and the moon, each running unto an appointed term? In because it joins the alternation of night and day to the courses in a single sentence. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about night and day 'wrapping' each other?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four passages, and this study reports them and stops. The arguments built on them in both directions - that they anticipate modern astronomy, or that they teach a geocentric cosmos - are handled in Did the Qur'an predict modern science - and does any verse say it is making a prediction? and Does the Qur'an teach that the sun orbits the earth - and does it say what the sun moves around? Here the verses are allowed to say what they say.
They say the sun runs to a resting-place appointed for it (36:38). They say the moon has appointed stations, and that it returns thin and curved LIKE AN OLD SHRIVELLED PALM-LEAF (36:39), which is the only simile in the set and an exact one for a waning crescent. They say the sun does not overtake the moon and the night does not outstrip the day, and that each floats in an orbit (36:40, 21:33).
The verb in 21:33 and 36:40 is the one that carries the image. Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall render it float and swim; the Arabic is the word for moving through water. Whatever the text is describing, it is describing it as swimming rather than as rolling or being carried.
13:2 and 31:29 add the other recurring term: each runs to an APPOINTED TERM. The courses are given an end as well as a path, and both verses set them under the language of being compelled or subdued to service.
Two things the text does not do. It does not name a centre - no verse says what the sun or the moon goes around. And it does not treat the arrangement as permanent: the appointed term is stated twice.
31:29 also belongs to What does the Qur'an say about night and day 'wrapping' each other?; it is carried in both with different reasons, because the sentence genuinely does two jobs.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 36:38–40, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.
CLEARED. Licence read verbatim from the block embedded in this very file. Ingested exactly as shipped: no normalisation, no stripping of marks, no Unicode recomposition.

E a yiaani won'de Alla no naatna jemma on e ndeer ñalawra on, O naatna ñalawma kadi e ndeer jemma on, O eltii kadi na'ange ngen e lewru ndun, kala majji no doga haa e lajal innaangal? E won'de Alla ko kumpitiiɗo ko ngolloton kon.
Δε βλέπεις (ω, Προφήτη) ότι ο Αλλάχ εισάγει τη νύχτα στην ημέρα, και εισάγει την ημέρα στη νύχτα (δηλ. αυξάνει και μειώνει τις ώρες τους, το χειμώνα και το καλοκαίρι), και ότι έχει υποτάξει τον ήλιο και το φεγγάρι (για να σας ωφελήσουν), και ο καθένας τους τρέχει (στην τροχιά του) για ένα καθορισμένο χρόνο, και ότι ο Αλλάχ για ό,τι κάνετε έχει απεριόριστη γνώση;

Güneş'i ve Ay'ı sizin hizmetinize sunmuştur. Her biri belli bir süreye (kadar) akıp gider. Allah, yaptığınız her şeyden haberdardır.

If all the trees on earth were pens, filled by the ocean, with seven more oceans besides, the Words of God would not run out. God is Majestic and Wise.

If whatever trees are in the earth were pens, and he should after that swell the sea into seven seas of ink, the words of God would not be exhausted; for God is mighty, and wise

31:29 — the verse above
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلْبَٰطِلُ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلْعَلِىُّ ٱلْكَبِيرُ

The translators word this verse differently
That is because God is the Reality, and what they worship besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Exalted, the Supreme.
That (is so) because Allah, He is the True, and that which they invoke beside Him is the False, and because Allah, He is the Sublime, the Great
That is because God, He is true, and because what ye call on beside Him is falsehood, and because God, He is the high, the great
This, for that God is the truth; and that whatever ye call upon beside Him is a vain thing; and that God - He is the High, the Great
This is declared concerning the divine knowledge and power, for that God is the true being, and for that whatever ye invoke, besides him, is vanity; and for that God is the high, the great God

Have you not seen how the ships sail through the sea, by the grace of God, to show you of His wonders? In that are signs for every persevering, thankful person.
Hast thou not seen how the ships glide on the sea by Allah's grace, that He may show you of His wonders? Lo! therein indeed are portents for every steadfast, grateful (heart)
Dost thou not see that the ship rides on in the sea by the favour of God, that He may show you of His signs? verily, in that are signs to every grateful person

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 36:38-40, 21:33, 13:2, 31:29, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - sun + moon + course; sun + moon + swim; sun + moon + float; orbit; sphere; appointed + course. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 35:13. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
