Everything in the heavens and the earth praises God. He is the Almighty, the Wise.
What does Surah as-Saff say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 61:1 All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah, and He is the Mighty, the Wise. This is here because it opens the surah with praise of God from all that the heavens and the earth contain, and the verb differs: "celebrateth the praise of God" in Sale, "praiseth God" in Rodwell, "celebrates the praises of God" in Palmer, "glorifieth Allah" in Pickthall and "praises God" in Itani.
- 02 61:2 O ye who believe! Why say ye that which ye do not. This is here because it puts a question to believers, and Palmer alone words it as a command: Palmer has "say not what ye do not", where Sale has "why do ye say that which ye do not", Rodwell "why profess ye that which ye practise not" and Itani "Why do you say what you do not do?"
- 03 61:3 It is most hateful in the sight of Allah that ye say that which ye do not. This is here because it says how that act is regarded, and the words differ: "most odious in the sight of God" in Sale, "Most hateful is it to God" in Rodwell, "most hateful to God" in Palmer and Itani and "most hateful in the sight of Allah" in Pickthall.
- 04 61:4 Lo! Allah loveth them who battle for His cause in ranks, as if they were a solid structure. This is here because it says who is loved and what they are likened to: "a well compacted building" in Sale, "a solid wall" in Rodwell, "a compact building" in Palmer, "a solid structure" in Pickthall and "a compact structure" in Itani. Sale alone has them fight "for his religion in battle array".
- 05 61:5 And (remember) when Moses said unto his people: O my people! Why persecute ye me, when ye well know that I am Allah's messenger unto you? So when they went astray Allah sent their hearts astray. And Allah guideth not the evil-living folk. This is here because it recalls Moses speaking to his people, and the treatment he asks about is worded differently: "why do ye injure me" in Sale, "Why grieve ye me" in Rodwell, "why do ye hurt me" in Palmer, "Why persecute ye me" in Pickthall and "why do you hurt me" in Itani. Also carried by the study Who does God guide, and who does He leave astray, in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 06 61:6 And when Jesus son of Mary said: O Children of Israel! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah unto you, confirming that which was (revealed) before me in the Torah, and bringing good tidings of a messenger who cometh after me, whose name is the Praised One. Yet when he hath come unto them with clear proofs, they say: This is mere magic. This is here because it recalls Jesus son of Mary speaking to the children of Israel of a messenger to come after him, and the renderings differ over the name: Sale has "whose name shall be Ahmed", Rodwell "whose name shall be Ahmad!", Palmer "whose name shall be Ahmed!", Itani "whose name is Ahmad" and Pickthall "whose name is the Praised One". The bracket in Rodwell's "he (Ahmad) presented himself" is his own. Also carried by the studies Does the Qur'an say the Prophet was foretold by earlier prophets? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet Muhammad?, with different reasons there.
- 07 61:7 And who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie against Allah when he is summoned unto Al-Islam? And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk. This is here because it asks who does greater wrong, and what is done against God is worded differently: "forgeth a lie against God" in Sale, "deviseth a falsehood concerning God" in Rodwell, "forges against God a lie" in Palmer, "inventeth a lie against Allah" in Pickthall and "attributes falsehoods to God" in Itani.
- 08 61:8 Fain would they put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light however much the disbelievers are averse. This is here because it speaks of a light that some would put out with their mouths: "They seek to extinguish God's light with their mouths" in Sale, "put out the light of God with their mouths" in Rodwell and Palmer, "put out the light of Allah with their mouths" in Pickthall and "They want to extinguish God's Light with their mouths" in Itani.
- 09 61:9 He it is Who hath sent His messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it conqueror of all religion however much idolaters may be averse. This is here because it says what the religion of truth is sent to do: "that he may exalt the same above every religion" in Sale, "He may make it victorious over every other religion" in Rodwell, "to set it above all religion" in Palmer, "that He may make it conqueror of all religion" in Pickthall and "to make it prevail over all religions" in Itani.
- 10 61:10 O ye who believe! Shall I show you a commerce that will save you from a painful doom. This is here because it makes an offer, and the word for it differs: "a merchandize" in Sale, "a merchandise" in Rodwell and Palmer, "a commerce" in Pickthall and "a trade" in Itani.
- 11 61:11 Ye should believe in Allah and His messenger, and should strive for the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is better for you, if ye did but know. This is here because it says what the offer asks: Sale has "defend God's true religion with your substance, and in your own persons", Rodwell "do valiantly in the cause of God with your wealth and with your persons!", Palmer "to fight strenuously in God's cause with your property and your persons", Pickthall "strive for the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives" and Itani "strive in the cause of God with your possessions and yourselves".
- 12 61:12 He will forgive you your sins and bring you into Gardens underneath which rivers flow, and pleasant dwellings in Gardens of Eden. That is the supreme triumph. This is here because it names what is promised, and the closing words differ: "great felicity" in Sale, "the great bliss" in Rodwell, "the mighty bliss" in Palmer, "the supreme triumph" in Pickthall and "the supreme success" in Itani.
- 13 61:13 And (He will give you) another (blessing) which ye love: help from Allah and present victory. Give good tidings (O Muhammad) to believers. This is here because it adds what else is given: Sale has "a speedy victory", Rodwell "speedy conquest!", Palmer "victory nigh!", Pickthall "present victory" and Itani "imminent victory". The bracket in Pickthall's "Give good tidings (O Muhammad) to believers" is his own.
