Among the people are those who say, "We believe in God and in the Last Day," but they are not believers.
What does the Qur'an say about hypocrisy as a sin of the heart?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:8–10 And of mankind are some who say: we believe in God and the Last Day, when they believe not. They think to beguile God and those who believe, AND THEY BEGUILE NONE SAVE THEMSELVES, BUT THEY PERCEIVE NOT. IN THEIR HEARTS IS A DISEASE, AND GOD INCREASETH THEIR DISEASE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the fault is located in the heart in 2:10 and the self-deception in 2:9 is the reason it is a disease rather than a tactic. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the hypocrites (munafiqun)?, with a different reason there.
- 02 4:142–143 The hypocrites seek to beguile God, but it is He who beguileth them. WHEN THEY STAND UP TO WORSHIP THEY PERFORM IT LANGUIDLY AND TO BE SEEN OF MEN, AND ARE MINDFUL OF GOD BUT LITTLE. Swaying between this and that. In as ONE PASSAGE because it describes an outward act performed correctly and inwardly empty, which is the precise form of the fault.
- 03 63:1 When the hypocrites come unto thee they say: we bear witness that thou art indeed God's messenger. And God knoweth that thou art indeed His messenger, and God beareth witness that THE HYPOCRITES INDEED ARE SPEAKING FALSELY. In because what they say is TRUE and they are still called liars - which is the sharpest statement anywhere that the fault is in the heart and not in the words.
- 04 2:204–205 And of mankind there is he whose conversation on the life of this world pleaseth thee, AND HE CALLETH GOD TO WITNESS AS TO THAT WHICH IS IN HIS HEART; yet he is the most rigid of opponents. In as ONE PASSAGE because he invokes God as guarantor of his inward state, which is the aggravated form. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the hypocrites (munafiqun)?, with a different reason there.
- 05 48:11 Those of the wandering Arabs who were left behind will tell thee: our possessions and our households occupied us... THEY SPEAK WITH THEIR TONGUES THAT WHICH IS NOT IN THEIR HEARTS. In because it states the definition in one clause, in the plainest words the text uses for it.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
63:1 is the verse that settles what this fault is, and it does so by a paradox.
The hypocrites come and say: WE BEAR WITNESS THAT THOU ART INDEED GOD'S MESSENGER. The verse then confirms that he is. And then: GOD BEARETH WITNESS THAT THE HYPOCRITES INDEED ARE SPEAKING FALSELY.
They said something true and are called liars for it. The falsehood cannot be in the proposition; it can only be in the relation between the words and the speaker. 48:11 states that plainly: THEY SPEAK WITH THEIR TONGUES THAT WHICH IS NOT IN THEIR HEARTS.
2:8-10 gives the diagnosis. The self-deception first - THEY BEGUILE NONE SAVE THEMSELVES, BUT THEY PERCEIVE NOT - and then the condition: IN THEIR HEARTS IS A DISEASE, AND GOD INCREASETH THEIR DISEASE. It is described as an illness that worsens rather than a policy that could be abandoned.
4:142 shows the outward form, and it is the most uncomfortable verse here because the act described is correct: they stand up to pray. What is wrong is the manner - LANGUIDLY AND TO BE SEEN OF MEN - and the inward fact, MINDFUL OF GOD BUT LITTLE. Nothing in the performance is defective.
2:204 is the aggravated case: a man whose talk pleases you AND WHO CALLS GOD TO WITNESS AS TO WHAT IS IN HIS HEART. He offers God as guarantor of the very thing that is empty.
The study What does the Qur'an mean by a 'sound heart'? carries the opposite condition, and 4:145-146 - the lowest deep of the Fire, and the exception for those who repent - is carried by What does the Qur'an say about the hypocrites (munafiqun)?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:8–10, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Wavering between the one and the other - belonging neither to these nor those! and by no means shalt thou find a path for him whom God misleadeth

He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear God's revelations being rejected, or ridiculed, do not sit with them until they engage in some other subject. Otherwise, you would be like them. God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers, into Hell, altogether.
He hath already revealed unto you in the Scripture that, when ye hear the revelations of Allah rejected and derided, (ye) sit not with them (who disbelieve and mock) until they engage in some other conversation. Lo! in that case (if ye stayed) ye would be like unto them. Lo! Allah will gather hypocrites and disbelievers, all together, into hell
He hath revealed this to you in the Book, that when ye hear the signs of God disbelieved in and mocked at, then sit ye not down with them until they plunge into another discourse, for verily, then ye would be like them. Verily, God will gather the hypocrites and misbelievers into hell together
And already hath He sent this down to you in the Book "WHEN YE SHALL HEAR THE SIGNS OF GOD THEY SHALL NOT BE BELIEVED BUT SHALL BE MOCKED AT." Sit ye not therefore with such, until they engage in other discourse; otherwise, ye will become like them. Verily God will gather the hypocrites and the infidels all together in Hell
And he hath already revealed unto you, in the book of the Koran, the following passage, when ye shall hear the signs of God, they shall not be believed, but they shall be laughed to scorn. Therefore sit not with them who believe not, until they engage in different discourse; for if ye do ye will certainly become like unto them. God will surely gather the ungodly and the unbelievers together in hell

