What does Surah al-Bayyina say - and who does it call the worst and the best of creatures?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 98:1–8 THOSE WHO DISBELIEVED AMONG THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK AND THE IDOLATERS WERE NOT TO BE PARTED UNTIL THE CLEAR EVIDENCE CAME TO THEM. In as ONE PASSAGE because this is a whole-surah study and the surah argues in one movement: the evidence arrives (98:1-3), the division follows it (98:4), what was commanded is named (98:5), and the two ends are set against each other (98:6-8). Split it and the sequence the surah insists on - division AFTER evidence - stops being visible, and 98:6 comes loose from the partitive in 98:1 that scopes it. Carried entire for that reason. Divergence bands 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 3, 2, 1 of 5, the disputed stretch falling on the description of the evidence rather than on the judgement. 98:6 and 98:7 are the only two verses in the corpus carrying ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ. NOT carried by any other study: surah 98 has no anchor in the live corpus, which is why this study exists.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Eight verses, built on a single word the surah is named for: ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ, the clear evidence. It appears twice, at 98:1 and 98:4, and both times it is the hinge of a sentence about what happened AFTER it arrived.

THE SEQUENCE THE SURAH INSISTS ON. 98:1 says that those who disbelieved among the people of the Book and the idolaters were not to be parted from what they were on until the clear evidence came to them. 98:2 and 98:3 say what that evidence was: a messenger from God, reciting purified pages, and in them upright writings. Then 98:4 turns it round on وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ - "Nor did those who were given the Book divide into sects", in Palmer 1880 - and says that they did not split EXCEPT AFTER the clear evidence had come to them. The division follows the evidence; it does not precede it. That ordering is stated twice in four verses and is the surah's central claim about the past.

WHAT WAS COMMANDED, BY THE SURAH'S OWN ACCOUNT. 98:5 is unusually plain about it: they were commanded nothing except to worship God, making religion sincerely His, حُنَفَآءَ - upright, inclining away from other worship - and to establish the prayer and give the alms. And that, the verse ends, is the religion of the right. It is a short list, and the surah presents it as the whole of what was asked.

THE PAIR AT THE END, AND THE WORD THAT MAKES IT. 98:6 places those who disbelieved among the people of the Book and the idolaters in the fire of hell, abiding, and calls them شَرُّ ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ. 98:7 places those who believed and did righteous deeds opposite them and calls them خَيْرُ ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ. ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ occurs in exactly two verses of the 6,236 - these two - so the surah does not borrow this pairing from anywhere else in the book. It coins it here and uses it once each way.

THE SCOPE OF 98:6 IS IN THE VERSE, AND IT IS EASY TO LOSE. The subject is not "the people of the Book". It is ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ - those who disbelieved FROM AMONG the people of the Book and the idolaters. مِنْ is partitive: it takes a part of a group, not the group. All five cleared renderings keep it, and none of them drops it: "The unbelievers among those to whom the scriptures were given" (Sale 1734), "the unbelievers among the people of the Book" (Rodwell 1861), "those who disbelieve amongst the people of the Book" (Palmer 1880), "those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture" (Pickthall 1930), "Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture" (Itani 2012). Palmer inverts the phrase - "Those of the people of the Book and the idolaters who misbelieve" - and the partitive survives the inversion. A reader who meets 98:6 quoted without those three or four words is reading a different sentence from the one the surah contains. This study states the scope because the text states it, not to soften the verse: what remains is still a statement that the disbelieving part of both groups abides in the fire.

WHOM THE SURAH DOES NOT NAME. It does not enumerate the people of the Book. The words for Jews and for Christians occur in the corpus - 8 verses and 21 verses respectively - and NEITHER OCCURS ANYWHERE IN SURAH 98. It does not name the messenger of 98:2. It does not say which community divided, when it divided, or what it divided over. It gives no occasion. Identifying any of that is a matter for sources the estate does not hold, and this study leaves all five blanks open rather than filling them from elsewhere. The study Who are the 'People of the Book' in the Qur'an? takes up who the phrase covers across the corpus as a whole, and the study What common ground does the Qur'an offer the People of the Book? takes up what the book offers that group; this study is about surah 98 and stops at its eight verses.

