It is You we worship, and upon You we call for help.
Does the Qur'an allow asking saints for help?
In short
- The verses usually cited are: it is You we worship, and upon You we call for help (1:5); those called on besides Him have no power to relieve adversity nor to change it (17:56); those who take guardians besides Him say they worship them only that they may bring them nearer to God (39:3); those who worship what neither harms nor benefits them call these their intercessors with God (10:18); seek the means of approach to Him, where Rodwell has union with Him and Sale a near conjunction (5:35); and had those who wronged themselves come to the Messenger and prayed for God's forgiveness, and the Messenger prayed for their forgiveness, they would have found God relenting, where Pickthall has them ask forgiveness of the messenger (4:64).
- The text does not say: that a saint is one to call on for help; Pickthall alone uses the word, and at 17:56 it is his own bracket; nor whether coming to the Messenger, at 4:64, holds after his death.
- The rest comes from: outside the Qur'an; no source for it is named here.
Where the renderings split
1:5, Itani: "upon You we call for help"
1:5, Pickthall: "Thee (alone) we ask for help"
1:5, Palmer: "Thee we ask for aid"
1:5, Rodwell: "to Thee do we cry for help"
1:5, Sale: "of Thee do we beg assistance"
5:35, Itani: "seek the means of approach to Him"
5:35, Pickthall: "seek the way of approach unto Him"
5:35, Palmer: "crave the means to approach Him"
5:35, Rodwell: "Desire union with Him"
5:35, Sale: "earnestly desire a near conjunction with Him"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 1:5 It is You we worship, and upon You we call for help
- 02 17:56 Those called on besides God have no power to remove harm or change it; Pickthall's own bracket names them saints and angels
- 03 39:3 Those who take protectors besides God say: we worship them only that they bring us near to God
- 04 10:18 They say: these are our intercessors with God
- 05 5:35 Those who believe are told to seek the means of approach to God; Rodwell has union with Him and Sale a near conjunction with Him
- 06 4:64 Had those who wronged themselves come to the Messenger and asked God's forgiveness, and the Messenger asked forgiveness for them, they would have found God relenting; Pickthall has them ask forgiveness of the messenger
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
In the opening surah the help is asked of God: at 1:5 Itani has "It is You we worship, and upon You we call for help", and Pickthall's "(alone)" is his own bracket.
At 17:56 those called on besides God are said to have no power: Pickthall has "Cry unto those (saints and angels) whom ye assume (to be gods) beside Him, yet they have no power to rid you of misfortune nor to change". The words in his brackets are his own; the other four do not name saints.
At 39:3 and 10:18 the text gives the words of those who call on others: Pickthall has "We worship them only that they may bring us near unto Allah" at 39:3, and at 10:18 Itani has "These are our intercessors with God."
At 5:35 those who believe are told to seek a way to God, and the renderings differ on what is sought: Itani has "seek the means of approach to Him" and Pickthall "seek the way of approach unto Him", where Rodwell has "Desire union with Him" and Sale "earnestly desire a near conjunction with Him". The verse does not say what the means is.
At 4:64 the text speaks of coming to the Messenger: Itani has "Had they, when they wronged themselves, come to you, and prayed for God's forgiveness, and the Messenger had prayed for their forgiveness, they would have found God Relenting and Merciful". Pickthall has "asked forgiveness of the messenger", where the other four have the Messenger ask pardon for them. The verse does not say whether it holds after the Prophet's death.
Only Pickthall uses the word saint, and at the verse carried here, 17:56, it is his own bracket. What it says of help and of those called on besides God is in the verses above.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 1:5, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Ja, all dyrkan tillkommer enbart Gud.

