It is He who sends the wind ahead of His mercy. Then, when they have gathered up heavy clouds, We drive them to a dead land, where We make water come down, and with it We bring out all kinds of fruits. Thus We bring out the dead-perhaps you will reflect.
What does the Qur'an say about winds and rain as signs?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:57 He it is Who sendeth the winds as tidings heralding His mercy, till, when they bear a cloud heavy (with rain), We lead it to a dead land and cause water to descend, and bring forth all manner of fruit. THUS BRING WE FORTH THE DEAD - haply ye may remember. In because it is the fullest form of the whole image, and because it states outright what the sequence is an argument for.
- 02 25:48 He it is Who sendeth the winds, GLAD TIDINGS heralding His mercy, and We send down purifying water from the sky. In because it is the tightest form of the same statement, and because the water is called purifying.
- 03 30:46 And of His signs is this: He sendeth herald winds to make you taste His mercy, and that the ships may sail at His command, and that ye may seek His favour, and that haply ye may be thankful. In because it is the only one that names the winds as SIGNS in so many words, and it lists four purposes rather than one.
- 04 27:63 Is not He (best) Who guideth you in the darkness of the land and the sea, He Who sendeth the winds as heralds of His mercy? In because it puts the winds inside a series of rhetorical questions about who else could do it.
- 05 15:22 And We send the winds FERTILISING, and cause water to descend from the sky, and give it you to drink. In because the adjective is unique in the set - the winds are described as impregnating or fertilising, not merely as announcing. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about water and not wasting it?, with a different reason there.
- 06 2:164 In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships, and the water God sendeth down whereby He revives the earth, and the ordering of the winds and the clouds obedient between heaven and earth - are signs for people who have sense. This verse lists the ordering of the winds and the clouds among the signs in the creation of the heavens and the earth, beside night and day, the ships and the rain that revives the earth.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and this is the complete set - no drops, which is rare in these studies.
The pattern is remarkably fixed. God sends the winds; the winds are HERALDS or GLAD TIDINGS of mercy; they carry cloud; water comes down; a dead land lives. Four of the six run that sequence, and 7:57 runs it to the end and then says what it is for: THUS BRING WE FORTH THE DEAD - haply ye may remember.
That is the finding. Rain in this text is almost never simply weather. It is an argument about resurrection, made from something the audience watched happen every year.
Two verses add a word the others do not. 15:22 calls the winds FERTILISING - impregnating, in some renderings - which makes the wind an agent in the process rather than an announcement of it. And 25:48 calls the water PURIFYING, which is the term the ablution rules later rest on.
30:46 is the only verse that uses the word signs directly of the winds, and it is the least tidy: the winds are sent so that you may taste His mercy, and that ships may sail, and that you may seek His favour, and that you may be thankful. Four purposes, running from the theological to the commercial and back.
2:164 puts the whole thing in proportion. There the winds and the clouds are one item in a catalogue that also holds the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, the ships at sea, and the water that revives the ground - all of it addressed to PEOPLE WHO HAVE SENSE. The winds are not a special case; they are one of the ordinary things the text expects a thinking person to notice.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:57, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

They will remain under it forever, and the torment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be reprieved.
They ever dwell therein. The doom will not be lightened for them, neither will they be reprieved
to dwell therein for aye; the torment shall not be lightened for them, nor shall they be looked upon
Under it shall they remain for ever: their torment shall not be lightened, and God will not even look upon them
they shall remain under it for ever, their punishment shall not be alleviated, neither shall they be regarded

Yet among the people are those who take other than God as equals to Him. They love them as the love of God. But those who believe have greater love for God. If only the wrongdoers would realize, when they see the torment; that all power is God's, and that God is severe in punishment.
Yet of mankind are some who take unto themselves (objects of worship which they set as) rivals to Allah, loving them with a love like (that which is the due) of Allah (only) - those who believe are stauncher in their love for Allah - Oh, that those who do evil had but known, (on the day) when they behold the doom, that power belongeth wholly to Allah, and that Allah is severe in punishment
Yet are there some amongst mankind who take to themselves peers other than God; they love them as they should love God while those who believe love God more. O that those who are unjust could only see, when they see the torment, that power is altogether God's! Verily, God is keen to torment
Yet there are men who take to them idols along with God, and love them with the love of God: But stronger in the faithful is the love of God. Oh! the impious will see, when they see their chastisement, that all power is God's, and that God is severe in chastising
Yet some men take idols beside God, and love them as with the love due to God; but the true believers are more fervent in love towards God. Oh that they who act unjustly did perceive, when they behold their punishment, that all power belongeth unto God, and that he is severe in punishing

Those who were followed will then disown those who followed them, and they will see the retribution, and ties between them will be severed.
(On the day) when those who were followed disown those who followed (them), and they behold the doom, and all their aims collapse with them
When those who are followed clear themselves of those who followed them, and see the torment, and the cords are cut asunder
When those who have had followers shall declare themselves clear from their followers after that they have seen the chastisement, and when the ties between them shall be cut asunder
When those who have been followed, shall separate themselves from their followers, and shall see the punishment, and the cords of relation between them shall be cut in sunder

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:57, 25:48, 30:46, 27:63, 15:22, 2:164, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - winds + glad + tidings; winds + good + tidings; winds + heralds; winds + messengers; send + winds + clouds; winds + fecundating; winds + quickening; winds + bearing. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 2:164, the reason said another study carries this verse in spirit, which it does not; the cross-reference was removed, and so was a claim about how the text ranks the winds. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