- 14 61:14 O ye who believe! Be Allah's helpers, even as Jesus son of Mary said unto the disciples: Who are my helpers for Allah? They said: We are Allah's helpers. And a party of the Children of Israel believed, while a party disbelieved. Then We strengthened those who believed against their foe, and they became the uppermost. This is here because it closes the surah with a call and with how the matter ended: Sale has "be ye the assistants of God", Rodwell "be helpers (ansars) of God", with a bracket of his own, Palmer "be ye the helpers of God!", Pickthall "Be Allah's helpers" and Itani "Be supporters of God". The end is "wherefore they became victorious over them" in Sale, "and they became the uppermost" in Pickthall and "so they became dominant" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah as-Saff runs from 61:1 to 61:14. It opens with praise of God from all that the heavens and the earth contain, puts a question to believers about saying what they do not do, recalls Moses speaking to his people and Jesus son of Mary speaking to the children of Israel, and closes with an offer described as a trade and a call to be helpers of God.
At 61:2 the question is "why do ye say that which ye do not" in Sale and "Why say ye that which ye do not" in Pickthall, and Itani has "Why do you say what you do not do?" Rodwell words it "why profess ye that which ye practise not", and Palmer alone puts it as a command rather than a question: "say not what ye do not". At 61:3 the same act is "most odious in the sight of God" in Sale and "most hateful to God" in Palmer and Itani.
At 61:4 those who are loved fight in ranks, and what they are likened to differs: "as though they were a well compacted building" in Sale, "as though they were a solid wall" in Rodwell, "as though they were a compact building" in Palmer, "as if they were a solid structure" in Pickthall and "as though they were a compact structure" in Itani. Sale alone has them fight "for his religion in battle array", where Palmer and Itani have "fight in His cause".
At 61:5 Moses asks his people why they treat him as they do, and the treatment is worded differently: "why do ye injure me" in Sale, "Why grieve ye me" in Rodwell, "why do ye hurt me" in Palmer, "Why persecute ye me" in Pickthall and "why do you hurt me" in Itani. What follows their turning aside is "God made their hearts to deviate from the right way" in Sale, "God led their hearts astray" in Rodwell, "God made their hearts to swerve" in Palmer, "Allah sent their hearts astray" in Pickthall and "God swerved their hearts" in Itani.
At 61:6 Jesus son of Mary speaks of a messenger to come after him, and the renderings differ over the name. Sale has "whose name shall be Ahmed", Rodwell "whose name shall be Ahmad!", Palmer "whose name shall be Ahmed!" and Itani "whose name is Ahmad", where Pickthall renders the name as a description: "whose name is the Praised One". What came before him is "the law which was delivered before me" in Sale, "the law which was given before me" in Rodwell and "the law that was before me" in Palmer, where Pickthall has "that which was (revealed) before me in the Torah" and Itani "what preceded me of the Torah". In the next sentence Rodwell names who came with clear proofs, "he (Ahmad) presented himself with clear proofs of his mission", and the bracket is his own; the other renderings leave him unnamed, and this study does not name him either.
At 61:8 the intent is "They seek to extinguish God's light with their mouths" in Sale, "Fain would they put out the light of Allah with their mouths" in Pickthall and "They want to extinguish God's Light with their mouths" in Itani. At 61:9 what the religion of truth is sent to do is "that he may exalt the same above every religion" in Sale, "He may make it victorious over every other religion" in Rodwell, "to set it above all religion" in Palmer, "that He may make it conqueror of all religion" in Pickthall and "to make it prevail over all religions" in Itani.
At 61:10 the offer is of "a merchandize" in Sale, "a merchandise" in Rodwell and Palmer, "a commerce" in Pickthall and "a trade" in Itani. At 61:11 what it asks is worded differently: Sale has "defend God's true religion with your substance, and in your own persons", Rodwell "do valiantly in the cause of God with your wealth and with your persons!", Palmer "to fight strenuously in God's cause with your property and your persons", Pickthall "strive for the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives" and Itani "strive in the cause of God with your possessions and yourselves". At 61:13 what is added is worded differently again: Sale has "a speedy victory", Rodwell "speedy conquest!", Palmer "victory nigh!", Pickthall "present victory" and Itani "imminent victory".
At 61:14 the call is worded differently: Sale has "be ye the assistants of God", Rodwell "be helpers (ansars) of God", with a bracket of his own, Palmer "be ye the helpers of God!", Pickthall "Be Allah's helpers" and Itani "Be supporters of God". Jesus's question is put "to the apostles" in Sale and Palmer and "to the disciples" in Itani. The surah closes on how the matter ended: "wherefore they became victorious over them" in Sale, "and soon did they prove victorious" in Rodwell, "and they were on the morrow superior" in Palmer, "and they became the uppermost" in Pickthall and "so they became dominant" in Itani.
The study Who does God guide, and who does He leave astray, in the Qur'an? carries 61:5, and the studies Does the Qur'an say the Prophet was foretold by earlier prophets? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet Muhammad? carry 61:6, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say who is meant by the messenger whose name is given, beyond what the renderings say, who fought in the ranks, or on what occasion any verse here was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 61:1, widening across 14 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 14 passages, each with every cleared translation
14 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Yeroo Iisaa ilma Maryam jedhe "yaa ilmaan Israa'iil!

