This is in the former scriptures.
What does the Qur'an say about earlier prophets receiving scripture?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 87:18–19 Lo, this is in the former scrolls - THE BOOKS OF ABRAHAM AND MOSES. This passage names two figures as having books of their own, Abraham and Moses.
- 02 53:36–38 Or hath he not had news of what is IN THE SCROLLS OF MOSES, AND OF ABRAHAM WHO PAID HIS DEBT: THAT NO LADEN ONE SHALL BEAR ANOTHER'S LOAD. This passage reports something as being in an earlier book, and what it reports is a moral principle: that no laden one shall bear another’s load.
- 03 2:53 And when We gave unto Moses the Scripture AND THE CRITERION OF RIGHT AND WRONG, that ye might be led aright. This verse names two things given to Moses, and the second — the Criterion — is a word the Qur’an also uses of itself.
- 04 4:163 Lo, We inspire thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him, as We inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, AND AS WE IMPARTED UNTO DAVID THE PSALMS. This verse lists eleven prophets in one sentence and singles out David as the one given a book, the Psalms.
- 05 57:25 We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, AND REVEALED WITH THEM THE SCRIPTURE AND THE BALANCE, that mankind may observe right measure. This verse makes scripture-sent-with-messengers a general rule rather than a series of separate cases.
- 06 35:25 And if they deny thee, those before them also denied. Their messengers came unto them with clear proofs of God's Sovereignty, AND WITH THE PSALMS AND THE SCRIPTURE GIVING LIGHT. This verse names three kinds of earlier writing together: clear proofs, the Psalms, and the Scripture giving light.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur’an presents revelation as a recurring part of prophetic history, not something beginning with Muhammad. It repeatedly says that Moses received scripture, identifies the Torah and Gospel as earlier revelation, attributes Psalms to David (4:163; 17:55), and refers to the scrolls of Abraham and Moses (53:36–38; 87:18–19).
The text also gives a general principle: messengers were sent with clear proofs and scripture so that people might uphold justice (57:25). The moral continuity is sometimes made explicit. Qur’an 53:36–41 attributes to the scrolls of Moses and Abraham principles including individual responsibility and the relation between effort and outcome.
These references establish the Qur’an’s claim that God revealed guidance before the Qur’an. They do not establish that every prophet received a book, identify the complete contents of the lost scrolls, or answer every historical question about the formation of the biblical texts. AALAMIN should present named Qur’anic claims separately from later identifications and traditions.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 87:18–19, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

We sent Our messengers with the clear proofs, and We sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that humanity may uphold justice. We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that Allah may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty
We did send our apostles with manifest signs; and we did send down among you the Book and the balance, that men might stand by justice; and we sent down iron in which is both keen violence and advantages to men; and that God might know who helps Him and His apostles in secret; verily, God is strong and mighty
We have sent our apostles with the clear tokens, and we have caused the Book and the balance to descend with them, that men might observe fairness. And we have sent down IRON. Dire evil resideth in it, as well as advantage, to mankind! God would know who will assist Him and his apostle in secret. Verily, God is Powerful, Strong
We formerly sent our apostles with evident miracles and arguments; and We sent down with them the scriptures, and the balance, that men might observe justice: And We sent them down iron, wherein is mighty strength for war, and various advantages unto mankind: That God may know who assisteth him and his apostles in secret; for God is strong and mighty

That you may not sorrow over what eludes you, nor exult over what He has given you. God does not love the proud snob.
That ye grieve not for the sake of that which hath escaped you, nor yet exult because of that which hath been given. Allah loveth not all prideful boasters
That ye may not vex yourselves for what ye miss, nor be overjoyed at what He gives you; for God loves no arrogant boaster
Lest ye distress yourselves if good things escape you, and be over joyous for what falleth to your share. God loveth not the presumptuous, the boaster
And this is written lest ye immoderately grieve for the good which escapeth you, or rejoice for that which happeneth unto you; for God loveth no proud or vain-glorious person

