Whomever God misguides has no guide. And He leaves them blundering in their transgression.
Who does God guide, and who does He leave astray, in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:186 THOSE WHOM GOD SENDETH ASTRAY, THERE IS NO GUIDE FOR THEM. He leaveth them to wander blindly on in their contumacy. In because it is the flattest statement of the harder half, with no qualification attached.
- 02 14:4 And We never sent a messenger save with the language of his folk, that he might make the message clear for them. THEN GOD SENDETH WHOM HE WILL ASTRAY, AND GUIDETH WHOM HE WILL. In because the second half is stated immediately after an account of God taking trouble to make the message clear, which is the tension in one verse.
- 03 3:86 HOW SHALL GOD GUIDE A PEOPLE WHO DISBELIEVED AFTER THEIR BELIEF and after they bore witness that the messenger is true, and after clear proofs came unto them? In because it gives a REASON, and the reason is something the people did first - which is the strongest evidence that the leaving-astray follows conduct.
- 04 61:5 And when Moses said unto his people: why persecute ye me, when ye well know that I am God's messenger? SO WHEN THEY WENT ASTRAY, GOD SENT THEIR HEARTS ASTRAY. In because the sequence is explicit and in that order: they went astray first, and then were sent astray.
- 05 9:80 Ask forgiveness for them or ask not forgiveness for them; though thou ask forgiveness for them SEVENTY TIMES, God will not forgive them. In because it is the most extreme statement of the closure, and because it is addressed to the Prophet about people he wanted to help.
- 06 2:258 Bethink thee of him who had an argument with Abraham about his Lord ... and GOD GUIDETH NOT WRONGDOING FOLK. In because it names a category rather than individuals - the wrongdoers - which is how most of these verses actually qualify the claim.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The formula is one of the commonest in the Qur'an - sixteen near-identical verses are recorded as drops - and stated bare it is very hard: HE GUIDETH WHOM HE WILL AND SENDETH ASTRAY WHOM HE WILL.
But the verses that add anything all add the same thing, and it changes the picture.
3:86 asks HOW shall God guide a people who disbelieved AFTER their belief, after bearing witness, after clear proofs came? The guidance is withheld from people described by what they have already done.
61:5 puts the order beyond doubt: SO WHEN THEY WENT ASTRAY, GOD SENT THEIR HEARTS ASTRAY. They go first. And 2:258, 9:109, 28:50 and 62:5 all say God guides not the WRONGDOING FOLK - a category defined by conduct, not a selection made in advance.
Against that stands 14:4, which is the hardest verse in the set precisely because of its first half. God never sent a messenger except in the language of his own people, SO THAT HE MIGHT MAKE IT CLEAR TO THEM - and then, in the same sentence, He sends astray whom He will and guides whom He will. The trouble taken over clarity and the sovereign choice are in one verse, unreconciled.
7:186 gives the consequence without any qualification at all: those He sends astray have NO GUIDE, and are left to wander blindly. And 9:80 is the sharpest, because it is addressed to the Prophet about people he wanted forgiven: ask seventy times, and it will not be granted.
This study reports the pattern - a sovereign formula, repeatedly qualified by conduct, and at least once stated without qualification - and does not resolve it. It is the same impasse as Does the Qur'an teach predestination or free will?, which carries the other half of the evidence.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:186, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Those who prefer the present life to the Hereafter, and repel from the path of God, and seek to make it crooked-these are far astray.
Those who love the life of the world more than the Hereafter, and debar (men) from the way of Allah and would have it crooked: such are far astray
Who love this world's life better than the next, and turn folks from the path of God, and crave to make it crooked; these are in remote error
Who love the life that now is, above that which is to come, and mislead from the way of God, and seek to make it crooked. These are in a far-gone error

5. Ir (paminėk, Muchammedai ﷺ), kai Mūsa (Mozė) sakė savo žmonėms: „Mano žmonės! Kodėl jūs kenkiate man, kai tikrai žinote, kad esu Allaho Pasiuntinys jums?“ Ir kai jie nuklydo, Allahas privertė jų širdis nuklysti. Ir Allahas neveda teisingai įžūliai nepaklusniųjų.

