Say, "This is my way; I invite to God, based on clear knowledge-I and whoever follows me. Glory be to God; and I am not of the polytheists."
Must you be learned in the Qur'an before you preach it?
In short
- The text says: say, this is my way, I invite to God based on clear knowledge, I and whoever follows me, where Itani and Pickthall have knowledge, Palmer and Rodwell clear proof and Sale an evident demonstration (12:108); do not occupy yourself with what you have no knowledge of, where Palmer has pursue and the other three follow (17:36); why do those who believe say what they do not do, which is most hateful to God (61:2-3); and do they urge virtuous conduct on others while forgetting their own, though they read the Scripture (2:44).
- The text does not say: a measure of learning that must be reached before a person may speak of the Qur'an to others.
- The rest comes from: outside the Qur'an. The practice readers ask about, known by the names Tablighi Jamaat, tabligh, going out, chilla and gasht, or a preaching trip, is named here and not described or judged.
Where the renderings split
12:108, Itani: "based on clear knowledge"
12:108, Pickthall: "with sure knowledge"
12:108, Palmer: "on clear proof"
12:108, Rodwell: "resting on a clear proof"
12:108, Sale: "by an evident demonstration"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 12:108 I call to God with sure knowledge, or clear proof: I and whoever follows me
- 02 17:36 Do not follow, or pursue, what you have no knowledge of
- 03 61:2–3 Why do you say what you do not do? It is most hateful to God
- 04 2:44 Do you enjoin right on others and forget yourselves, though you read the Book?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text joins the call to knowledge, and the renderings split on what kind. At 12:108 Itani has "I invite to God, based on clear knowledge-I and whoever follows me", Pickthall "with sure knowledge", Palmer "on clear proof" and Sale "by an evident demonstration".
At 17:36 Pickthall has "follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge".
The text also weighs speaking against doing: at 61:2 Itani has "Why do you say what you do not do?", and at 2:44 Rodwell has "Will ye enjoin what is right upon others, and forget yourselves?".
No verse sets a degree of learning that must be reached before calling others.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 12:108, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

We sent not before thee (any messengers) save men whom We inspired from among the folk of the townships - Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them?
