Praise the Name of your Lord, the Most High.
What does Surah al-A'laa say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 87:1 Praise the name of thy Lord the Most High. This is here because it is the instruction the surah opens on: "Praise the name of thy Lord, the most high" in Sale, "PRAISE the name of thy Lord THE MOST HIGH" in Rodwell and "Celebrated the name of thy Lord most High" in Palmer.
- 02 87:2 Who createth, then disposeth. This is here because it begins the list of what the one praised does, and Sale supplies an object the others do not: "Who hath created, and completely formed his creatures" in Sale and "Who hath created and balanced all things" in Rodwell, against "who created and fashioned" in Palmer and "Who createth, then disposeth" in Pickthall.
- 03 87:3 Who measureth, then guideth. This is here because the renderings differ most in length here: "And Who determineth them to various ends, and directeth them to attain the same" in Sale against "and who decreed and guided" in Palmer and "Who measureth, then guideth" in Pickthall.
- 04 87:4 Who bringeth forth the pasturage. This is here because it names what is brought out of the ground, and Sale alone says for whom: "and who produceth the pasture for cattle" in Sale, against "Who bringeth forth the pasture" in Rodwell and "Who bringeth forth the pasturage" in Pickthall.
- 05 87:5 Then turneth it to russet stubble. This is here because it is what becomes of that pasture: "and afterwards rendereth the same dry stubble of a dusky hue" in Sale, "And reduceth it to dusky stubble" in Rodwell, "Then turneth it to russet stubble" in Pickthall and "And then turns it into light debris" in Itani.
- 06 87:6 We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget. This is here because Rodwell alone names what is recited: "We will teach thee to recite the Koran, nor aught shalt thou forget" in Rodwell, against "We will enable thee to rehearse our revelations; and thou shalt not forget any part thereof" in Sale, "We will make thee recite, and thou shalt not forget" in Palmer and "We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget" in Pickthall, who names the hearer in his own brackets. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about reciting it - slowly, aloud, by heart?, with a different reason there.
- 07 87:7 Save that which Allah willeth. Lo! He knoweth the disclosed and that which still is hidden. This is here because it qualifies the promise just made and gives a reason for the qualification: "save what God pleases" in Palmer and "Save that which Allah willeth" in Pickthall, then "except what God shall please; for He knoweth that which is manifest, and that which is hidden" in Sale and "Verily, He knows the open and what is concealed" in Palmer.
- 08 87:8 And We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease. This is here because it states what will be made easy: "And We will facilitate unto thee the most easy way" in Sale, "And we will make easy to thee our easy ways" in Rodwell, "and we will send thee easily to ease" in Palmer and "And We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease" in Pickthall.
- 09 87:9 Therefor remind (men), for of use is the reminder. This is here because Sale alone makes the reminding conditional on its working: "Wherefore admonish thy people, if thy admonition shall be profitable unto them" in Sale, against "Warn, therefore, for the warning is profitable" in Rodwell, "wherefore remind, for, verily, the reminder is useful" in Palmer and "Therefor remind (men), for of use is the reminder" in Pickthall.
- 10 87:10 He will heed who feareth. This is here because it says who the reminder reaches, and Sale and Rodwell supply what is feared: "Whoso feareth God, he will be admonished" in Sale and "He that feareth God will receive the warning" in Rodwell, against "But he who fears will be mindful" in Palmer and "He will heed who feareth" in Pickthall.
- 11 87:11 But the most hapless will flout it. This is here because it says who turns away, and Sale alone says what he is: "But the most wretched unbeliever will turn away therefrom" in Sale, against "And the most reprobate only will turn aside from it" in Rodwell, "but the wretch will avoid it" in Palmer and "But the most hapless will flout it" in Pickthall.
- 12 87:12 He who will be flung to the great Fire. This is here because Sale alone names where the fire is: "who shall be cast to be broiled in the greater fire of hell" in Sale, against "Who shall be exposed to the terrible fire" in Rodwell, "he who will broil on the great fire" in Palmer and "He who will be flung to the great Fire" in Pickthall.
- 13 87:13 Wherein he will neither die nor live. This is here because it states the condition there as neither one thing nor the other: "wherein he shall not die, neither shall he live" in Sale, "and then therein shall neither die nor live" in Palmer and "Wherein he will neither die nor live" in Pickthall.
- 14 87:14 He is successful who groweth. This is here because the renderings do not agree on what does the purifying, and Pickthall does not read it as purifying at all: "Now hath he attained felicity who is purified by faith" in Sale and "Happy he who is purified by Islam" in Rodwell, against "Prosperous is he who purifies himself" in Palmer and "Successful is he who purifies himself" in Itani, and against "He is successful who groweth" in Pickthall.
- 15 87:15 And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth. This is here because it names the second thing that man does: "and who remembereth the name of his Lord, and prayeth" in Sale, "and remembers the name of his Lord and prays" in Palmer and "And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth" in Pickthall.
