By the sky with the constellations.
What does Surah al-Burooj say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 85:1 By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars. This is here because it opens the surah and the renderings do not agree on what the sky holds: "By the heaven adorned with signs" in Sale, "BY the star-bespangled Heaven" in Rodwell, "By the heaven with its zodiacal signs" in Palmer, "By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars" in Pickthall and "By the sky with the constellations" in Itani.
- 02 85:2 And by the Promised Day. This is here because Sale alone names what the promised day is for: "by the promised day of judgment" in Sale, against "By the promised Day" in Rodwell, "And the promised day" in Palmer and "And by the Promised Day" in Pickthall.
- 03 85:3 And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony. This is here because it is the third oath and it names neither party: "by the witness, and the witnessed" in Sale, "And the witness and the witnessed" in Palmer and "And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony" in Pickthall.
- 04 85:4 (Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch. This is here because the renderings disagree over what happened to the people of the pit: "The fellows of the pit were slain" in Palmer, against "cursed were the contrivers of the pit" in Sale and "Cursed the masters of the trench" in Rodwell, with "(Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch" in Pickthall, in his own brackets, and "Destroyed were the People of the Trench" in Itani.
- 05 85:5 Of the fuel-fed fire. This is here because it says what was in the pit: "of fire supplied with fuel" in Sale, "Of the fuel-fed fire" in Rodwell, "And the fire with its kindling" in Palmer and "The fire supplied with fuel" in Itani.
- 06 85:6 When they sat by it. This is here because it places the people who did it around that fire: "when they sat round the same" in Sale, "When they sat around it" in Rodwell, "When they sat over it" in Palmer and "When they sat by it" in Pickthall.
- 07 85:7 And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers. This is here because it says they watched what was done: "and were witnesses of what they did against the true believers" in Sale, "Witnesses of what they inflicted on the believers" in Rodwell, "And witnessed the while what they were doing with those who believed" in Palmer and "And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers" in Pickthall.
- 08 85:8 They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise. This is here because it gives the only reason, and every rendering gives the same one: "And they afflicted them for no other reason, but because they believed in the mighty, the glorious God" in Sale, "Nor did they torment them but for their faith in God, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy" in Rodwell, "They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise" in Pickthall and "They begrudged them only because they believed in God the Almighty, the Praiseworthy" in Itani.
- 09 85:9 Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness. This is here because it continues that naming into what is owned and what is seen: "unto whom belongeth the kingdom of heaven and earth: And God is witness of all things" in Sale, "His the kingdom of the Heavens and of the Earth; and God is the witness of everything" in Rodwell and "Whose is the kingdoms of the heavens and the earth; For God is witness over all" in Palmer.
- 10 85:10 Lo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning. This is here because the renderings differ most here over what was done to the believers: "Verily for those who persecute the true believers of either sex, and afterwards repent not, is prepared the torment of hell; and they shall suffer the pain of burning" in Sale and "they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning" in Pickthall, against "Verily, those who vexed the believers, men and women, and repented not, doth the torment of Hell, and the torment of the burning, await" in Rodwell, "Verily, those who make trial of the believers, men and women, and then do not repent, for them is the torment of hell, and for them is the torment of the burning" in Palmer and "Those who tempt the believers, men and women, then do not repent" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about sincere repentance (tawba)?, with a different reason there.
- 11 85:11 Lo! those who believe and do good works, theirs will be Gardens underneath which rivers flow. That is the Great Success. This is here because it is the other outcome, set directly against the one before it: "But for those who believe, and do that which is right, are destined gardens beneath which rivers flow" in Sale, "But for those who shall have believed and done the things that be right, are the Gardens beneath whose shades the rivers flow" in Rodwell and "Those who believe and do righteous deeds will have Gardens beneath which rivers flow" in Itani.
