When there comes God's victory, and conquest.
What does Surah an-Nasr say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 110:1 When Allah's succour and the triumph cometh. This is here because it opens the surah with what comes, in words the renderings do not all share: "the assistance of God" in Sale, "the HELP of God" in Rodwell, "God's help" in Palmer, "Allah's succour" in Pickthall and "God's victory" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study In what order was the Qur'an revealed, and why is that not the order of the book?, with a different reason there.
- 02 110:2 And thou seest mankind entering the religion of Allah in troops. This is here because it holds what the person addressed sees, with those entering called "the people" in Sale and Itani, "men" in Rodwell and Palmer and "mankind" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study In what order was the Qur'an revealed, and why is that not the order of the book?, with a different reason there.
- 03 110:3 Then hymn the praises of thy Lord, and seek forgiveness of Him. Lo! He is ever ready to show mercy. This is here because it closes the surah with the commands to praise and to seek forgiveness, and with what is said of God in words the renderings do not all share: "He is inclined to forgive" in Sale, "He loveth to turn in mercy" in Rodwell, "He is relentant" in Palmer, "He is ever ready to show mercy" in Pickthall and "He is the Accepter of Repentance" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies In what order was the Qur'an revealed, and why is that not the order of the book?, What does the Qur'an say about seeking forgiveness (istighfar) - and what formula does it not give? and Where do the rewards of 'SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah' come from - Qur'an, hadith, or folk?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah an-Nasr is three verses long. It is spoken to someone it does not name, addressed as "thou" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall and as "you" in Itani.
At 110:1 two things come, in a clause that opens with "When", and the renderings do not name them in the same words. The first is "the assistance of God" in Sale, "the HELP of God" in Rodwell, "God's help" in Palmer, "Allah's succour" in Pickthall and "God's victory" in Itani. The second is "the victory" in Sale and Rodwell, "victory" in Palmer, "the triumph" in Pickthall and "conquest" in Itani. So "victory" stands first in Itani and second in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer. The verse does not name the victory, or say when it comes, and this study does not say either.
At 110:2 the seeing is "thou shalt see" in Sale and Palmer, "thou seest" in Rodwell and Pickthall and "you see" in Itani. What is seen is "the people" in Sale and Itani, "men" in Rodwell and Palmer and "mankind" in Pickthall, entering "the religion of God" in Sale and Rodwell, "God's religion" in Palmer and Itani and "the religion of Allah" in Pickthall. They enter "by troops" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, "in troops" in Pickthall and "in multitudes" in Itani. The verse does not name the people.
At 110:3 the renderings open with "Then" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani, and Sale has no such word. Two commands follow. The first is "Celebrate the praise of thy Lord" in Sale, "utter the praise of thy Lord" in Rodwell, "celebrate the praises of thy Lord" in Palmer, "hymn the praises of thy Lord" in Pickthall and "celebrate the praise of your Lord" in Itani. The second is "ask pardon of Him" in Sale, "implore His pardon" in Rodwell, "ask forgiveness of Him" in Palmer, "seek forgiveness of Him" in Pickthall and "seek His forgiveness" in Itani. The verse ends with what is said of God, and here the renderings use different words: "He is inclined to forgive" in Sale, "He loveth to turn in mercy" in Rodwell, "He is relentant" in Palmer, "He is ever ready to show mercy" in Pickthall and "He is the Accepter of Repentance" in Itani. The verse does not say what the forgiveness is asked for.
The study In what order was the Qur'an revealed, and why is that not the order of the book? carries all three verses, and the studies What does the Qur'an say about seeking forgiveness (istighfar) - and what formula does it not give? and Where do the rewards of 'SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah' come from - Qur'an, hadith, or folk? carry 110:3, each with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the help or the victory, the person the surah addresses or the people seen entering, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 110:1, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 110:1-3, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all three verses of Surah an-Nasr, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
