Say, "O People of the Book, come to terms common between us and you: that we worship none but God, and that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us takes others as lords besides God." And if they turn away, say, "Bear witness that we have submitted."
What common ground does the Qur'an offer the People of the Book?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:64 Say: O People of the Scripture, COME TO AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN US AND YOU: THAT WE SHALL WORSHIP NONE BUT GOD, AND THAT WE SHALL ASCRIBE NO PARTNER UNTO HIM, AND THAT NONE OF US SHALL TAKE OTHERS FOR LORDS BESIDE GOD. And if they turn away, then say: bear witness that we are they who have surrendered. In because it is the invitation itself, because the three terms are stated as shared rather than as demands, and because the third of them - none of us taking others as lords - cuts in every direction including the speaker's.
- 02 29:46 And ARGUE NOT WITH THE PEOPLE OF THE SCRIPTURE UNLESS IT BE IN A WAY THAT IS BETTER, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: WE BELIEVE IN THAT WHICH HATH BEEN REVEALED UNTO US AND REVEALED UNTO YOU; OUR GOD AND YOUR GOD IS ONE, and unto Him we surrender. In because it supplies the words to say and they are a statement of shared belief and one God. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about disputing with others 'in the best way'?, with a different reason there.
- 03 2:136 Say: we believe in God and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. WE MAKE NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN ANY OF THEM, and unto Him we have surrendered. In because it names the shared inheritance specifically. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the prophets being one brotherhood?, with a different reason there.
- 04 3:113–115 THEY ARE NOT ALL ALIKE. Of the People of the Scripture there is a staunch community who recite the revelations of God in the night season, falling prostrate... And whatever good they do, they will not be denied the meed thereof. In as ONE PASSAGE because the common ground includes an acknowledgement of the other party's piety. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about Jews? and Who are the 'People of the Book' in the Qur'an?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse carries the invitation, and its wording is more even-handed than its reputation.
3:64: COME TO AN AGREEMENT - a word common, a fair statement, a just word, depending on the rendering - BETWEEN US AND YOU. And then three terms:
That we worship none but God. That we ascribe no partner to Him. And - the third, which is the one that makes the verse remarkable - THAT NONE OF US SHALL TAKE OTHERS FOR LORDS BESIDE GOD.
That third clause is not addressed outward. NONE OF US. It applies to the speaker's community as much as to the addressee, and it is the same charge 9:31 brings against taking rabbis and monks as lords - which the study What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an? carries.
The verse ends without coercion: IF THEY TURN AWAY, THEN SAY: BEAR WITNESS THAT WE HAVE SURRENDERED. The response to refusal is a declaration of one's own position.
29:46 supplies the manner and the words: argue with them ONLY IN A WAY THAT IS BETTER, and say WE BELIEVE IN WHAT WAS REVEALED TO US AND REVEALED TO YOU; OUR GOD AND YOUR GOD IS ONE.
2:136 spells out the shared inheritance by name - Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the tribes, Moses, Jesus - and adds WE MAKE NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN ANY OF THEM.
And 3:113 concedes something about the other party rather than asking anything of them: they are not all alike, and there is among them a community that prays at night, and whatever good they do will not be denied them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:64, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Likewise, We revealed to you the Scripture. Those to whom We gave the Scripture believe in it, and some of these believe in it. None renounce Our communications except the disbelievers.
In like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture, and those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny Our revelations save the disbelievers
Thus did we send down to thee the Book; and every one to whom we have given the Book believes therein. But these will not believe therein; though none gainsay our signs except the misbelievers

You did not read any scripture before this, nor did you write it down with your right hand; otherwise the falsifiers would have doubted.
And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood
Thou couldst not recite before this any book, nor write it with thy right hand, for in that case those who deem it vain would have doubted
Thou didst not recite any book (of revelation) before it: with that right hand of thine thou didst not transcribe one: else might they who treat it as a vain thing have justly doubted
Thou couldest not read any book before this; neither couldest thou write it with thy right hand: Then had the gainsayers justly doubted of the divine original thereof

And if they believe in the like of that which ye believe, then are they rightly guided. But if they turn away, then are they in schism, and Allah will suffice thee (for defence) against them. He is the Hearer, the Knower
If they believe in that in which ye believe, then are they guided; but if they turn back, then are they only in a schism, and God will suffice thee against them, for He both hears and knows
If therefore they believe even as ye believe, then have they true guidance; but if they turn back, then do they cut themselves off from you: and God will suffice to protect thee against them, for He is the Hearer, the Knower
Now if they believe according to what ye believe, they are surely directed, but if they turn back, they are in schism. God shall support thee against them, for he is the hearer, the wise

They shall be humiliated wherever they are encountered, except through a rope from God, and a rope from the people; and they incurred wrath from God, and were stricken with misery. That is because they rejected God's revelations, and killed the prophets unjustly. That is because they rebelled and committed aggression.
Ignominy shall be their portion wheresoever they are found save (where they grasp) a rope from Allah and a rope from men. They have incurred anger from their Lord, and wretchedness is laid upon them. That is because they used to disbelieve the revelations of Allah, and slew the prophets wrongfully. That is because they were rebellious and used to transgress
They are smitten with abasement wherever they be found, save for the rope of God and the rope of man; and they draw on themselves wrath from God. They are smitten, too, with poverty; that is because they did disbelieve in God's signs, and kill the prophets undeservedly. That is because they did rebel and did transgress
Shame shall be stamped upon them wherever found, unless they ally them with God and men! And the wrath of God will they incur, and poverty shall be stamped upon them! This - for that they believed not in the signs of God, and slew the prophets unjustly: This - because they rebelled, and became transgressors
They are smitten with vileness wheresoever they are found; unless they obtain security by entering into a treaty with God, and a treaty with men: And they draw on themselves indignation from God, and they are afflicted with poverty. This they suffer, because they disbelieved the signs of God, and slew the prophets unjustly; this, because they were rebellious, and transgressed

The parable of what they spend in this worldly life is that of a frosty wind that strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged their souls, and destroys it. God did not wrong them, but they wronged their own selves.
The likeness of that which they spend in this life of the world is as the likeness of a biting, icy wind which smiteth the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves, and devastateth it. Allah wronged them not, but they do wrong themselves
The likeness of what they expend in this life of the world, is as the likeness of wind wherein is a cold blast that falls upon a people's tilth who have wronged themselves and destroys it. It is not God who wrongs them, but it is themselves they wrong
The alms which they bestow in this present life, are like a freezing wind, which falleth upon and destroyeth the cornfields of a people who have been to themselves unjust. God doeth them no injustice, but to themselves are they unjust
The likeness of that which they lay out in this present life, is as a wind wherein there is a scorching cold: It falleth on the standing corn of those men who have injured their own souls, and destroyeth it. And God dealeth not unjustly with them; but they injure their own souls
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:64, 29:46, 2:136, 3:113-115, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - come + to + an + agreement + between + us + and + you; a + word + common; we + believe + in + that + which + hath + been + revealed + unto + us + and + revealed + unto + you; our + god + and + your + god + is + one. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