- 12 85:12 Lo! the punishment of thy Lord is stern. This is here because the renderings name what comes from the Lord differently: "Verily the vengeance of thy Lord is severe" in Sale, "Verily, right terrible will be thy Lord's vengeance" in Rodwell, "Verily, the violence of thy Lord is keen" in Palmer, "the punishment of thy Lord is stern" in Pickthall and "The onslaught of your Lord is severe" in Itani.
- 13 85:13 Lo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth. This is here because it states a beginning and a returning in the same breath: "He createth, and He restoreth to life" in Sale, "He it is who produceth all things, and causeth them to return" in Rodwell, "Verily, He produces and returns" in Palmer and "It is He who begins and repeats" in Itani.
- 14 85:14 And He is the Forgiving, the Loving. This is here because it names forgiveness and love immediately after the severity: "He is inclined to forgive, and gracious" in Sale, "And is He the Indulgent, the Loving" in Rodwell, "and He is the forgiving, the loving" in Palmer and "And He is the Forgiving, the Loving" in Pickthall.
- 15 85:15 Lord of the Throne of Glory. This is here because it names the throne, and the renderings attach the glory differently: "The possessor of the glorious throne" in Sale and "the Lord of the glorious throne" in Palmer, against "Lord of the Throne of Glory" in Pickthall.
- 16 85:16 Doer of what He will. This is here because it states the reach of that will without qualification: "who effecteth that which He pleaseth" in Sale, "Worker of that he willeth" in Rodwell, "the doer of what He will" in Palmer and "Doer of what He will" in Pickthall.
- 17 85:17 Hath there come unto thee the story of the hosts. This is here because it turns from the pit to an older story the hearer may know: "Hath not the story of the hosts" in Sale, "Hath not the story reached thee of the hosts" in Rodwell, "Has there come to thee the story of the hosts" in Palmer and "Hath there come unto thee the story of the hosts" in Pickthall.
- 18 85:18 Of Pharaoh and (the tribe of) Thamud. This is here because it names the two, and Pickthall alone marks one of them as a tribe: "of Pharaoh, and of Thamud, reached thee" in Sale, "Of Pharaoh and Themoud" in Rodwell and "of Pharaoh and Thamud" in Palmer, against "Of Pharaoh and (the tribe of) Thamud" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 19 85:19 Nay, but those who disbelieve live in denial. This is here because it says the denial continues anyway, and Sale alone names what is denied: "Yet the unbelievers cease not to accuse the divine revelations of falsehood" in Sale, against "Nay, but those who disbelieve live in denial" in Pickthall and "In fact, those who disbelieve are in denial" in Itani.
- 20 85:20 And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them. This is here because Sale alone says what the encompassing prevents: "But God encompasseth them behind, that they cannot escape" in Sale, against "But God surroundeth them from behind" in Rodwell, "but God is behind them - encompassing" in Palmer and "And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them" in Pickthall.
- 21 85:21 Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an. This is here because it names the book itself, and Sale alone says what is being rejected: "Verily that which they reject is a glorious Koran" in Sale, against "Yet it is a glorious Koran" in Rodwell, "Nay, it is a glorious Koran" in Palmer, "Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an" in Pickthall and "In fact, it is a Glorious Quran" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Preserved Tablet?, with a different reason there.
- 22 85:22 On a guarded tablet. This is here because it closes the surah on where that book is, and Sale alone says the tablet holds the original and is in heaven: "the original whereof is written in a table kept in heaven" in Sale, against "Written on the preserved Table" in Rodwell, "in a preserved tablet" in Palmer, "On a guarded tablet" in Pickthall and "In a Preserved Tablet" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Preserved Tablet?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Burooj runs from 85:1 to 85:22. It opens with oaths by the sky and a day, tells of people who were killed in a pit of fire for believing, states what awaits those who did it, and closes on where the Qur'an is kept.
The oaths run at 85:1-3, and the renderings do not agree on what is in the sky: "By the heaven adorned with signs" in Sale, "BY the star-bespangled Heaven" in Rodwell, "By the heaven with its zodiacal signs" in Palmer, "By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars" in Pickthall and "By the sky with the constellations" in Itani. At 85:2 Sale alone names what the day is for, in "by the promised day of judgment", where Rodwell has only "By the promised Day".