WHERE THE RENDERINGS PART COMPANY. The estate's derived divergence measure runs 1 to 5 and gives 98:1 band 4, then 98:2, 98:3, 98:4 and 98:5 all band 5 - the middle of this surah is among the most disputed stretches the measure knows - then 98:6 band 3, 98:7 band 2 and 98:8 band 1. The disagreement is concentrated in the description of the evidence, not in the judgement at the end. 98:3 is the sharpest: فِيهَا كُتُبٌ قَيِّمَةٌ is "wherein are contained right discourses" (Sale), "wherein are true Scriptures" (Rodwell), "wherein are right scriptures" (Palmer), "Containing correct scriptures" (Pickthall) and "In them are valuable writings" (Itani). Discourses, true Scriptures, right scriptures, correct scriptures, valuable writings: the five are rendering the same three words five ways, and the study reports the spread rather than choosing.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

WHAT THIS STUDY DOES NOT ANSWER, and the layer that would. Who the messenger of 98:2 is; which community 98:4 describes and what it divided over; when any of it happened; and on what occasion the surah was given. Each needs sira, or . The sources register records the whole traditional tier as unavailable - the OpenITI corpus pending request, al-Maktaba al-Shamela closed and unusable, sunnah.com unresolved, al-Wahidi's Asbab al-Nuzul in English pending request, none ingest-permitted - and the occasions table holds 0 rows for the whole corpus. These are absences with a named cause, not omissions.

What this rests on

Opens with 98:1–8.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

98:7 In verità quelli che hanno creduto e hanno fatto il bene, quelli sono, invece, il meglio del Creato;

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

The surah's own text and the five cleared renderings of it, read in full, and nothing else.

THE SERVED ARABIC is Tanzil Uthmani 1.1 (Tanzil Qur'an text, Uthmani, Version 1.1; licence CC BY 3.0), the text this platform serves. Every Arabic phrase quoted in the synthesis above is a substring of the served text at the verse cited, checked character by character on 2026-09-08.

The five cleared translations, in full at 98:1-8, and no others: Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 and Itani 2012. All five render all eight verses; none of surah 98 falls in Palmer's seven missing verses. Every English phrase attributed to a translator above is quoted from that translator's row in the translations table at the verse cited.

THE EDITOR'S PLAIN READING, quoted rather than re-derived. The plain-reading layer carries a signed surah-level reading of 98: "Eight verses turning on a clear evidence that came - the evidence this surah is named for - after which those who had been given the Book divided among themselves. It says that what was commanded was worship, prayer and alms, and it ends by setting the worst of creatures against the best." The synthesis above states the same content and is consistent with it by design, under the one-claim-one-wording practice. It goes further only on the partitive, the uniqueness of ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ and the rendering spread, all three of which are measured here.

THE READING OF حُنَفَآءَ IS THE EDITOR'S, AND IS MARKED AS SUCH. "Upright, inclining away from other worship" is a plain reading offered in the Editor's own voice, in the manner of the plain-reading layer, and it is not attributed to a lexicon: the estate holds no lexicon source of any kind - the sources register has no lexicon row, cleared or otherwise. It is constrained by the five renderings at 98:5, which give "being orthodox" (Sale), "sound in faith" (Rodwell), "as Hanifs" (Palmer), "as men by nature upright" (Pickthall) and "devoting their faith to Him alone" (Itani), and by the word's only other occurrence in the corpus, 22:31, where it stands next to A reader who wants the word settled rather than sketched needs a lexicon, and the estate does not have one.

WHERE THE NUMBERS COME FROM. Every count is a query against the live tables on 2026-09-08, none is quoted from a source: 8 verses in surah 98 (the surah verse counts); Medinan, position 100 of 114 in the one ordering the platform holds (the recorded place of revelation, the surah revelation positions - and that ordering is unnamed, as the study In what order was the Qur'an revealed, and why is that not the order of the book? sets out); ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ in exactly 2 verses of 6,236, both in this surah; ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ in 2 verses, 98:1 and 98:4; مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ in 14 verses, two of them here; حُنَفَآءَ in 2 verses, 22:31 and 98:5; the word for Jews in 8 verses and for Christians in 21, none in surah 98; divergence bands 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 3, 2, 1 across 98:1-8 (the divergence scores).

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
