And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember God and ask forgiveness for their sins-and who forgives sins except God? And they do not persist in their wrongdoing while they know.
What does the Qur'an say about seeking forgiveness (istighfar) - and what formula does it not give?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:135 Those who, when they do an evil thing or wrong themselves, remember Allah and implore forgiveness for their sins - WHO FORGIVETH SINS SAVE ALLAH ONLY? - and WILL NOT KNOWINGLY REPEAT (the wrong) they did. This is here because it attaches a condition to the asking, and the condition is about what happens next.
- 02 4:110 Yet whoso doeth evil or wrongeth his own soul, then seeketh pardon of Allah, WILL FIND ALLAH FORGIVING, MERCIFUL. Carried as the bare promise with no condition attached, so it can be read against 3:135.
- 03 11:3 Ask pardon of your Lord and turn to Him repentant. He will cause you to ENJOY A FAIR ESTATE UNTIL A TIME APPOINTED. This is here because it attaches a worldly consequence, which is unusual and links to 71:10-12.
- 04 71:10–12 In as ONE PASSAGE because the three verses are one sentence and the consequences are a list: SEEK PARDON OF YOUR LORD - lo! He was ever Forgiving - HE WILL LET LOOSE THE SKY FOR YOU IN PLENTEOUS RAIN, and will help you with WEALTH AND SONS, and will assign unto you gardens and rivers. Carried because it is the most concrete set of promises attached to asking forgiveness anywhere in the book, and they are all worldly.
- 05 110:3 Then hymn the praises of thy Lord, AND SEEK FORGIVENESS OF HIM. Lo! He is ever ready to show mercy. This is here because of who it is addressed to - the instruction to seek forgiveness is given at a moment of victory, and to the Prophet.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and what is striking is how little of this is about guilt.
The core promise is unconditional in 4:110: whoever does evil or wrongs his own soul, then seeks God's pardon, WILL FIND God forgiving and merciful. No qualifier.
3:135 gives the same thing with a condition, and the condition is about the future rather than the feeling: those who ask forgiveness and DO NOT KNOWINGLY PERSIST in what they did. It is worth reading the two together - one verse promises without condition, the next describes the people for whom it holds, and the difference between them is not remorse but repetition.
Then two verses do something a reader may not expect. 11:3 attaches a worldly consequence: ask pardon of your Lord and turn to Him, and He will let you enjoy a fair estate until an appointed time. And 71:10-12 makes it concrete and material - seek forgiveness, and He will loose the sky upon you in abundant rain, and help you with WEALTH AND SONS, and give you gardens and rivers. Those are agricultural and household blessings. The asking is not framed only as a transaction about the next life.
And 110:3, the last of them, is addressed to the Prophet at the moment of victory: hymn the praise of your Lord AND SEEK FORGIVENESS OF HIM. The instruction arrives at a high point, not a low one, and it is given to the one person a reader might think had least occasion for it. Whatever else the practice is in this book, it is not confined to people conscious of having done something wrong.
What the text does not give is a formula. The phrases used in practice, the counts, the times - all of that is from elsewhere, and this platform holds none of it. What is here is an unconditional promise, one condition about not persisting, a set of worldly consequences, and an instruction delivered at a moment of triumph.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:135, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

There you are, arguing on their behalf in the present life, but who will argue with God on their behalf on the Day of Resurrection? Or who will be their representative?
Ho! ye are they who pleaded for them in the life of the world. But who will plead with Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will then be their defender
Here are ye, wrangling for them about this world's life;- but who shall wrangle with God for them on the day of judgment, or who shall be a guardian over them
Oh! ye are they who plead in their favour in this present life; but who shall plead with God for them on the day of the resurrection? Who will be the guardian over them
Behold, ye are they who have disputed for them in this present life; but who shall dispute with God for them on the day of resurrection, or who will become their patron

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:135, 4:110, 11:3, 71:10-12, 110:3, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