Hani Mûsâ, kendi kavmine demişti ki: “Ey kavmim! Gerçekten benim sizin için Allah'tan gönderilmiş bir elçi olduğumu bildiğiniz halde, niçin bana eziyet ediyorsunuz?” demişti. Onlar (hak yoldan) sapınca, Allah da onların kalplerini saptırdı. Allah, fasık kavme hidayet etmez.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Ibrahim akasema: Kwa hakika, Mwenyezi Mungu hulileta jua kutokea mashariki, basi wewe lilete kutokea magharibi. Kwa hivyo, akashindwa yule aliyekufuru. Na Mwenyezi Mungu hawaongoi kaumu dhalimu.

There shall be no compulsion in religion; the right way has become distinct from the wrong way. Whoever renounces evil and believes in God has grasped the most trustworthy handle; which does not break. God is Hearing and Knowing.
There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower
There is no compulsion in religion; the right way has been distinguished from the wrong, and whoso disbelieves in Taghut and believes in God, he has got hold of the firm handle in which is no breaking off; but God both hears and knows
Let there be no compulsion in Religion. Now is the right way made distinct from error. Whoever therefore shall deny Thagout and believe in God - he will have taken hold on a strong handle that shall not be broken: and God is He who Heareth, Knoweth
Let there be no violence in religion. Now is right direction manifestly distinguished from deceit: Whoever therefore shall deny Tagut(false gods), and believe in God, he shall surely take hold on a strong handle, which shall not be broken; God is he who heareth and seeth

Or like him who passed by a town collapsed on its foundations. He said, "How can God revive this after its demise?" Thereupon God caused him to die for a hundred years, and then resurrected him. He said, "For how long have you tarried?" He said, "I have tarried for a day, or part of a day." He said, "No. You have tarried for a hundred years. Now look at your food and your drink-it has not spoiled-and look at your donkey. We will make you a wonder for mankind. And look at the bones, how We arrange them, and then clothe them with flesh." So when it became clear to him, he said, "I know that God has power over all things."
Or (bethink thee of) the like of him who, passing by a township which had fallen into utter ruin, exclaimed: How shall Allah give this township life after its death? And Allah made him die a hundred years, then brought him back to life. He said: How long hast thou tarried? (The man) said: I have tarried a day or part of a day. (He) said: Nay, but thou hast tarried for a hundred years. Just look at thy food and drink which have not rotted! Look at thine ass! And, that We may make thee a token unto mankind, look at the bones, how We adjust them and then cover them with flesh! He said, 'Nay, thou hast tarried a hundred years; look at thy food and drink, they are not spoiled, and look at thine ass; for we will make thee a sign to men. God said, nay, thou hast tarried here an hundred years. The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:186, 14:4, 3:86, 61:5, 9:80, 2:258, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - guideth + whom + he + will + sendeth + astray + whom; whom + god + sendeth + astray + no + guide; whom + god + guideth + none + lead + astray; god + guideth + not + folk + wrongdoing. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 16 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:88 - near-identical in force to 61:5, though 'because of what they earned' is the clearest causal clause in the whole set; 5:51 - the awliya verse - it belongs to the study Does the Qur'an forbid befriending non-Muslims?; 6:144 - a specific dispute about cattle; 9:19 - a comparison of merits; 9:24 - a warning about attachments; 9:109 - near-identical to 2:258; 13:33 - near-identical to 7:186; 17:97 - near-identical; 18:17 - near-identical; 28:50 - near-identical to 2:258; 39:23 - near-identical; carried by What does the Qur'an say about the heart finding rest in remembrance? for a different clause; 39:36 - near-identical; 39:37 - near-identical; 40:33 - near-identical; 62:5 - near-identical; 74:31 - near-identical to 14:4, which is kept.
