They ask you about the Hour, "When will it come?" Say, "Knowledge of it rests with my Lord. None can reveal its coming except He. It weighs heavily on the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except suddenly." They ask you as if you are responsible for it. Say, "Knowledge of it rests with God," but most people do not know.
What does the Qur'an say about the signs of the Last Hour?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:187 They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port? Say: KNOWLEDGE THEREOF IS WITH MY LORD ONLY. He alone will manifest it at its proper time. It is heavy in the heavens and the earth. It cometh not to you save unawares. In because it is the fullest refusal, it records that the question was asked, and it says the Hour arrives WITHOUT WARNING - which is the strongest thing the text says against a list of signs.
- 02 33:63 Men ask thee of the Hour. Say: the knowledge of it is with God only. What can convey (the knowledge) unto thee? It may be that the Hour is NIGH. In because it repeats the refusal and adds nearness without adding content.
- 03 31:34 With Him is knowledge of the Hour. He sendeth down the rain, and knoweth what is in the wombs. No soul knoweth what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knoweth in what land it will die. In because it places the Hour in a short list of things reserved to God, alongside ordinary unknowables.
- 04 54:1 The Hour drew nigh and the MOON WAS RENT IN TWAIN. In because it is the one verse that reports an event alongside the Hour's approach, and because the four translators all keep the splitting.
- 05 27:82 And when the word is fulfilled concerning them, We shall bring forth A BEAST OF THE EARTH to speak unto them, because mankind had not faith in Our revelations. In because it is the only concrete future portent named in these renderings.
- 06 44:10–11 But watch thou for the day when the sky will produce VISIBLE SMOKE that will envelop the people - this is a painful torment. In as ONE PASSAGE because the smoke and what it does are one statement, and because this is the second of only two named portents.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an's answer to this question is mostly a refusal, and the refusal is the finding.
Four separate verses record people ASKING when the Hour will come, and four times the answer is the same: the knowledge is with God alone. 7:187 is the fullest, and it goes further than declining. It says the Hour is HEAVY in the heavens and the earth, and that IT COMETH NOT TO YOU SAVE UNAWARES. A text that says the Hour arrives without warning is not a text setting out a checklist of warnings.
31:34 puts the Hour in company that makes the point plainer still: knowledge of the Hour, of the rain, of what is in the wombs, of what a person will earn tomorrow, of the land in which they will die. It is listed among ordinary things nobody knows.
Two concrete portents ARE named, and both are strange. 27:82 says a BEAST OF THE EARTH will be brought forth to speak to people. 44:10 says the sky will produce a visible smoke that envelops them. Neither is explained, and no third is given.
54:1 is the most argued-over verse here: the Hour drew nigh and THE MOON WAS RENT IN TWAIN. All four translators carry the splitting. Whether it reports a past event, a vision, or a future one is exactly the sort of question that needs commentary, and no has cleared the rights audit.
The long, ordered lists of the signs of the Hour - the descent of Jesus, the Mahdi, the sun rising in the west - are . They are not in the Qur'an. The Dajjal is not in the Qur'an either: a probe on antichrist, dajjal, deceiver, impostor and false messiah across all four renderings returns NOTHING on topic, and that question has been held for the board rather than answered from an empty search.
One drop deserves a reader's attention: 41:11 speaks of the heaven when it WAS smoke - before creation. A looser search would have filed it here as a sign of the end. It is the opposite.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:187, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Men will ask thee of "the Hour." SAY: The knowledge of it is with God alone: and who can tell thee whether haply the Hour be not nigh at hand
Men will ask thee concerning the approach of the last hour: Answer, verily the knowledge thereof is with God alone; and he will not inform thee: Peradventure the hour is nigh at hand

They lied, and followed their opinions, but everything has its time.
They denied (the Truth) and followed their own lusts. Yet everything will come to a decision
And they call it a lie and follow their lusts; but every matter is settled
And they have treated the prophets as impostors, and follow their own lusts; but everything is unalterably fixed
And they accuse thee, O Mohammed, of imposture, and follow their own lusts: But every thing will be immutably fixed

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:187, 33:63, 31:34, 54:1, 27:82, 44:10-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - hour + nigh; knowledge + hour; beast + earth; moon + split; smoke + heaven; when + sun + folded. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 13 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 6:38 - matched on 'beast of the earth'; carried by the study What does the Qur'an mean that animals are 'communities like you'?; 9:117 - 'hour' in the ordinary sense of a time; 11:6 - matched on 'beast'; the subject is provision; 16:49 - matched on 'creature'; 16:61 - the same; 31:10 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the mountains as 'pegs'?; 35:45 - near-identical to 16:61; 41:11 - matched on 'smoke', but this is the smoke BEFORE creation - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the heavens and earth being 'joined, then parted'? A single-word search would have made this a sign of the Hour, and it is its opposite; 41:47 - near-identical to 7:187 and 33:63, both kept; 42:17 - near-identical to 33:63; carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about balance in nature (mizan) - and about disturbing it? for its Balance clause; 43:61 - near-identical refusal; 43:85 - the same; 81:1 - an event AT the Hour, not a sign before it - the surah describes the day itself.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
