What does the Qur'an say about the hypocrites (munafiqun)?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:8–10 And of mankind are some who say: we believe in God and the Last Day, when they believe not. THEY THINK TO BEGUILE GOD AND THOSE WHO BELIEVE, AND THEY BEGUILE NONE SAVE THEMSELVES, but they perceive not. IN THEIR HEARTS IS A DISEASE, AND GOD INCREASETH THEIR DISEASE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the definition, the self-deception and the diagnosis are three consecutive verses and the middle one is the argument.
  2. 02 4:142–143 The hypocrites seek to beguile God, but it is He who beguileth them. When they stand up to worship they perform it languidly and to be seen of men, and are mindful of God but little. SWAYING BETWEEN THIS AND THAT, BELONGING NEITHER TO THESE NOR TO THOSE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the description of the prayer and the image of oscillation belong together, and the image is the best thing in the set.
  3. 03 63:4 And when thou seest them their figures please thee; and if they speak thou givest ear unto their speech. THEY ARE AS BLOCKS OF WOOD PROPPED UP. They deem every shout to be against them. In because it is the sharpest image and it turns on impressiveness that is hollow.
  4. 04 4:145–146 Lo, THE HYPOCRITES WILL BE IN THE LOWEST DEEP OF THE FIRE, and thou wilt find no helper for them - SAVE THOSE WHO REPENT AND AMEND AND HOLD FAST TO GOD and make their religion pure for God. In as ONE PASSAGE because the exception is in the very next verse and it is the pattern this run has found repeatedly.
  5. 05 9:67 The hypocrites, men and women, proceed one from another. They enjoin the wrong, and they forbid the right, and they withhold their hands. In because it defines them by conduct - the exact inversion of the community's duty - rather than by inward state alone.
  6. 06 2:204–205 And of mankind there is he whose conversation on the life of this world pleaseth thee, and he calleth God to witness as to that which is in his heart; YET HE IS THE MOST RIGID OF OPPONENTS. And when he turneth away his effort in the land is to make mischief. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the fullest portrait of the type and it names the gap between the talk and the effect.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Six passages, and the Qur'an's account of hypocrisy is more psychological than moral.

2:8-10 gives the core. People who SAY they believe and do not. Then the diagnosis: THEY THINK TO BEGUILE GOD AND THE BELIEVERS, AND THEY BEGUILE NONE SAVE THEMSELVES, BUT THEY PERCEIVE NOT. The deception is described as failing in every direction except inward. And then: IN THEIR HEARTS IS A DISEASE, AND GOD INCREASETH THEIR DISEASE.

4:143 supplies the image that fixes the condition: SWAYING BETWEEN THIS AND THAT, BELONGING NEITHER TO THESE NOR TO THOSE. Not secretly on the other side - on no side, oscillating.

63:4 is the most quotable: when you see them their appearance pleases you, and when they speak you listen - and THEY ARE AS BLOCKS OF WOOD PROPPED UP. Impressive, and holding nothing.

2:204-205 gives the portrait at full length. A man whose talk about this life pleases you, who calls God to witness what is in his heart, YET HE IS THE MOST RIGID OF OPPONENTS - and when he turns away, his work is ruin.

9:67 defines them by conduct, and by an exact inversion: they ENJOIN THE WRONG AND FORBID THE RIGHT and withhold their hands - the mirror image of what the community is elsewhere told to do.

4:145 places them in the LOWEST DEEP OF THE FIRE - below the disbelievers. And 4:146 opens it: SAVE THOSE WHO REPENT AND AMEND AND HOLD FAST TO GOD AND MAKE THEIR RELIGION PURE. The harshest sentence in the book on any group is followed immediately by a way out.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:8–10, widening across 6 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Talal Itani2012 He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear God's revelations being rejected, or ridiculed, do not sit with them until they engage in some other subject. Otherwise, you would be like them. God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers, into Hell, altogether.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 He hath already revealed unto you in the Scripture that, when ye hear the revelations of Allah rejected and derided, (ye) sit not with them (who disbelieve and mock) until they engage in some other conversation. Lo! in that case (if ye stayed) ye would be like unto them. Lo! Allah will gather hypocrites and disbelievers, all together, into hell