Mankind was a single community; then they differed. Were it not for a prior decree from your Lord, the matters over which they had disputed would have been settled.
Mankind were but one community; then they differed; and had it not been for a word that had already gone forth from thy Lord it had been judged between them in respect of that wherein they differ
People were but one nation once, then they disagreed; and had it not been for thy Lord's word already passed, there would have been decided between them that concerning which they disagreed
Men were of one religion only: then they fell to variance: and had not a decree (of respite) previously gone forth from thy Lord, their differences had surely been decided between them
Men were professors of one religion only, but they dissented therefrom; and if a decree had not previously issued from thy Lord, deferring their punishment, verily the matter had been decided between them, concerning which they disagreed

And they will say: If only a portent were sent down upon him from his Lord! Then say, (O Muhammad): The Unseen belongeth to Allah. So wait! Lo! I am waiting with you
They say, 'Why is not a sign sent down upon him from his Lord?' Say, 'The unseen is only God's; but wait ye for a while, verily, I with you am one of those who wait
They say: "Unless a sign be sent down to him from his Lord. . . ." But SAY: The hidden is only with God: wait therefore: I truly will be with you among those who wait
They say, unless a sign be sent down unto him from his Lord, we will not believe. Answer, verily that which is hidden is known only unto God: Wait therefore the pleasure of God; and I also will wait with you

How about when a disaster strikes them because what their hands have put forward, and then they come to you swearing by God: "We only intended goodwill and reconciliation"?
How would it be if a misfortune smote them because of that which their own hands have sent before (them)? Then would they come unto thee, swearing by Allah that they were seeking naught but harmony and kindness
How then when there befalls them a mischance through what their hands have sent on before? then will they come to you, and swear by God, 'We meant naught but good and concord
But how, when some misfortune shall fortune them, for their previous handywork? Then will they come to thee, swearing by God, "We desire nothing but to promote good and concord
But how will they behave when a misfortune shall befall them, for that which their hands have sent before them? Then will they come unto thee, and swear by God, saying, if we intended any other, than to do good, and to reconcile the parties

They are those whom God knows what is in their hearts. So ignore them, and admonish them, and say to them concerning themselves penetrating words.
Those are they, the secrets of whose hearts Allah knoweth. So oppose them and admonish them, and address them in plain terms about their souls
These, God knows what is in their hearts. Turn thou away from them and admonish them, and speak to them into their souls with a searching word
These are they whose hearts God knoweth. Therefore break off from them, and warn them, speak words that may penetrate their souls
God knoweth what is in the hearts of these men; therefore let them alone, and admonish them, and speak unto them a word which may affect their souls
4:64 — the verse above

But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they call you to arbitrate in their disputes, and then find within themselves no resentment regarding your decisions, and submit themselves completely.
But nay, by thy Lord, they will not believe (in truth) until they make thee judge of what is in dispute between them and find within themselves no dislike of that which thou decidest, and submit with full submission
But no! by thy Lord! they will not believe, until they have made thee judge of what they differ on; then they will not find in themselves aught to hinder what thou hast decreed, and they will submit with submission
And they will not - I swear by thy Lord - they will not believe, until they have set thee up as judge between them on points where they differ. Then shall they not find in their own minds any difficulty in thy decisions, and shall submit with entire submission
And by thy Lord they will not perfectly believe, until they make thee judge of their controversies; and shall not afterwards find in their own minds any hardship in what thou shalt determine, but shall acquiesce therein with entire submission

Had We decreed for them: "Kill yourselves," or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But had they done what they were instructed to do, it would have been better for them, and a firmer confirmation.
And if We had decreed for them: Lay down your lives or go forth from your dwellings, but few of them would have done it; though if they did what they are exhorted to do it would be better for them, and more strengthening
But had we prescribed for them, 'Kill yourselves, or go ye forth out of your houses,' they would not have done it, save only a few of them; but had they done what they are admonished, then it would have been better for them, and a more firm assurance
Had we laid down such a law for them as "Kill yourselves, or abandon your dwellings," but few of them would have done it. But had they done that to which they were exhorted, better and it been for them, and stronger for the confirmation of their faith
And if we had commanded them, saying, slay your selves, or depart from your houses; they would not have done it, except a few of them. And if they had done what they were admonished, it would certainly have been better for them, and more efficacious for confirming their faith
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 3 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an allows asking saints for help. The probe 'saint' and 'saints' returns four rows at four verses, all Pickthall's (4:69, 17:56, 19:41, 19:56); 17:56 is carried, and the others name a prophet or the company of the righteous and are recorded as not carried.
5:35 and 4:64 are carried because readers also bring them to the question, on the means of approach to God and on coming to the Messenger; the study draws no conclusion from them, or from the other verses carried.
Protectors besides God are read in the study Is there any protector besides God (angels as protectors)?, and intercession in What does the Qur'an say about intercession on the Day of Judgment?
