And give the relative his rights, and the poor, and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully.
What does the Qur'an say about extravagance and squandering?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 17:26–27 Give the kinsman his due, and the needy, and the wayfarer, AND SQUANDER NOT (THY WEALTH) IN WANTONNESS. LO, THE SQUANDERERS WERE EVER BROTHERS OF THE DEVILS, and the devil was ever an ingrate to his Lord. In as ONE PASSAGE because the prohibition and its extraordinary characterisation are consecutive, and because the instruction to GIVE comes first in the same breath as the instruction not to waste.
- 02 7:31 O Children of Adam, look to your adornment at every place of worship, AND EAT AND DRINK, BUT BE NOT PRODIGAL. Lo, He loveth not the prodigals. In because it permits and limits in one sentence, and because the permission is stated first. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about water and not wasting it?, with a different reason there.
- 03 6:141 Eat ye of the fruit thereof when it fruiteth, and pay the due thereof upon the harvest day, AND BE NOT PRODIGAL. Lo, God loveth not the prodigals. In because it attaches the same prohibition to agriculture and to the harvest due, so waste and withholding are addressed together.
- 04 25:67 And those who, when they spend, are NEITHER PRODIGAL NOR GRUDGING; and there is ever a firm station between the two. In because it names both errors and asserts a middle. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from the study What does the Qur'an say about moderation in spending?
- 05 28:76 Now Korah was of Moses' folk, but he oppressed them; and We gave him so much treasure that the keys thereof would verily have been a burden for a troop of mighty men. When his own folk said unto him: EXULT NOT; lo, God loveth not the exultant. In because it is the worked example. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about pride in wealth?, with a different reason there.
- 06 3:188 Think not that those who EXULT IN WHAT THEY HAVE GIVEN AND LOVE TO BE PRAISED FOR WHAT THEY HAVE NOT DONE - think not they are in safety from the doom. In because it names a form of extravagance that costs nothing: display of generosity not actually performed.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and 17:27 contains the most severe characterisation of a financial fault anywhere in the Qur'an.
THE SQUANDERERS WERE EVER BROTHERS OF THE DEVILS. All four translators keep the kinship. Nothing else in the text's treatment of money reaches for that comparison - not theft, not usury, not hoarding.
What makes it sharper is 17:26, the verse immediately before, which is an instruction to GIVE: to the kinsman, the needy, the wayfarer. The prohibition on squandering is not an argument for keeping. It arrives attached to a command to distribute, which locates the fault precisely: waste is what happens to wealth that is neither given nor used.
7:31 gives the general rule and gives it generously: EAT AND DRINK - and only then - BUT BE NOT PRODIGAL. The permission comes first, and the limit is at excess rather than at enjoyment.
6:141 pairs the same prohibition with the harvest due, so that waste and withholding are addressed in one verse.
25:67 supplies the standard: NEITHER PRODIGAL NOR GRUDGING, with a firm station between.
3:188 names a form of extravagance that spends nothing at all - people who EXULT IN WHAT THEY HAVE GIVEN and LOVE TO BE PRAISED FOR WHAT THEY HAVE NOT DONE. And 28:76 is the worked example, in which Korah's own people warn him and the warning is about exulting rather than about owning.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 17:26–27, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Some He has guided, and some have deserved misguidance. They have adopted the devils for patrons rather than God, and they assume that they are guided.
A party hath He led aright, while error hath just hold over (another) party, for lo! they choose the devils for protecting supporters instead of Allah and deem that they are rightly guided
A sect He guides, and for a sect of them was error due; verily, they did take the devils for their patrons instead of God, and they did count that they were guided
some hath he guided, and some hath he justly left in error, because they have taken the Satans as their tutelars beside God, and have deemed that they were guided aright

He said, "I was given all this on account of knowledge I possess." Did he not know that God destroyed many generations before him, who were stronger than he, and possessed greater riches? But the guilty will not be asked about their sins.
He said: I have been given it only on account of knowledge I possess. Knew he not that Allah had destroyed already of the generations before him men who were mightier than him in strength and greater in respect of following? The guilty are not questioned of their sins
Said he, 'I have only been given it for knowledge which I have!' did he not know that God had destroyed before him many generations of those who were stronger than he, and had amassed more? But the sinners need not to be asked concerning their crimes
He said, "It hath been given me only on account of the knowledge that is in me." Did he not know that God had destroyed before him generations that were mightier than he in strength and had amassed more abundant wealth? But the wicked shall not be asked of their crimes
He answered, I have received these riches, only because of the knowledge which is with me. Did he not know that God had already destroyed, before him, several generations, who were mightier than he in strength, and had amassed more abundance of riches? And the wicked shall not be asked to discover their crimes

Assuredly ye will be tried in your property and in your persons, and ye will hear much wrong from those who were given the Scripture before you, and from the idolaters. But if ye persevere and ward off (evil), then that is of the steadfast heart of things
Ye shall surely be tried in your wealth, and in your persons, and ye shall surely hear from those who have had the Book brought them before you, and from those who associate others with God, much harm. But if ye be patient and fear,- verily, that is one of the determined affairs
Ye shall assuredly be tried in your possessions and in yourselves. And many hurtful things shall ye assuredly hear from those to whom the Scriptures were given before you, and from those who join other gods with God. But if ye be steadfast, and fear God this verily is needed in the affairs of life
Ye shall surely be proved in your possessions, and in your persons; and ye shall hear from those unto whom the scripture was delivered before you, and from the idolaters, much hurt: But if ye be patient, and fear God, this is a matter that is absolutely determined

The translators word this verse differently
God received a pledge from those who were given the Scripture: "You shall proclaim it to the people, and not conceal it." But they disregarded it behind their backs, and exchanged it for a small price. What a miserable exchange they made.
And (remember) when Allah laid a charge on those who had received the Scripture (He said): Ye are to expound it to mankind and not to hide it. But they flung it behind their backs and bought thereby a little gain. Verily evil is that which they have gained thereby
When God took the compact from those who have had the Book brought them that 'Ye shall of a surety manifest it unto men, and not hide it,' they cast it behind their backs, and bought therewith a little price,- but evil is what they buy
Moreover, when God entered into a convenant with those to whom the Scriptures had been given, and said, "Ye shall surely make it known to mankind and not hide it," they cast it behind their backs, and sold it for a sorry price! But vile is that for which they have sold it
And when God accepted the covenant of those to whom the book of the law was given, saying, ye shall surely publish it unto mankind, ye shall not hide it: Yet they threw it behind their backs, and sold it for a small price; but woful is the price for which they have sold it

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 17:26-27, 7:31, 6:141, 25:67, 28:76, 3:188, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - squander + not; squanderers + brothers + devils; loveth + not + prodigals; waste + not + by + excess; exult + not. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:29 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about consuming others' wealth unjustly?, where taking rather than wasting is the subject; 7:170 - the verb in a different sense - God not wasting a reward; 57:23 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about humility versus arrogance?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
