O you who believe! Obey God and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you dispute over anything, refer it to God and the Messenger, if you believe in God and the Last Day. That is best, and a most excellent determination.
What does the Qur'an say about obeying those in authority?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:59 O ye who believe, OBEY GOD, AND OBEY THE MESSENGER AND THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE IN AUTHORITY; AND IF YE HAVE A DISPUTE CONCERNING ANY MATTER, REFER IT TO GOD AND THE MESSENGER. In because it is the only verse commanding obedience to human authority, and because its second half supplies a referral that the first half does not close over.
- 02 4:83 And if any tidings, whether of safety or fear, come unto them, they noise it abroad; whereas IF THEY HAD REFERRED IT TO THE MESSENGER AND SUCH OF THEM AS ARE IN AUTHORITY, THOSE OF THEM WHO ARE ABLE TO THINK OUT THE MATTER WOULD HAVE KNOWN IT. In because it is the only other verse using the phrase, and it describes the function of those in authority as working something out rather than commanding.
- 03 31:15 But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, THEN OBEY THEM NOT - yet consort with them in the world kindly. This verse limits obedience to parents: if they strive to make one ascribe partners to God, obey them not, yet consort with them kindly. It also appears in What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an?; the verse before it, 31:14, is in What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse commands it, and the same verse limits it.
4:59: obey God, and obey the messenger, AND THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE IN AUTHORITY. That is the whole textual basis for obedience to human rulers in the Qur'an - one clause.
Three things about it deserve a reader's attention.
First, the grammar. The four translators handle it alike: the verb OBEY is repeated for God and for the messenger, and is NOT repeated before those in authority. They are attached to the messenger's clause rather than given a command of their own. Whether that is significant is an interpretive question, but the reader should be able to see it.
Second, the second half. AND IF YE HAVE A DISPUTE CONCERNING ANY MATTER, REFER IT TO GOD AND THE MESSENGER, if ye are believers in God and the Last Day. The verse that commands obedience provides, in the same breath, a route past the person being obeyed.
Third, 4:83 - the only other verse using the phrase - does not describe those in authority as issuing orders at all. It describes referring a report to them because THOSE WHO ARE ABLE TO THINK OUT THE MATTER would know what to make of it. The role is analytic.
31:15 supplies the one stated limit on obedience to any human being, and it is given about the strongest natural claim - a parent's. If they press you toward ascribing partners to God, DO NOT OBEY THEM; and be kind to them anyway.
What is not here: any account of how authority is acquired, what forfeits it, or what a subject may do about an unjust ruler. Speaking to one is carried by What does the Qur'an say about speaking truth to an unjust ruler?, and the text there is more forthcoming than it is here.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:59, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the messenger and those of you who are in authority; and if ye have a dispute concerning any matter, refer it to Allah and the messenger if ye are (in truth) believers in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more seemly in the end

So fight in the cause of God; you are responsible only for yourself. And rouse the believers. Perhaps God will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. God is Stronger in Might, and More Punishing.
So fight (O Muhammad) in the way of Allah Thou art not taxed (with the responsibility for anyone) except thyself - and urge on the believers. Peradventure Allah will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. Allah is stronger in might and stronger in inflicting punishment
Fight, then, in the way of God; impose not aught on any but thyself, and urge on the believers; it may be that God will restrain the violence of those who misbelieve, for God is more violent and more severe to punish
Fight, therefore, on God's path: lay not burdens on any but thyself; and stir up the faithful. The might of the infidels haply will god restrain, for God is the stronger in prowess, and the stronger to punish
Fight therefore for the religion of God, and oblige not any to what is difficult, except thy self; however excite the faithful to war, perhaps God will restrain the courage of the unbelievers; for God is stronger than they, and more able to punish

Whoever intercedes for a good cause has a share in it, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause shares in its burdens. God keeps watch over everything.
Whoso interveneth in a good cause will have the reward thereof, and whoso interveneth in an evil cause will bear the consequence thereof. Allah overseeth all things
Whoso intercedes with a good intercession shall have a portion therefrom; but he who intercedes with a bad intercession shall have the like thereof, for God keeps watch over all things
He who shall mediate between men for a good purpose shall be the gainer by it. But he who shall mediate with an evil mediation shall reap the fruit of it. And God keepeth watch over everything

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. We have entrusted the human being with the care of his parents. His mother carried him through hardship upon hardship, weaning him in two years. So give thanks to Me, and to your parents. To Me is the destination.
And We have enjoined upon man concerning his parents - His mother beareth him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years - Give thanks unto Me and unto thy parents. Unto Me is the journeying
For we have commended his parents to man; his mother bore him with weakness upon weakness; and his weaning is in two years; - 'Be thankful to me and to thy parents; for unto me shall your journey be
We have commanded man concerning his parents. His mother carrieth him with weakness upon weakness; nor until after two years is he weaned. Be grateful to me, and to thy parents. Unto me shall all come
We have commanded man concerning his parents, -- his mother carrieth him in her womb with weakness and faintness, and he is weaned in two years, -- saying, be grateful unto Me, and to thy parents. Unto Me shall all come to be judged

"O my son, even if it were the weight of a mustard-seed, in a rock, or in the heavens, or on earth, God will bring it to light. God is Kind and Expert.
O my dear son! Lo! though it be but the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Lo! Allah is Subtile, Aware
O my son! verily, if there were the weight of a grain of mustard seed and it were (hidden) in the rock, or in the heaven, or in the earth, God would bring it (to light). Verily, God is subtle, well aware
O my son! verily God will bring everything to light, though it were but the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and hidden in a rock or in the heavens or in the earth; for, God is subtile, informed of all
O my son, verily every matter, whether good or bad, though it be of the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and be hidden in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, God will bring the same to light; for God is clear-sighted and knowing

O my son, observe the prayer, advocate righteousness, forbid evil, and be patient over what has befallen you. These are of the most honorable traits.
O my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things
O my son! be steadfast in prayer, and bid what is reasonable and forbid what is wrong; be patient of what befalls thee, verily, that is one of the determined affairs
O my son! observe prayer, and enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and be patient under whatever shall betide thee: for this is a bounden duty
O my son, be constant at prayer, and command that which is just, and forbid that which is evil: And be patient under the afflictions which shall befall thee; for this is a duty absolutely incumbent on all men
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:59, 4:83, 31:15, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - obey + god + obey + messenger + those + authority; in + authority + among + you; refer + it + god + messenger. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 31:15, the reason named a study that does not carry the verse; it now names the verse that study carries, and a claim that this is the text's one limit on obedience was removed. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
