Whom did Abraham nearly sacrifice in the Qur'an - and is the son named?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 37:99–111 And he said: lo, I am going unto my Lord... My Lord, vouchsafe me of the righteous. So We gave him tidings of A GENTLE SON. And when he was old enough to walk with him, Abraham said: O MY DEAR SON, I HAVE SEEN IN A DREAM THAT I MUST SACRIFICE THEE. So look, what thinkest thou? HE SAID: O MY FATHER, DO THAT WHICH THOU ART COMMANDED. God willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast. Then, when they had both surrendered and he had flung him down upon his face, We called unto him: O Abraham, THOU HAST ALREADY FULFILLED THE VISION. Lo, thus do We reward the good. Lo, that verily was a clear test. THEN WE RANSOMED HIM WITH A TREMENDOUS VICTIM. In as ONE PASSAGE because the whole episode is one continuous passage and the son is never named within it - splitting it would conceal that.
  2. 02 37:112–113 AND WE GAVE HIM TIDINGS OF THE BIRTH OF ISAAC, a prophet of the righteous. And We blessed him and Isaac. In as ONE PASSAGE because it comes immediately AFTER the sacrifice narrative, and that placement is the whole of the argument about which son it was.
  3. 03 11:71–73 And his wife, standing by, laughed when WE GAVE HER GLAD TIDINGS OF ISAAC, AND, AFTER ISAAC, OF JACOB. She said: oh woe is me! Shall I bear a child when I am an old woman? In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the other annunciation and it names Isaac explicitly, which the sacrifice passage does not.
  4. 04 2:124 And when his Lord tried Abraham with His commands, AND HE FULFILLED THEM, He said: lo, I have appointed thee a leader for mankind. In because it states that Abraham was tried and passed, without specifying the trial.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The son is NOT NAMED. That is the answer to the second half of the question, and everything else follows from it.

37:99-111 tells the whole episode and never uses a name. He is A GENTLE SON, then MY DEAR SON, then he. The dream, the consultation - SO LOOK, WHAT THINKEST THOU? - the son's answer, the submission, the call, and the ransom all happen without an identification.

Two features of the telling are worth noting on their own.

Abraham ASKS HIM. He describes the dream and then asks what his son thinks. And the son's reply is not merely acceptance: O MY FATHER, DO THAT WHICH THOU ART COMMANDED - GOD WILLING, THOU SHALT FIND ME OF THE STEADFAST. He qualifies his own steadfastness.

And 37:105 says the thing was already done: THOU HAST ALREADY FULFILLED THE VISION. The test was completed at the point of willingness.

Now the naming question. 37:112, the verse immediately after the ransom, says: AND WE GAVE HIM TIDINGS OF THE BIRTH OF ISAAC. That placement is the entire textual basis of the argument. If the annunciation of Isaac comes after the sacrifice, the son in the story was someone else - which points to Ishmael, who is named elsewhere in the Qur'an as Abraham's son and as co-builder of the House. Others read 37:112 as resuming rather than sequencing.

11:71 is the other annunciation of Isaac, and it names him plainly.

The Qur'an does not settle it. The commentators divided, and early ones divided both ways; none has cleared the rights audit. What can be shown is the text: an unnamed son, a consultation, and Isaac named in the next breath.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 37:99–111, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And fear the day when no soul shall pay a recompense for a soul, nor shall an equivalent be received therefrom, nor any intercession avail; and they shall not be helped

John Medows Rodwell1861 And dread the day when not in aught shall soul satisfy for soul, nor shall any ransom be taken from it, nor shall any intercession avail, and they shall not be helped

Talal Itani2012 And We made the House a focal point for the people, and a sanctuary. Use the shrine of Abraham as a place of prayer. And We commissioned Abraham and Ishmael, "Sanctify My House for those who circle around it, and those who seclude themselves in it, and those who kneel and prostrate."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And when We made the House (at Makka) a resort for mankind and sanctuary, (saying): Take as your place of worship the place where Abraham stood (to pray). And We imposed a duty upon Abraham and Ishmael, (saying): Purify My house for those who go around and those who meditate therein and those who bow down and prostrate themselves (in worship)

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And when we made the House a place of resort unto men, and a sanctuary, and (said) take the station of Abraham for a place of prayer; and covenanted with Abraham and Ishmael, saying, 'Do ye two cleanse my house for those who make the circuit, for those who pay devotions there, for those who bow down, and for those too who adore

John Medows Rodwell1861 And remember when we appointed the Holy House as man's resort and safe retreat, and said, "Take ye the station of Abraham for a place of prayer:" And we commanded Abraham and Ismael, "Purify my house for those who shall go in procession round it, and those who shall abide there for devotion, and those who shall bow down and prostrate themselves

George Sale1734 And when we appointed the holy house of Mecca to be a place of resort for mankind, and a place of security; and said, take the station of Abraham for a place of prayer; and we covenanted with Abraham and Ismael, that they should cleanse my house for those who should compass it, and those who should be devoutly assiduous there, and those who should bow down and worship

Talal Itani2012 When Abraham said, "O My Lord, make this a peaceful land, and provide its people with fruits-whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day." He said, "And whoever disbelieves, I will give him a little enjoyment, then I will consign him to the punishment of the Fire; how miserable the destiny!"

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And when Abraham prayed: My Lord! Make this a region of security and bestow upon its people fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day, He answered: As for him who disbelieveth, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the doom of Fire - a hapless journey's end

Edward Henry Palmer1880 When Abraham said, 'Lord, make this a town of safety, and provide the dwellers there with fruits, such as believe in God and the last day!' (God) said, ' And he who misbelieves, I will give him but little to enjoy, then will drive him to the torment of the fire, an evil journey will it be

John Medows Rodwell1861 And when Abraham said, "Lord! make this secure land, and supply its people with fruits, such of them as believe in God and in the last day:" He said, "And whoso believeth not, for a little while will I bestow good things on him; then will I drive him to the torment of the Fire!" An ill passage

George Sale1734 And when Abraham said, Lord, make this a territory of security, and bounteously bestow fruits on its inhabitants, such of them as believe in God and the last day; God answered, and whoever believeth not, I will bestow on him little, afterwards I will drive him to the punishment of hellfire; an ill journey shall it be

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 37:99-111, 37:112-113, 11:71-73, 2:124, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - i + must + sacrifice + thee; do + that + which + thou + art + commanded; thou + hast + already + fulfilled + the + vision; ransomed + him + with + a + tremendous + victim. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 11:112 - matched incidentally on the commanded formula.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

Ibn Kathir
