When the hypocrites come to you, they say, "We bear witness that you are God's Messenger." God knows that you are His Messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are liars.
What does Surah al-Munafiqun say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 63:1 When the hypocrites come unto thee (O Muhammad), they say: We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's messenger. And Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the hypocrites indeed are speaking falsely. This is here because it opens the surah on a stated witness and a verdict on it: "we bear witness that thou art indeed the apostle of God" in Sale and "We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's messenger" in Pickthall, answered by "the hypocrites are certainly liars" in Sale and "the hypocrites indeed are speaking falsely" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about hypocrisy as a sin of the heart?, with a different reason there.
- 02 63:2 They make their faith a pretext so that they may turn (men) from the way of Allah. Verily evil is that which they are wont to do. This is here because the renderings differ over what is used as cover: "taken their oaths for a protection" in Sale and "treat their oaths as a cover" in Itani, against "Their faith have they used as a cloak" in Rodwell, "take their faith for a cloak" in Palmer and "make their faith a pretext" in Pickthall.
- 03 63:3 That is because they believed, then disbelieved, therefore their hearts are sealed so that they understand not. This is here because it gives the stated cause and the stated result, and the sealing is worded five ways: "a seal is set on their hearts" in Sale, "a seal been set upon their hearts" in Rodwell, "a stamp set on their hearts" in Palmer, "their hearts are sealed" in Pickthall and "their hearts were sealed" in Itani.
- 04 63:4 And when thou seest them their figures please thee; and if they speak thou givest ear unto their speech. (They are) as though they were blocks of wood in striped cloaks. They deem every shout to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. Allah confound them! How they are perverted. This is here because it is where the renderings diverge most: the comparison is "pieces of timber set up against a wall" in Sale, "like timber propped up" in Palmer and "like propped-up timber" in Itani, where Pickthall alone has "blocks of wood in striped cloaks". ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the hypocrites (munafiqun)?, with a different reason there.
- 05 63:5 And when it is said unto them: Come! The messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you! they avert their faces and thou seest them turning away, disdainful. This is here because it describes a refusal of an offer to be prayed for, and what the head or face does differs: "they turn away their heads" in Sale, "they turn their heads aside" in Rodwell, "they avert their faces" in Pickthall and "they bend their heads" in Itani.
- 06 63:6 Whether thou ask forgiveness for them or ask not forgiveness for them is all one for them; Allah will not forgive them. Lo! Allah guideth not the evil-living folk. This is here because it states that the asking makes no difference, and names who is refused five ways: "the prevaricating people" in Sale, "a perverse people" in Rodwell, "a people who work abomination" in Palmer, "the evil-living folk" in Pickthall and "the sinful people" in Itani.
- 07 63:7 They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not. This is here because it reports what the group says about withholding support: "the refugees who are with the apostle of God" in Sale and "those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger" in Pickthall, whose brackets are his own.
- 08 63:8 They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not. This is here because it reports a second saying, and both the place and the two parties are named differently: "if we return to Medina" in Sale, "If we return to the city" in Rodwell, "If we return to el Medinah" in Palmer and "if we return to Al-Madinah" in Pickthall; "the worthier shall expel thence the meaner" in Sale against "the more powerful therein will evict the weak" in Itani.
- 09 63:9 O ye who believe! Let not your wealth nor your children distract you from remembrance of Allah. Those who do so, they are the losers. This is here because the surah turns here to believers and names what must not distract them: "let not your riches or your children divert you" in Sale, "let not your wealth and your children delude you" in Rodwell, "Let not your wealth nor your children distract you" in Pickthall and "Let neither your possessions nor your children distract you" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about remembering God (dhikr) - and what method does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 10 63:10 And spend of that wherewith We have provided you before death cometh unto one of you and he saith: My Lord! If only thou wouldst reprieve me for a little while, then I would give alms and be among the righteous. This is here because it is the instruction to give before death, and what is given is worded differently: "give alms out of that which We have bestowed on you" in Sale, "expend in the cause of God" in Rodwell, "expend in alms of what we have bestowed upon you" in Palmer and "give from what We have provided for you" in Itani.