- 16 87:16 But ye prefer the life of the world. This is here because it states what is preferred instead: "But ye prefer this present life" in Sale, "but ye prefer the life of this world" in Palmer, "But ye prefer the life of the world" in Pickthall and "But you prefer the present life" in Itani.
- 17 87:17 Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting. This is here because it sets against that what the surah says is better: "Yet the life to come is better, and more durable" in Sale, "Though the life to come is better and more enduring" in Rodwell, "while the hereafter is better and more lasting" in Palmer and "Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting" in Pickthall.
- 18 87:18 Lo! This is in the former scrolls. This is here because it places what has just been said in older books, and the renderings name those books differently: "Verily this is written in the ancient books" in Sale, "This truly is in the Books of old" in Rodwell, "Verily, this was in the books of yore" in Palmer, "This is in the former scrolls" in Pickthall and "This is in the former scriptures" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about earlier prophets receiving scripture?, with a different reason there.
- 19 87:19 The Books of Abraham and Moses. This is here because it names whose books those are, and all four public-domain renderings agree: "the books of Abraham and Moses" in Sale, "The Books of Abraham and Moses" in Rodwell and "The Scriptures of Abraham and Moses" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about earlier prophets receiving scripture?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-A'laa is nineteen verses long. It opens on an instruction to praise, lists what the one praised does, promises the hearer that he will not forget what he is given, tells him to remind others, and ends by saying that this was in books already old.
87:1 gives the instruction: "Praise the name of thy Lord, the most high" in Sale, "PRAISE the name of thy Lord THE MOST HIGH" in Rodwell and "Celebrated the name of thy Lord most High" in Palmer. 87:2-5 then say what that Lord does, and Sale is the fullest at every step: "Who hath created, and completely formed his creatures" against Palmer's "who created and fashioned" and Rodwell's "Who hath created and balanced all things", then "And Who determineth them to various ends, and directeth them to attain the same" against the whole of Palmer's "and who decreed and guided" and Pickthall's "Who measureth, then guideth". The pasture is brought out and then dried: "and afterwards rendereth the same dry stubble of a dusky hue" in Sale, "Then turneth it to russet stubble" in Pickthall and "And then turns it into light debris" in Itani.
87:6-8 turn to the hearer, and Rodwell alone names what is recited: "We will teach thee to recite the Koran, nor aught shalt thou forget", where Sale has "We will enable thee to rehearse our revelations; and thou shalt not forget any part thereof", Palmer only "We will make thee recite, and thou shalt not forget", and Pickthall names the hearer in his own brackets in "We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget". The promise is then qualified - "save what God pleases" in Palmer, "Save that which Allah willeth" in Pickthall - and a reason given: "Verily, He knows the open and what is concealed" in Palmer. The study What does the Qur'an say about reciting it - slowly, aloud, by heart? carries 87:6 with its own reason.
87:9 is where the renderings differ most in what they commit to. Sale makes the reminding conditional on its working - "Wherefore admonish thy people, if thy admonition shall be profitable unto them" - where Rodwell states it flatly as "Warn, therefore, for the warning is profitable" and Palmer as "wherefore remind, for, verily, the reminder is useful". Who takes it and who does not follows at 87:10-13: "Whoso feareth God, he will be admonished" in Sale against "But he who fears will be mindful" in Palmer, then "But the most wretched unbeliever will turn away therefrom" in Sale, where Palmer has only "but the wretch will avoid it". Sale alone names where the fire is in "who shall be cast to be broiled in the greater fire of hell", and what happens there is "wherein he shall not die, neither shall he live".
87:14-15 say who does well, and the renderings do not agree on what purifies him: "Now hath he attained felicity who is purified by faith" in Sale and "Happy he who is purified by Islam" in Rodwell, where Palmer has "Prosperous is he who purifies himself" and Itani "Successful is he who purifies himself" - and Pickthall reads it as growth instead, in "He is successful who groweth". The rest is prayer: "and who remembereth the name of his Lord, and prayeth" in Sale.
87:16-17 set what is chosen against what is better, "But ye prefer this present life" in Sale against "Yet the life to come is better, and more durable". The surah closes at 87:18-19 by placing what has just been said in older books: "Verily this is written in the ancient books" in Sale, "This truly is in the Books of old" in Rodwell and "This is in the former scrolls" in Pickthall, named at 87:19 as "the books of Abraham and Moses" in Sale and "The Scriptures of Abraham and Moses" in Itani. The study What does the Qur'an say about earlier prophets receiving scripture? carries 87:18-19 with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say what the books of Abraham and Moses were, or whether anything of them survives, and it does not settle whether the reminding is made conditional or stated flatly - the renderings themselves divide on that. Resolving either needs a commentary or a scholarly history read against the Arabic: this study holds no in an edition whose usage rights can be verified - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. It holds no , occasion of revelation or biography either. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 87:1, widening across 19 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 19 passages, each with every cleared translation
19 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 87:1-19, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all nineteen verses of Surah al-A'laa, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
