O you who believe! Repent to God with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remit your sins, and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the Day when God will not disappoint the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light streaming before them, and to their right, they will say, "Our Lord, complete our light for us, and forgive us; You are capable of all things."
What does the Qur'an say about sincere repentance (tawba)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 66:8 O ye who believe! Turn unto Allah in sincere repentance! This is here because it is the verse this question's phrase is found in, an instruction addressed to those who believe: of the four public-domain renderings this study was selected from, Sale, Palmer and Pickthall have "sincere repentance", and Rodwell has "the turning of true penitence". ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?, What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again?, What does the Qur'an say about good deeds wiping out bad ones?, What does the Qur'an say about deeds becoming light before a person on the Day of Judgment? and What is the prayer 'complete for us our light'?, with different reasons there.
- 02 19:60 Save him who shall repent and believe and do right. Such will enter the Garden, and they will not be wronged in aught. This is here because it is the first, in the order of the book, of four verses carried here - with 20:82, 25:70 and 28:67 - where the one who repents is also the one who believes and does right, in that order: Pickthall has "repent and believe and do right" here and at 28:67.
- 03 20:82 And lo! verily I am Forgiving toward him who repenteth and believeth and doeth good, and afterward walketh aright. This is here because it has the same three and a fourth after them: "and afterward walketh aright" in Pickthall, "and then is guided" in Palmer and "and then yieldeth to guidance" in Rodwell, where Sale has "and who shall be rightly directed".
- 04 25:70–71 Save him who repenteth and believeth and doth righteous work... And whosoever repenteth and doeth good, he verily repenteth toward Allah with true repentance. Carried as one passage because 25:71 speaks of the same turning a second time and gives the turning itself a qualifier: "true repentance" in Pickthall, "an acceptable conversion" in Sale and "a true conversion" in Rodwell, where Palmer has "he turns again to God repentant", with none. Its first verse is ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome? and What does the Qur'an say about good deeds wiping out bad ones?, with different reasons there.
- 05 28:67 But as for him who shall repent and believe and do right, he haply may be one of the successful. This is here because it is the last, in the order of the book, of the four verses carried here where the one who repents is also the one who believes and does right.
- 06 16:119 ...afterward repent and amend - lo! (for them) thy Lord is afterward indeed Forgiving, Merciful. This is here because it sets a second act of a different kind beside the turning: "repent and amend" in Sale and Pickthall, "repented and amended" in Rodwell and "repented after that and done aright" in Palmer.
- 07 4:17–18 Forgiveness is only incumbent on Allah toward those who do evil in ignorance (and) then turn quickly (in repentance) to Allah... The forgiveness is not for those who do ill-deeds until, when death attendeth upon one of them, he saith: Lo! I repent now. Carried as one passage because 4:17 puts the wrong first and the turning after it, and 4:18 sets beside that turning the words "Lo! I repent now", spoken when death has come. The words "(in repentance)" at 4:17 are Pickthall's own addition, in his brackets; Sale has "repent speedily" and Rodwell "turn speedily unto Him". ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again?, What does the Qur'an say about repenting at the point of death? and What does the Qur'an say about knowingly persisting in sin?, and its second verse also by What does the Qur'an say about a good end (husn al-khatima)? and What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with different reasons there.
- 08 85:10 Lo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning. This is here because it has the same word from the other side: those it names are named by what they did and by not repenting after it - "afterwards repent not" in Sale, "repented not" in Rodwell and "then do not repent" in Palmer.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
In these verses, repentance is shown by what the verses set beside it.
In four of them - 19:60, 20:82, 25:70 and 28:67 - the one who repents is also the one who believes and does right, in that order each time; in Pickthall's words at 19:60 and 28:67, "repent and believe and do right". All five renderings keep that order in all four verses. 20:82 adds a fourth after them, and four of the renderings mark it as coming after: "and then" in Rodwell, Palmer and Itani, "and afterward" in Pickthall. Sale joins it with "and who shall be rightly directed".
16:119 sets a different act beside the turning: "afterward repent and amend", in Pickthall's words. Sale also has "repent and amend", and Itani "repent afterwards and reform".
Twice the turning itself is given a qualifier. 66:8 is an instruction to those who believe, and it is where the question's phrase is found: Sale, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani all have "sincere repentance", and Rodwell "the turning of true penitence". At 25:71, which follows 25:70, whoever repents and does good turns to God - with "true repentance" in Pickthall, "an acceptable conversion" in Sale and "a true conversion" in Rodwell. Palmer and Itani give that turning no qualifier. The renderings do not agree on what the phrase adds, and this study does not choose between them.
4:17-18 puts the wrong first and the turning after it, and sets beside that turning the words "Lo! I repent now", spoken when death has come. 85:10 has the same word from the other side: those who persecute "believing men and believing women and repent not".
What these verses do not give is a list of steps set out as a procedure, or any statement of how the sincerity asked for in 66:8 is known. Whether and how often God accepts repentance is taken up by What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again?, a turning left until death by What does the Qur'an say about repenting at the point of death?, and what repentance changes by What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 66:8, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

