In fact, it is a Glorious Quran.
What does the Qur'an say about the Preserved Tablet?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 85:21–22 Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an, ON A GUARDED TABLET. In as ONE PASSAGE because the phrase the question names occurs here and nowhere else, and 85:21 is needed to show what is said to be on it.
- 02 56:77–78 That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an, IN A BOOK KEPT HIDDEN. In as ONE PASSAGE because it makes the same claim with a different noun, which is how a reader can see that the idea is not tied to the word tablet.
- 03 27:75 And there is nothing hidden in the heaven or the earth but it is in A CLEAR RECORD. In because it widens the contents from scripture to everything, which is the second and much larger claim made in this area.
- 04 10:61 Not an atom's weight in the earth or in the sky escapeth your Lord, nor what is less than that or greater, but it is IN A CLEAR RECORD. This verse says nothing escapes the Lord, not an atom's weight in the earth or the sky, nor anything smaller or greater, and that all of it is in a clear record.
- 05 6:59 And with Him are the keys of the Invisible ... not a leaf falleth but He knoweth it, nor a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor aught green or withered, but it is IN A CLEAR RECORD. In because it is the fullest form of the universal register and ends on the same phrase. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about believing in the unseen (al-ghayb)?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The phrase the question asks about occurs ONCE. Everything else is built from related expressions, and a reader should be able to see the joins.
85:22 is the verse: a glorious Qur'an, ON A GUARDED TABLET - or a preserved tablet, depending on the rendering. That is the sole occurrence of the expression, and what it says is about the QUR'AN, not about the world.
56:78 makes the same claim without the word: a noble Qur'an, IN A BOOK KEPT HIDDEN. So the idea that the scripture exists in a protected original is stated twice, in two different nouns.
Then there is a second and much larger claim, made in different language again: that everything is written down somewhere. 27:75 - nothing hidden in heaven or earth but it is in a clear record. 10:61 - not an atom's weight, nor less, nor greater. 6:59 - not a falling leaf, not a grain in the dark of the earth, nothing green or withered.
Whether these two are the SAME thing - a single tablet holding both the scripture and the record of everything - is not stated anywhere in the text. The four renderings use different words in the two contexts. Joining them is an interpretive step, and the very large picture familiar from later literature, in which the Preserved Tablet contains all decrees from before creation, is built on that step plus . No hadith collection and no has cleared the rights audit, so neither can be reported here.
What can be said: the Qur'an says of itself that it is on a guarded tablet, and says separately and repeatedly that everything is in a clear record. The individual's own book of deeds, which is a third thing again, is carried by What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 85:21–22, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 85:21-22, 56:77-78, 27:75, 10:61, 6:59, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - preserved + tablet; guarded + tablet; tablet; book + preserved; hidden + book. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 3:119 - 'the Book' as revelation; 5:15 - revelation and its concealment; 34:3 - near-identical to 10:61, which is kept; also left out of What does the Qur'an say about the signs of the Last Hour?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 10:61, a note that the verse had been taken out of two other studies was removed; neither of those studies carries it. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