85:4-9 tell what happened, and the renderings disagree over whether the people of the pit were killed or cursed: "The fellows of the pit were slain" in Palmer, against "cursed were the contrivers of the pit" in Sale and "Cursed the masters of the trench" in Rodwell, with "(Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch" in Pickthall, in his own brackets, and "Destroyed were the People of the Trench" in Itani. The fire is "of fire supplied with fuel" in Sale, those responsible are placed around it in "when they sat round the same" in Sale, and they watched: "and were witnesses of what they did against the true believers" in Sale. 85:8 gives the reason, and every rendering gives the same one - "They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise" in Pickthall - followed at 85:9 by "unto whom belongeth the kingdom of heaven and earth: And God is witness of all things" in Sale.
85:10 is the longest verse of the surah and the one where the renderings diverge most in what was done. Sale and Pickthall read it as persecution - "Verily for those who persecute the true believers of either sex, and afterwards repent not, is prepared the torment of hell; and they shall suffer the pain of burning" in Sale - where Rodwell has "Verily, those who vexed the believers, men and women, and repented not, doth the torment of Hell, and the torment of the burning, await", Palmer "Verily, those who make trial of the believers, men and women, and then do not repent, for them is the torment of hell, and for them is the torment of the burning", and Itani "Those who tempt the believers, men and women, then do not repent". The study What does the Qur'an say about sincere repentance (tawba)? carries 85:10 with its own reason. Against that, 85:11 sets "But for those who believe, and do that which is right, are destined gardens beneath which rivers flow" in Sale.
85:12-16 describe the one who does this, and what comes from the Lord is read differently - "Verily the vengeance of thy Lord is severe" in Sale, "Verily, right terrible will be thy Lord's vengeance" in Rodwell, "Verily, the violence of thy Lord is keen" in Palmer and "the punishment of thy Lord is stern" in Pickthall - and then He is named as forgiving and loving in all of them: "and He is the forgiving, the loving" in Palmer.
85:17-20 ask whether the hearer knows an older story, and name it: "Hath not the story of the hosts" in Sale, of "of Pharaoh, and of Thamud, reached thee". Denial continues anyway - "Yet the unbelievers cease not to accuse the divine revelations of falsehood" in Sale, "In fact, those who disbelieve are in denial" in Itani - and Sale alone says what the encompassing prevents: "But God encompasseth them behind, that they cannot escape".
The surah closes at 85:21-22 on the book and where it is kept. It is "Verily that which they reject is a glorious Koran" in Sale and "Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an" in Pickthall, kept "in a preserved tablet" in Palmer, "On a guarded tablet" in Pickthall and "In a Preserved Tablet" in Itani - where Sale alone says that what is on the tablet is the original and that the tablet is in heaven: "the original whereof is written in a table kept in heaven". The study What does the Qur'an say about the Preserved Tablet? carries 85:21-22 with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say who the people of the pit were, where this happened or when, and it does not settle whether the surah says they were killed or cursed - the renderings themselves divide on that. Naming them needs a history, an occasion of revelation or a biography, and this study holds none of those in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 85:1, widening across 22 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 22 passages, each with every cleared translation

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

DIN 31635wallāhu min warāʾihim muḥīṭun
The translators word this verse differently
And God encloses them from beyond.
And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them
but God is behind them - encompassing
But God surroundeth them from behind
But God encompasseth them behind, that they cannot escape
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ
Easy-read (simplified)bal huwa qur'aanun majeed
DIN 31635bal huwa qurʾānun maǧīdun
In fact, it is a Glorious Quran.
Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an
Nay, it is a glorious Koran
Yet it is a glorious Koran
Verily that which they reject is a glorious Koran
85:22 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 85:1-22, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all of Surah al-Burooj from 85:1 to 85:22, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