Edward Henry Palmer1880 He hath revealed this to you in the Book, that when ye hear the signs of God disbelieved in and mocked at, then sit ye not down with them until they plunge into another discourse, for verily, then ye would be like them. Verily, God will gather the hypocrites and misbelievers into hell together

John Medows Rodwell1861 And already hath He sent this down to you in the Book "WHEN YE SHALL HEAR THE SIGNS OF GOD THEY SHALL NOT BE BELIEVED BUT SHALL BE MOCKED AT." Sit ye not therefore with such, until they engage in other discourse; otherwise, ye will become like them. Verily God will gather the hypocrites and the infidels all together in Hell

George Sale1734 And he hath already revealed unto you, in the book of the Koran, the following passage, when ye shall hear the signs of God, they shall not be believed, but they shall be laughed to scorn. Therefore sit not with them who believe not, until they engage in different discourse; for if ye do ye will certainly become like unto them. Talal Itani2012 Those who lie in wait for you: if you attain victory from God, they say, "Were we not with you?" But if the disbelievers get a turn, they say, "Did we not side with you, and defend you from the believers?" God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection; and God will give the disbelievers no means of overcoming the believers.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Those who wait upon occasion in regard to you and, if a victory cometh unto you from Allah, say: Are we not with you? and if the disbelievers meet with a success say: Had we not the mastery of you, and did we not protect you from the believers? - Allah will judge between you at the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will not give the disbelievers any way (of success) against the believers

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Those who lie in wait for you, and if the victory be yours from God, say, 'Were we not with you?' and if the misbelievers have a chance, they say, 'Did we not get the mastery over you, and defend you from the believers?' But God shall judge between you on the resurrection day; for God will not give the misbelievers a way against believers

John Medows Rodwell1861 They watch you narrowly. Then if God grant you a victory, they say, "Are we not with you?" and if the infidels meet with a success, they say to them, "Were we not superior to you: and did we not defend you from those believers?" God shall judge betwixt ye on the day of the resurrection, and God will by no means make a way for the infidels over the believers

George Sale1734 They who wait to observe what befalleth you, if victory be granted you from God, say, were we not with you? But if any advantage happen to the infidels, they say unto them, were we not superior to you, and have we not defended you against the believers? God shall judge between you on the day of resurrection; and God will not grant the unbelievers means to prevail over the faithful

And when thou seest them their figures please thee; and if they speak thou givest ear unto their speech. (They are) as though they were blocks of wood in striped cloaks. They deem every shout to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. Allah confound them! How they are perverted

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

And when thou seest them, their persons please thee; but if they speak, thou listenest to their speech: they are like timber propped up: they reckon every noise against them! They are the foe, so beware of them!- God fight against them, how they lie

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

When thou seest them, their persons make thee marvel; and if they speak, thou listenest with pleasure to their discourse. Like timbers are they leaning against a wall! They think that every shout is against them. They are enemies - Beware of them then - God do battle with them! How false are they

George Sale published 1734

When thou beholdest them, their persons please thee: And if they speak, thou hearest their discourse with delight. They resemble pieces of timber set up against a wall. They imagine every shout to be against them. They are enemies; wherefore beware of them. God curse them: How are they turned aside from the truth

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. 2:205 Και όταν φεύγει (από σένα, ω, Μωχάμμαντ) σπεύδει να διαδώσει το κακό στη γη και να καταστρέψει τις καλλιέργειες και τα βοοειδή. Μα ο Αλλάχ δεν αγαπά την καταστροφή.

Then whoso hasteneth (his departure) by two days, it is no sin for him, and whoso delayeth, it is no sin for him; that is for him who wardeth off (evil). What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:8-10, 4:142-143, 63:4, 4:145-146, 9:67, 2:204-205, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - the + hypocrites + will + be + in + the + lowest + deep; in + their + hearts + is + a + disease; they + think + to + beguile + god; swaying + between + this + and + that; o + prophet + strive + against + the + disbelievers + and + the + hypocrites. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 6 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:52 - about alliances in a specific situation; 8:49 - a taunt quoted at a battle; 9:125 - near-identical to 2:10 in force; 24:50 - a rhetorical question about refusing judgment; 47:29 - near-identical; 74:31 - carried by the study Is there a hidden numerical 'miracle of 19' in the Qur'an?

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
