What does the Qur'an say about charity multiplied - the grain that grows seven ears of a hundred?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:261 The likeness of those who spend their wealth in God's way is as the likeness of A GRAIN WHICH GROWETH SEVEN EARS, IN EVERY EAR A HUNDRED GRAINS. God giveth increase manifold to whom He will. God is All-Embracing, All-Knowing. In because it is the only occurrence of the image and because the multiplication clause after it declines to fix the figure. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an mean that God multiplies the reward for whom He wills? and Does the Qur'an say a good deed is multiplied ten times over?, with different reasons there.
  2. 02 2:262–264 Those who spend their wealth for the cause of God and afterward MAKE NOT REPROACH AND INJURY TO FOLLOW that which they have spent - their reward is with their Lord... A kind word with forgiveness is better than almsgiving followed by injury... RENDER NOT VAIN YOUR ALMSGIVING BY REPROACH AND INJURY, like him who spendeth his wealth only to be seen of men. In as ONE PASSAGE because the three verses immediately following the seven-hundred image are entirely about how the multiplication is FORFEITED - and quoting 2:261 without them is quoting a promise without its conditions.
  3. 03 2:265 And the likeness of those who spend their wealth in search of God's pleasure, AND FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF THEIR SOULS, is as the likeness of a garden on a height. The rainstorm smiteth it and it bringeth forth its fruit twofold. AND IF THE RAINSTORM SMITE IT NOT, THEN THE SHOWER. In because it is the second agricultural image and its point is different - the garden yields in heavy rain and in light.
  4. 04 2:271 If ye publish your almsgiving, it is well, but if ye hide it and give it to the poor, it will be better for you, AND WILL ATONE FOR SOME OF YOUR ILL-DEEDS. In because it adds a second kind of return - atonement rather than increase. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about giving openly versus in secret?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The image is famous and it is quoted alone far too often. In the Qur'an it does not stand alone; it is the first of five verses, and the four that follow it are about how the promise is LOST.

2:261 gives the picture: spending in God's way is like a grain that grows seven ears with a hundred grains in each. On a natural reading, seven hundred. And then, immediately, GOD GIVETH INCREASE MANIFOLD TO WHOM HE WILL - which declines to fix even that figure.

Then 2:262: the reward belongs to those who spend AND AFTERWARD MAKE NOT REPROACH AND INJURY TO FOLLOW IT. The condition is about what happens after the money changes hands.

2:263 makes the comparison explicit: A KIND WORD WITH FORGIVENESS IS BETTER THAN ALMSGIVING FOLLOWED BY INJURY.

And 2:264: RENDER NOT VAIN YOUR ALMSGIVING BY REPROACH AND INJURY, like the man who spends only TO BE SEEN OF MEN. The word is void, cancelled, rendered fruitless. The seven hundred can go to nothing.

2:265 supplies the counter-image, and it is the more encouraging one. The gift given in search of God's pleasure AND FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF THEIR SOULS is like a garden on high ground: heavy rain doubles its fruit, AND IF THE HEAVY RAIN DOES NOT COME, THE LIGHT SHOWER SUFFICES. It yields either way.

2:271 adds a different kind of return: hidden giving ATONES FOR SOME OF YOUR ILL-DEEDS.

So the passage promises an unfixed multiplication, names two ways to destroy it - reminding the recipient, and giving to be seen - and offers a second image in which the yield does not depend on conditions being favourable.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:261, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

God said, take therefore four birds, and divide them; then lay a part of them on every mountain; then call them, and they shall come swiftly unto thee: And know that God is mighty and wise

Talal Itani published 2012

O you who believe! Do not nullify your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like him who spends his wealth to be seen by the people, and does not believe in God and the Last Day. His likeness is that of a smooth rock covered with soil: a downpour strikes it, and leaves it bare-they gain nothing from their efforts. God does not guide the disbelieving people.