O you who believe! Be supporters of God, as Jesus son of Mary said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters towards God?" The disciples said, "We are God's supporters." So a group of the Children of Israel believed, while another group disbelieved. We supported those who believed against their foe, so they became dominant.

O ye who believe! Be Allah's helpers, even as Jesus son of Mary said unto the disciples: Who are my helpers for Allah? They said: We are Allah's helpers. And a party of the Children of Israel believed, while a party disbelieved. Then We strengthened those who believed against their foe, and they became the uppermost
O ye who believe! be ye the helpers of God! as Jesus son of Mary said to the apostles, 'Who are my helpers for God?' Said the apostles, 'We are God's helpers!' And a party of the children of Israel believed, and a party misbelieved. And we aided those who believed against their enemies, and they were on the morrow superior
O ye who believe! be helpers (ansars) of God; as said Jesus the son of Mary to his apostles, "Who will come to the help of God?" "We," said the apostles, "will be helpers of God." And a part of the children of Israel believed, and a part believed not. But to those who believed gave we the upperhand over their foes, and soon did they prove victorious
O true believers, be ye the assistants of God; as Jesus the son of Mary said to the apostles, who will be my assistants with respect to God? The apostles answered, we will be the assistants of God. So a part of the children of Israel believed, and a part believed not: But We strengthened those who believed, above their enemy; wherefore they became victorious over them

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

O credenti!
Yaa warra amantan! tumsitoota Rabbii ta'aa, Akkuma Iisaa Ibnu Maryam hawaariyyootaan jedhe "(waamicha ani) gara Rabbiitti (godhu irratti) namni na tumsu eenyu?"
Enyi mlioamini!

And something else you love: support from God, and imminent victory. So give good news to the believers.
And (He will give you) another (blessing) which ye love: help from Allah and present victory. Give good tidings (O Muhammad) to believers
And other things which ye love,- help from God and victory nigh! so do thou give the glad tidings unto the believers
And other things which ye desire will he bestow, Help from God and speedy conquest! Bear thou these tidings to the faithful
And ye shall obtain other things which ye desire, namely, assistance from God, and a speedy victory. And do thou bear good tidings to the true believers

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 61:1-14, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah as-Saff, from 61:1 to 61:14, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