Then We sent in their wake Our messengers, and followed up with Jesus son of Mary, and We gave him the Gospel, and instilled in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy. But as for the monasticism which they invented-We did not ordain it for them-only to seek God's approval. But they did not observe it with its due observance. So We gave those of them who believed their reward, but many of them are sinful.
Then We caused Our messengers to follow in their footsteps; and We caused Jesus, son of Mary, to follow, and gave him the Gospel, and placed compassion and mercy in the hearts of those who followed him. But monasticism they invented - We ordained it not for them - only seeking Allah's pleasure, and they observed it not with right observance. So We give those of them who believe their reward, but many of them are evil-livers
Then we followed up their footsteps with our apostles; and we followed them up with Jesus the son of Mary; and we gave him the gospel; and we placed in the hearts of those who followed him kindness and compassion.- But monkery, they invented it; we only prescribed to them the craving after the goodwill of God, and they observed it not with due observance. But we gave to those who believe amongst them their hire; though many amongst them were workers of abomination
Then we caused our apostles to follow in their footsteps; and we caused Jesus the son of Mary to follow them; and we gave him the Evangel, and we put into the hearts of those who followed him kindness and compassion: but as to the monastic life, they invented it themselves. The desire only of pleasing God did we prescribe to them, and this they observed not as it ought to have been observed: but to such of them as believed gave we their reward, though many of them were perverse
Afterwards We caused our apostles to succeed in their footsteps; and We caused Jesus the son of Mary to succeed them, and We gave him the gospel: And We put in the hearts of those who followed him, compassion and mercy: But as to the monastic state, they instituted the same -- We did not prescribe it to them -- only out of a desire to please God; yet they observed not the same as it ought truly to have been observed. And We gave unto such of them as believed, their reward: But many of them were wicked doers

Thou art but a warner

We sent you with the truth; a bearer of good news, and a warner. There is no community but a warner has passed through it.
Lo! We have sent thee with the Truth, a bearer of glad tidings and a warner; and there is not a nation but a warner hath passed among them
Verily, we have sent thee in truth a herald of glad tidings and a warner; and there is no nation but its warner has passed away with it
Verily we have sent thee with the truth; a bearer of good tidings and a warner; nor hath there been a people unvisited by its warner
Verily We have sent thee with truth, a bearer of good tidings, and a denouncer of threats. There hath been no nation, but a preacher hath in past times been conversant among them

Then I seized those who disbelieved-so how was My rejection?
Then seized I those who disbelieved, and how intense was My abhorrence
Then I seized those who misbelieved, and what a change it was
Then chastised I the unbelievers: and how great was my vengeance
Afterwards I chastised those who were unbelievers; and how severe was my vengeance

Have you not seen that God sends down water from the sky? With it We produce fruits of various colors. And in the mountains are streaks of white and red-varying in their hue-and pitch-black.
Hast thou not seen that Allah causeth water to fall from the sky, and We produce therewith fruit of divers hues; and among the hills are streaks white and red, of divers hues, and (others) raven-black
Dost thou not see that God has sent down from the heaven water, and has brought forth therewith fruits varied in hue, and on the mountains dykes, white and red, various in hue, and some intensely black
Seest thou not how that God sendeth down water from the Heaven, and that by it we cause the up-growth of fruits of varied hues, and that on the mountains are tracks of varied hues, white and red, and others are of a raven black
Dost thou not see that God sendeth down rain from heaven; and that We thereby produce fruits of various colours? In the mountains also there are some tracks white and red, of various colours; and others are of a deep black

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 87:18-19, 53:36-38, 2:53, 4:163, 57:25, 35:25, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - the + scrolls + of + abraham + and + moses; the + former + scriptures; we + gave + unto + moses + the + scripture; we + gave + the + psalms; scriptures + of + the + men + of + old. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 17 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:87 - near-identical to 2:53; carried by the study Is Jesus called 'Messiah' and 'Word of God' in the Qur'an?; 4:153 - a demand for a sign; 6:154 - near-identical; 11:110 - near-identical, with the dispute clause; 17:2 - near-identical; 17:55 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about David and the Psalms?; 20:133 - on-topic; 23:49 - near-identical; 25:35 - near-identical; 26:196 - carried by the study Does the Qur'an say the Prophet was foretold by earlier prophets?; 28:43 - near-identical; 29:47 - about this Book; 32:23 - near-identical; 34:10 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about David and the Psalms?; 40:53 - near-identical; 40:70 - about denial; 41:45 - near-identical.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