Those who lie in wait for you: if you attain victory from God, they say, "Were we not with you?" But if the disbelievers get a turn, they say, "Did we not side with you, and defend you from the believers?" God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection; and God will give the disbelievers no means of overcoming the believers.
Those who wait upon occasion in regard to you and, if a victory cometh unto you from Allah, say: Are we not with you? and if the disbelievers meet with a success say: Had we not the mastery of you, and did we not protect you from the believers? - Allah will judge between you at the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will not give the disbelievers any way (of success) against the believers
Those who lie in wait for you, and if the victory be yours from God, say, 'Were we not with you?' and if the misbelievers have a chance, they say, 'Did we not get the mastery over you, and defend you from the believers?' But God shall judge between you on the resurrection day; for God will not give the misbelievers a way against believers

They treat their oaths as a cover, and so they repel others from God's path. Evil is what they do.
They make their faith a pretext so that they may turn (men) from the way of Allah. Verily evil is that which they are wont to do
They take their faith for a cloak, and then they turn folks from God's way: - evil is that which they have done
Their faith have they used as a cloak, and they turn aside others from the way of God! Evil are all their doings
They have taken their oaths for a protection, and they turn others aside from the way of God: It is surely evil which they do

This is testified of them, because they believed, and afterwards became unbelievers: Wherefore a seal is set on their hearts, and they shall not understand

Ndërkohë, Allahu nuk e do shkatërrimin.

2:204 Namoota irraa nijira kan jechi isaa addunyaa irratti si dinqisiisu. waan qalbii isaa keessa jiru irratti Rabbiin ragaa godhata, inni falmiidhaan jabaa. [76]
2:205 Yeroo gara gale dachii keessa fiiga ishee keessatti badii raawwachuuf. Midhaaniifii horii balleessuuf, Rabbiin badii hin jaalatu.

The Desert-Arabs who remained behind will say to you, "Our belongings and our families have preoccupied us, so ask forgiveness for us." They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say, "Who can avail you anything against God, if He desires loss for you, or desires gain for you?" In fact, God is Informed of what you do.

Those of the wandering Arabs who were left behind will tell thee: Our possessions and our households occupied us, so ask forgiveness for us! They speak with their tongues that which is not in their hearts. Say: Who can avail you aught against Allah, if He intend you hurt or intend you profit? Nay, but Allah is ever Aware of what ye do
The desert Arabs who were left behind shall say, 'Our wealth and our people occupied us; ask pardon then for us!' - they speak with their tongues what is not in their hearts! Say, 'Who can control for you aught from God, if He wish you harm or wish you advantage?' Nay, God of what ye do is well aware
The Arabs who took not the field with you, will say to thee, "We were engaged with our property and our families; therefore ask thou pardon for us." They speak with their tongues what is not in their hearts. SAY: And who can have any power over God in your behalf, whether he will you some loss, or whether he will you an advantage? Yes, God is acquainted with your doings
The Arabs of the desert who were left behind will say unto thee, our substance and our families employed us, so that we went not forth with thee to war; wherefore ask pardon for us. They speak that with their tongues, which is not in their hearts. Answer, who shall be able to obtain for you any thing from God to the contrary, if he is pleased to afflict you, or is pleased to be gracious unto you? Yea verily, God is well acquainted with that which ye do

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

The translators word this verse differently
Those who pledge allegiance to you are pledging allegiance to God. The hand of God is over their hands. Whoever breaks his pledge breaks it to his own loss. And whoever fulfills his covenant with God, He will grant him a great reward.
Lo! those who swear allegiance unto thee (Muhammad), swear allegiance only unto Allah. The Hand of Allah is above their hands. So whosoever breaketh his oath, breaketh it only to his soul's hurt; while whosoever keepeth his covenant with Allah, on him will He bestow immense reward
Verily, those who swear allegiance to thee do but swear allegiance to God;- God's hand is above their hands and whoso perjures himself does but perjure himself against himself; but he who fulfils what he has covenanted with God, God shall bring him mighty hire
In truth, they who plighted fealty to thee, really plighted that fealty to God: the hand of God was over their hands! Whoever, therefore, shall break his oath shall only break it to his own hurt; but whoever shall be true to his engagement with God, He will give him a great reward
Verily they who swear fealty unto thee, swear fealty unto God: The hand of God is over their hands. Whoever shall violate his oath, will violate the same to the hurt only of his own soul: But whoever shall perform that which he hath covenanted with God, He will surely give him a great reward

But you thought that the Messenger and the believers will never return to their families, and this seemed fine to your hearts; and you harbored evil thoughts, and were uncivilized people.
Nay, but ye deemed that the messenger and the believers would never return to their own folk, and that was made fairseeming in your hearts, and ye did think an evil thought, and ye were worthless folk
Nay, ye thought that the Apostle and the believers would not ever return again to their families; that was made seemly in your hearts! and ye thought evil thoughts, and ye were a corrupt people

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:8-10, 4:142-143, 63:1, 2:204-205, 48:11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - in + their + hearts + is + a + disease + and + god + increaseth + their + disease; say + with + their + mouths + that + which + is + not + in + their + hearts; they + think + to + beguile + god; wavering + between + this + and + that. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