- 11 63:11 But Allah reprieveth no soul when its term cometh, and Allah is Informed of what ye do. This is here because it closes the surah with the limit on that instruction, and the moment is named five ways: "when its determined time is come" in Sale, "when its appointed time has come" in Palmer, "when its term cometh" in Pickthall, "when its time has come" in Itani, and Rodwell "when its hour hath come!"
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Munafiqun is eleven verses long. It opens on a group who say one thing and are said to mean another, describes how they appear and what they say, and closes with two instructions addressed to believers.
At 63:2 the renderings differ over what is used as cover. Sale has "taken their oaths for a protection" and Itani "treat their oaths as a cover", where Rodwell has "Their faith have they used as a cloak", Palmer "take their faith for a cloak" and Pickthall "make their faith a pretext". Oaths in two, faith in three, and this study does not choose between them.
At 63:3 what follows is a sealing: "a seal is set on their hearts" in Sale, "a seal been set upon their hearts" in Rodwell, "a stamp set on their hearts" in Palmer, "their hearts are sealed" in Pickthall and "their hearts were sealed" in Itani.
63:4 is the longest verse here, and the renderings diverge across all of it. The comparison is to timber: "pieces of timber set up against a wall" in Sale, "Like timbers are they leaning" in Rodwell, "like timber propped up" in Palmer and "like propped-up timber" in Itani - where Pickthall alone adds clothing, "blocks of wood in striped cloaks". What is then said of them is "God curse them" in Sale, "God fight against them" in Palmer and "God condemns them" in Itani, while Rodwell has "God do battle with them!" and Pickthall "Allah confound them!"
At 63:6 forgiveness is refused, and who is refused it is named five ways: "the prevaricating people" in Sale, "a perverse people" in Rodwell, "a people who work abomination" in Palmer, "the evil-living folk" in Pickthall and "the sinful people" in Itani.
At 63:7-8 the group is quoted, first on withholding support and then on a return: "the inhabitants of Medina" in Sale and "you of Medina" in Rodwell. At 63:7 they would have support withheld from those with the messenger - "the refugees who are with the apostle of God" in Sale, "those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger" in Pickthall, where the bracketed words are his own. At 63:8 they speak of a return and an expulsion, and the place is named differently: "if we return to Medina" in Sale, "If we return to the city" in Rodwell, "If we return to el Medinah" in Palmer, "if we return to Al-Madinah" in Pickthall and "If we return to the City" in Itani. Who would drive out whom is "the worthier shall expel thence the meaner" in Sale, "the mightier will assuredly drive out the weaker" in Rodwell and "the more powerful therein will evict the weak" in Itani.
The surah turns at the end to believers. At 63:9 what must not distract is named by Sale as "let not your riches or your children divert you", against "Let not your wealth nor your children distract you" in Pickthall and "Let neither your possessions nor your children distract you" in Itani. At 63:10 the instruction is to give before death, and at 63:11 the reason is that no soul is delayed past its time: "when its determined time is come" in Sale, "when its appointed time has come" in Palmer, "when its term cometh" in Pickthall, "when its time has come" in Itani, and Rodwell "when its hour hath come!"
The study What does the Qur'an say about hypocrisy as a sin of the heart? carries 63:1, the study What does the Qur'an say about the hypocrites (munafiqun)? carries 63:4 and the study What does the Qur'an say about remembering God (dhikr) - and what method does it not give? carries 63:9, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify anyone the surah describes, name an occasion, or say what was said on it: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 63:1, widening across 11 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 11 passages, each with every cleared translation
11 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

They take their faith for a cloak, and then they turn folks from God's way: - evil is that which they have done
Their faith have they used as a cloak, and they turn aside others from the way of God! Evil are all their doings
They have taken their oaths for a protection, and they turn others aside from the way of God: It is surely evil which they do

Ge av det som vi har försett er med innan döden når någon av er, och han utbrister: ”Herre! Om du bara ger mig lite mer tid ska jag ge till välgörenhet och leva rättfärdigt!”

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 63:1-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eleven verses of Surah al-Munafiqun, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
