If God touches you with adversity, none can remove it except He. And if He touches you with good-He is Capable of everything.
Does the Qur'an support amulets and talismans?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 6:17 IF GOD TOUCH THEE WITH AFFLICTION, THERE IS NONE THAT CAN RELIEVE THEREFROM SAVE HIM, and if He touch thee with good fortune, He is Able to do all things. In because it is the flat exclusion - nothing else relieves - and it covers both directions.
- 02 39:38 And verily, if thou shouldst ask them: who created the heavens and the earth? they will say: God. Say: bethink you then of those ye worship beside God - IF GOD WILLED SOME HURT FOR ME, COULD THEY REMOVE FROM ME HIS HURT; OR IF HE WILLED SOME MERCY FOR ME, COULD THEY RESTRAIN HIS MERCY? Say: God is my all. In because it puts the question as a challenge and names both directions - removing harm and restraining mercy - which is exactly what a talisman is supposed to do.
- 03 17:56–57 Say: cry unto those beside Him whom ye assume. THEY HAVE NO POWER TO REMOVE AFFLICTION FROM YOU, NOR TO CHANGE. Those unto whom they cry seek the way of approach to their Lord, which of them shall be the nearest; they hope for His mercy and they fear His doom. In as ONE PASSAGE because 17:57 says the objects appealed to are themselves petitioners, which is the sharpest argument in the set.
- 04 113:4 And from the evil of MALIGNANT WITCHCRAFT - those who blow upon knots. In because it is the one place the Qur'an mentions the practice of tying and blowing on knots, and it names it as an evil to seek refuge FROM rather than a technique to use. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about seeking refuge from evil (the mu'awwidhat)?, with a different reason there.
- 05 9:129 Now, if they turn away, say: GOD SUFFICETH ME. THERE IS NO GOD SAVE HIM. In Him have I put my trust, and He is Lord of the Tremendous Throne. In because it is the alternative the Qur'an offers in place of any object - a sentence rather than a thing.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
No, and the Qur'an addresses the underlying logic rather than the objects.
6:17 states the exclusion: IF GOD TOUCH THEE WITH AFFLICTION, THERE IS NONE THAT CAN RELIEVE THEREFROM SAVE HIM. Nothing intervenes.
39:38 turns it into a challenge and frames it in exactly the terms a talisman claims. Ask them who made the heavens and the earth and they will say God - then ask about the things they appeal to beside Him: IF GOD WILLED SOME HURT FOR ME, COULD THEY REMOVE IT? OR IF HE WILLED SOME MERCY FOR ME, COULD THEY RESTRAIN IT? Removing harm and securing benefit is precisely the function an amulet is worn for, and the verse asks whether anything can do it.
17:56-57 makes the sharpest argument. The things cried to HAVE NO POWER TO REMOVE AFFLICTION NOR TO CHANGE - and then, remarkably, it says those very objects of appeal are themselves SEEKING THE WAY OF APPROACH TO THEIR LORD, hoping for His mercy and fearing His doom. The intermediaries are petitioners.
113:4 is the one place a practice of this kind is named - THOSE WHO BLOW UPON KNOTS - and it appears in a list of evils to seek refuge FROM.
One drop deserves attention because it shows how easily this could go wrong: 20:27 has Moses praying LOOSE A KNOT FROM MY TONGUE, about a speech impediment. A search on the word alone would have filed it here.
What the Qur'an offers instead of an object is a sentence: 9:129, GOD SUFFICETH ME. The practice of wearing verses is later custom, and no source for it has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 6:17, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Sakyk: „Pasakykit man tada, dalykai kurių jūs šaukiatės šalia Allaho – jei Allahas panorėtų kokios nors žalos man, ar jie galėtų pašalinti Jo žalą? Arba jei Jis (Allahas) norėtų kokio nors gailestingumo man, ar jie galėtų sulaikyti Jo Gailestingumą?“ Sakyk: „Pakankamas man yra Allahas. Juo, kurie pasitiki (t. y. tikintieji), turi pasitikėti.“
Odoo isaan gaafattee “Samiileefi dachii eenyutu uume?” (jettee) “Rabbuma” jedhu. “Mee naaf odeessaa?
Na ukiwauliza: Ni nani aliyeziumba mbingu na ardhi. Bila ya shaka watasema: Mwenyezi Mungu. Sema: Mwenyezi Mungu ananitosheleza.

And thy Lord best knows who is in the heavens and the earth; we did prefer some of the prophets over the others, and to David did we give the Psalms
Thy Lord hath full knowledge of all in the heavens and the earth. Higher gifts have we given to some of the prophets than to others, and the Psalter we gave to David
Thy Lord well knoweth all persons in heaven and on earth. We have bestowed peculiar favours on some of the prophets, preferably to others; and We gave unto David the psalms

Nothing prevents Us from sending miraculous signs, except that the ancients called them lies. We gave Thamood the she-camel, a visible sign, but they mistreated her. We do not send the signs except to instill reverence.
Naught hindereth Us from sending portents save that the folk of old denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel - a clear portent save to warn
Naught hindered us from sending thee with signs, save that those of yore said they were lies; so we gave Thamud the visible she-camel, but they treated her unjustly! for we do not send (any one) with signs save to make men fear
Nothing hindered us from sending thee with the power of working miracles, except that the peoples of old treated them as lies. We gave to Themoud the she-camel before their very eyes, yet they maltreated her! We send not a prophet with miracles but to strike terror
Nothing hindered us from sending thee with miracles, except that the former nations have charged them with imposture. We gave unto the tribe of Thamud, at their demand, the she-camel visible to their sight; yet they dealt unjustly with her: And We send not a prophet with miracles, but to strike terror

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 6:17, 39:38, 17:56-57, 113:4, 9:129, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - if + god + touch + thee + with + affliction + there + is + none + that + can + relieve; say + god + sufficeth + me; they + cannot + remove + it + nor + can + they + transfer + it; knot; blow + upon + knots. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 17:96 - about testimony; 20:27 - Moses' prayer about his speech - the same word for knot, an entirely different sense. A single-word search would have made this a verse about talismans; 29:52 - near-identical to 17:96; 46:8 - about the accusation of invention.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