If two men among you commit it, punish them both. But if they repent and reform, leave them alone. God is Redeemer, Full of Mercy.
And as for the two of you who are guilty thereof, punish them both. And if they repent and improve, then let them be. Lo! Allah is ever relenting, Merciful

O you who believe! It is not permitted for you to inherit women against their will. And do not coerce them in order to take away some of what you had given them, unless they commit a proven adultery. And live with them in kindness. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which God has placed much good.
O ye who believe! It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the women (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness. But consort with them in kindness, for if ye hate them it may happen that ye hate a thing wherein Allah hath placed much good
O ye who believe! it is not lawful for you to inherit women's estates against their will; nor to hinder them, that ye may go off with part of what ye brought them, unless they commit fornication manifestly; but associate with them in reason, for if ye are averse from them, it may be that ye are averse from something wherein God has put much good for you
O believers! it is not allowed you to be heirs of your wives against their will; nor to hinder them from marrying, in order to take from them part of the dowry you had given them, unless they have been guilty of undoubted lewdness; but associate kindly with them: for if ye are estranged from them, haply ye are estranged from that in which God hath placed abundant good
O true believers, it is not lawful for you to be heirs of women against their will, nor to hinder them from marrying others, that ye may take away part of what ye have given them in dowry; unless they have been guilty of a manifest crime: But converse kindly with them. But if ye wish to exchange one wife for another, and have given one of them a talent, then take not from it anything. What! would you take it for a calumny and a manifest crime

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain translations of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 66:8, 19:60, 20:82, 25:70-71, 28:67, 16:119, 4:17-18, 85:10, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched; words a translator sets in brackets as his own addition were not counted as matches - repent; repents; repented; repenteth; repentance; repentant; repenting; penitence; penitent; turn + again; turns + again; turneth + again; turned + again; turning + again. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What the search did not reach. Some verses are not reached by these terms - among them 2:37, 9:102 and 110:3 - and they are not carried here. 39:54 is not carried: of the four translations searched, only Palmer and Pickthall use a term of the search there.
What was returned and not carried. 35 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:160 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome?; 2:279 - the usury passage; the repenting there concerns a debt; 3:89 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome? and What does the Qur'an say about guilt and forgiving yourself?; 3:90 - a repentance that is not accepted; carried by What does the Qur'an say about guilt and forgiving yourself?; 4:16 - inside a ruling on a penalty; carried by What does the Qur'an say about the punishment for adultery (zina)? and Does the Qur'an command stoning for adultery?; 4:146 - the sincerity it names is of religion, not of the repentance; carried by What does the Qur'an say about the hypocrites (munafiqun)?; 5:31 - the word rendered repent is a different Arabic word from the one in the verses carried; 5:34 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome?; 5:39 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome? and What does the Qur'an prescribe for theft?; 5:52 - the word rendered repent is a different Arabic word from the one in the verses carried; 5:71 - God turning toward a people, not a person repenting; 6:54 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about God's mercy encompassing all things? and How does the Qur'an hold together God's mercy and His justice?; 7:143 - Moses after the mountain; carried by Does the Qur'an say God can be seen? and Did God speak directly to any human, according to the Qur'an?; 7:153 - after the calf; carried by How does the Qur'an describe the golden calf - and which questions does it raise and not answer?; 9:3 - a proclamation at the pilgrimage; its setting is not taken up here; 9:5 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about idolaters (mushrikun)? and Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill unbelievers wherever they find them?; 9:11 - carried by How much charity does the Qur'an require (zakat)?; 9:74 - an offer to a particular group after a particular oath; its setting is not taken up here; 9:104 - God's acceptance; carried by What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again?; 9:112 - the repentant named first in a list of qualities; it names them without describing the turning; 9:126 - people tried each year who do not turn; 85:10 is carried for that side; 10:54 - the word rendered repentance is a different Arabic word from the one in the verses carried; 23:40 - the word rendered repent is a different Arabic word from the one in the verses carried; 24:5 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome?, What does the Qur'an say about false accusation of adultery (qadhf)? and What does the Qur'an say about false accusation of adultery between spouses?; 26:157 - the word rendered repented is a different Arabic word; carried by What does the Qur'an say about Salih and the she-camel?; 34:33 - the word rendered repentance is a different Arabic word from the one in the verses carried; 38:24 - David; the word rendered repented is a different Arabic word; carried by What does the Qur'an say about David and the Psalms? and What does the Qur'an say about a just ruler and just governance?; 40:3 - a name of God, the Accepter of repentance; it is about God, not the one who repents; 40:7 - the angels' prayer; carried by What does the Qur'an say about seeking forgiveness for others? and What does the Qur'an say about God's mercy encompassing all things?; 42:13 - the word rendered repentant is a different Arabic word; carried by What does the Qur'an say about the prophets being one brotherhood?; 42:25 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again? and What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?; 49:6 - the word rendered repent is a different Arabic word; carried by What does the Qur'an say about verifying news before acting on it?; 49:11 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about mocking others?, What does the Qur'an say about backbiting and slander? and Does the Qur'an rank Muslims, and can anyone judge another's level?; 66:4 - addressed to two of the Prophet's wives; carried by What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?; 66:5 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