O ye who believe! Render not vain your almsgiving by reproach and injury, like him who spendeth his wealth only to be seen of men and believeth not in Allah and the Last Day. His likeness is as the likeness of a rock whereon is dust of earth; a rainstorm smiteth it, leaving it smooth and bare. They have no control of aught of that which they have gained. Allah guideth not the disbelieving folk

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

O ye who believe! make not your almsgiving vain by taunts and annoyance, like him who expends what he has for the sake of appearances before men, and believes not in God and the last day; for his likeness is as the likeness of a flint with soil upon it, and a heavy shower falls on it and leaves it bare rock; they can do nought with what they earn, for God guides not the misbelieving folk

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

O ye who believe! make not your alms void by reproaches and injury, like him who spendeth his substance to be seen of men, and believeth not in God and in the latter day. The likeness of such an one is that of a rock with a thin soil upon it, on which a heavy rain falleth but leaveth it hard: No profit from their works shall they be able to gain; for God guideth not the unbelieving people

George Sale published 1734

O true believers, make not your alms of none effect by reproaching, or mischief, as he who layeth out what he hath to appear unto men to give alms, and believeth not in God and the last day. The likeness of such a one, is as a flint covered with earth, on which a violent rain falleth, and leaveth it hard. They cannot prosper in any thing which they have gained, for God directeth not the unbelieving people

Talal Itani2012 O you who believe!

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 O ye who believe!

Edward Henry Palmer1880 O ye who believe! make not your almsgiving vain by taunts and annoyance, like him who expends what he has for the sake of appearances before men, and believes not in God and the last day; for his likeness is as the likeness of a flint with soil upon it, and a heavy shower falls on it and leaves it bare rock; they can do nought with what they earn, for God guides not the misbelieving folk

John Medows Rodwell1861 O ye who believe! make not your alms void by reproaches and injury, like him who spendeth his substance to be seen of men, and believeth not in God and in the latter day. The likeness of such an one is that of a rock with a thin soil upon it, on which a heavy rain falleth but leaveth it hard: No profit from their works shall they be able to gain; for God guideth not the unbelieving people

George Sale1734 O true believers, make not your alms of none effect by reproaching, or mischief, as he who layeth out what he hath to appear unto men to give alms, and believeth not in God and the last day. The likeness of such a one, is as a flint covered with earth, on which a violent rain falleth, and leaveth it hard. They cannot prosper in any thing which they have gained, for God directeth not the unbelieving people

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Talal Itani2012 Their guidance is not your responsibility, but God guides whom He wills. Any charity you give is for your own good. Any charity you give shall be for the sake of God. Any charity you give will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 The guiding of them is not thy duty (O Muhammad), but Allah guideth whom He will. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, it is for yourselves, when ye spend not save in search of Allah's Countenance; and whatsoever good thing ye spend, it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged

John Medows Rodwell1861 Their guidance is not thine affair, O Muhammad; but God guideth whom he pleaseth. And the good that ye shall give in alms shall redound unto yourselves; and ye shall not give but as seeking the face of God; and whatever good thing ye shall have given in alms, shall be repaid you, and ye shall not be wronged

George Sale1734 The direction of them belongeth not unto thee; but God directeth whom he pleaseth. The good that ye shall give in alms shall redound unto your selves; and ye shall not give unless out of desire of seeing the face of God. And what good thing ye shall give in alms, it shall be repaid you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly

Talal Itani2012 It is for the poor; those who are restrained in the way of God, and unable to travel in the land. The unaware would think them rich, due to their dignity. You will recognize them by their features. They do not ask from people insistently. Whatever charity you give, God is aware of it.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 (Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shalt know them by their mark: They do not beg of men with importunity. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, lo! Allah knoweth it

Edward Henry Palmer1880 unto the poor who are straitened in God's way, and cannot knock about in the earth. The ignorant think them to be rich because of their modesty; you will know them by their mark, they do not beg from men importunately; but what ye spend of good God knows

John Medows Rodwell1861 There are among you the poor, who being shut up to fighting for the cause of God, have it not in their power to strike out into the earth for riches. Those who know them not, think them rich because of their modesty. By this their token thou shalt know them - they ask not of men with importunity: and of whatever good thing ye shall give them in alms, of a truth God will take knowledge

George Sale1734 unto the poor who are wholly employed in fighting for the religion of God, and cannot go to and fro in the earth; whom the ignorant man thinketh rich, because of their modesty: Thou shalt know them by this mark, they ask not men with importunity; and what good ye shall give in alms, verily God knoweth it

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:261, 2:262-264, 2:265, 2:271, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - a + grain + which + groweth + seven + ears; hundred + grains; seven + ears + in + every + ear; god + giveth + increase + manifold. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
